Wow, just started playing TR1 for the first time, and the dead bodies don't dissapear after a few seconds, much more realistic!
Was watched my first kill of a bat in the caves waiting for it to disappear but he (or she) didn't!
Why did they change this detail on subsequent TR's? and what about TR2 & 3 do thier bodies stay put too? cos I haven't played them yet.
Tomb Raider 2 and 3 do not have disappearing corpses. :)
I always wondered about that from Last Revelation onwards. It may be tidy, but it's not very satisfying. I like seeing my adversaries bodies lying around.
Bodies start dissapearing from TR4 because that was a poor technology and bodies looked strange while lying half on the rock, half on the ground :D

Maybe the next step then is realistic corpses lying around the place!
Yeah might come as a bit of a shock if you haven't played TR1 before.
From what we know of TR Underworld, dead bodies will be lying around here and there ;)

Hurrah! Lovely cadavers everywhere!
I see them as a testament to Lara's abilities. :D
I was a bit surprised the first time I played TR2 and the tiger I killed at the beginning didn't disappear. I think that when they made TLR, graphics had improved and the enemies were such complex objects that they would have made the game run slowly if too many of them had stayed put.
The reasons for disappearing corpses are probably:
1. To save memory
2. To make it less obvious when baddies die half imbedded in walls (TR2 has a lot of this)
3. So you don't miss any items they drop.
You can disable it in TR4 with TREP. ;)

I actually find it easier to find the items they drop if they are next to the body. If they disappear, I lose track of where they died and find it harder to find the items.

Really? Cool!:D

It was bad enough with bodies going transparent and dissapearing before your eyes in TR4, then when Chronicles arrived you could see right through laras body or watch her going transparent depending on the viewing angle.
This made the games much less realistic than the earlier games.

^ Lara disappearing started on TR-4 as well. It makes sense because you have to jump on the right places, and it's hard to see them if Lara is in front of you ;)
The disappearing corpse from TR-4 till Anniversary were due to system's memory or something. As technology advenced as far as map, graphics and detail, the system asked too many resources to let the body laying there and it would cause unecessary slow downs.
Seems they found a solution, since it is confirmed on Underworld that the bodies will remains there :D

Less realistic, maybe, but much prettier. I have great affection for transparent Lara from TR4 & 5 - makes for some amazing screenshots. :D

That happens in TR4 as well :)
I also had an idea why the corpses disappear (in TRA, which I'm playing atm, maybe also for the other games where the corpses disappear). Maybe because they don't want that you can stand in them because that's not so realistic. And if you could stand on them, then you could skip areas or it could block entries.
this thread made me lol
Bodies started to disappear from tr4 :wve: And now in tru they will remain like in tr1-tr3

Two of the earlier games had giant bouncing crystals, though. How do you explain that? :p

I wouldn't take Chi to task Teeth, he can explain anything ;) :D

Takes a bit of getting used to all these bodies still lying around, when I backed tracked yesterday, I though oh no another wolf must have missed that one..........but on closer inspection he had already been dispatched!.....thankfully
Sounds like your somebody who goes after all the kills :mis:

Its tidier. I prefer them to disappear or I'd really begin to lose my way.

Lose your way? How?

I don't know...Like if its one of those days and everytime you come out of a door, the main area(hall of records for example) looks a little different...I don't know...I get easily disoriented around a mess (with the possible exception of the one in my room of course)

I like the bodies as trophies and proof that I vanquished such an enemy, which is why the mummies and atlantean mutants dissapointed me, They exploded!!! I no longer could prove the existance of atlantis, or that I vanquised the torso.
Plus, their explosions could hurt you if you were close enough to them :p
They looked pretty cool though, even if the explosions were 2D sprites. :p

Yeah, And the non-disappearing bodies are back in Underworld! :D
I'm glad the bodies didn't dissappear in TR1-3, and that they were just "ghosts" that you could walk through.
But they had to get rid of them in TR4 due to the engine,
if you've used the Level Editor with TREP, and set it so that enemies didn't dissappear, it left their bodies solid, and you couldn't get over them.
So if you killed an enemy in a narrow hall,
or had to push an object where an enemy had fallen.
You wouldn't be able to because they would physically take up the whole square they died on with their solid bodies.
Now it would have been cool if they died and stayed solid the whole game and you could move them out of the way. :) Like in City of the Dead when you move the body off the trap door. Much more realistic.

What I wanted was to be able to step on bodies! Then Lara could jump higher.
And as long as I'm wishing, how about a pole vault move?

Well...I think that TR4 has dead bodies dissapearing. :) I heard that dissapearing bodies and for saving memory of the game.
...But I bet Underworld doesnt make bodies dissapear! :D

Oh that would be great.
Or to put the bodies on switches to open doors like in God of War.
:)
So many neat things to do with the dead.
