A court in the Netherlands has ruled that the Linux distributor may use the name "Lindows" for general corporate purposes, even though the company earlier was ordered to cease using it in the Benelux region for its operating system and Web site.

Lindows has adopted the alternate name "Linspire" to comply with that ruling.

The latest court decision recognizes that not all uses of the "Lindows" name constitute an infringement on the "Windows" trademark. A victory for Microsoft could have forced the Linux distributor to change its name business name globally.

The Dutch judge noted that Lindows currently uses the "Lindows" name only in the small print on its Web site and product documentation, and clearly states that it is not affiliated with Microsoft.
