Well, it all depends on what you expect and want from a game.
With it being an "oldie", the graphics and engine don't compare to the new games of today.
Yet if you like exploring, atmosphere, wondering where to go and what to do next, then I would definitely recommend it. But then I am slightly biased - I love the old games and Legend did simply not do it for me.
Give it a try anyway, they are sold for next to nothing these days.

Happy raiding.

If your buying it for PC then trust me, you'll need a lot of tuts to set it up.
Loads of them on that site which I cannot remember :(

If your getting it on PS then you'll have no problems :)

I recommend getting the game, it rocks my sox! lol

I find the PS is on it's way to being a PC. As the PS3 needs to actually install the games :yik:

Compared to the previous two.

Well...Im getting it on PS because Im not sure If Vista would work perfectly with TR1, and then I have to get a bunch of downloads to make it work, and Im not allowed to download stuff on the computer...Well...Its my older bro's but still.

So yeah. Im getting it on PS. Well, my sister wants it and she wants it on PS so...^^

Oh no! She's liable to feel empowered and more confident, and less prone to defer to her elders, especially you! :D;)

More seriously, there are some scares, and she should expect to die at regular intervals.

Tomb Raider is mostly about finding your way and solving puzzles, but dangerous animals frequently attack suddenly, plus occasional humans.

Learning the controls can be a little frustrating, but it's easier than learning to ride a bicycle.

Oh.
Well, the whole point of the TR series is to kill dangerous animals and solve puzzles. Well, my sister tryed the game in my cousin's house and only played the first 2 levels and she wanted the game. So I think its good to buy.:)

Get the Playstation version for the full atmoshphere and gameplay experience.

The PC version needs all kinds of tweaking with graphics and audio..and it still won't come close to the Playstation version.. you will tweak so much, you will drop dead out of boredom before you can see the opening FMV :o

To me the most epic, engulfing, engaging, exciting, moving game ever made.

That's what happened to me :(

I was so pleased that I got TR1 working at one stage on Vista, but I got bored of playing it, due to all the wait and overexcitement :(
Still don't want to play it much, only got to St. Francis Folly, then got bored :(

You'll get eaten by the almighty underpus if you don't buy this game. :D

No, seriously, it's an amazing game and I think it's a definite must buy if you like TR games. I would buy the PS version, though, as modern PC's ( and Windows versions ) don't like much that aged game. :tmb:

It does get more scary as the game progresses - the final two levels particularly. But don't let that put you off buying it because it is a truly classic game.

To be honest I was like 14 years old when I first played it but I jumped at nearly anything that aproached suddenly, way before the last levels, including the stupid gorillas (oh GOD how I hate the gorillas). :vlol:

Yes, it's a great game to buy, not to download illegally.

Plus from what I've read around, most of the pirated copies of TR1 have undetectable spyware hidden in them.

I have a vibe that games sold illegaly, don't work as well as games sold legally.
I guess it's because I feel safer aiming towards the legal way :)

Trust me, the Atlantean levels are sooooo cute :mis:

Cute cat mummies skinless. Woops, I mean cute bunny rabbits, and guinea pigs. :mis:

That is true, pirated games generally don't come with all the files needed to properly operate, they just come with the bare minimum. A prime example of this is the pirated copy of Manhunt 1 for PC. It's missing the file that controls the gravity, so if you knock over a trash can, it's going to float around making noises forever.

I don't want to say too much about it because it can look like I am glorifying pirated copies...but you are wrong there.

If you know where to look, you can get a full working version of any game 2 weeks before the game is out (meaning original retail copies in the distribution process)... PC, PS3, Xbox 360, etcetera...the full DVDs.

It just misses the plastic case and booklet :o

Before someone accuses me..I don't have to get the pirated copies because my dad has a computer shop, so we get the games in advance anyhow. I will be playing a legal copy of Underworld, 1 week before anyone on this forum will...except maybe Justin but I will have a less biased review :ton:

PC version of TR1 is definitely worth it IMO (especially if you have Glidos and the texture packs).

Getting all the sounds on it can be a bit trying but I'd rather live without them than play it on a Playstation with substandard graphics. I started the series back in early '97 on the PSX but I quickly warmed up to the PC version not too long after once I saw how much better the visuals were.

29-06-08, 00:28
That's the difference between you and me, which I respect.

To you those graphics with Glidos/texture packs look better (technically yes they do) and enhance the gameplay and experience... but to me, it doesn't look like original TR1 (looks more like something from TRLE) and the enhanced graphics ruin the original atmosphere and experience for some reason for me.

I prefer the grainy shimmering PSX graphics and I always play it on a 12 year old Playstation :o

yesrushdt
29-06-08, 01:17
Totally understood. I played the PSX version over Christmas just for the hell of it.:D Beyond the texture warping in the graphics it has held up fairly well for a nearly 12 year old game.

What brought this up? I agree it's important to buy games, not steal them, but what are you, an Eidos employee?

BTW, if the spyware is undetectable, how come anyone knows it's there?

So what's your agenda?

I just know how easy it is to download the game now, and may seem tempting. I didn't really care about the whole stealing part since you can't really "buy" Tomb Raider anymore anyway.

OK, sorry to be so paranoid. But I bought a new TR Trilogy online about 8 months ago.

The first TR games are so cheap I can't really think why would anyone even bother to get a pirate copy...

BTW I really don't like that "enhanced" screenshot either... The various textures seem to not fit well with each other or something... I prefer my old school ugly TR1. :vlol:

As I said previously, this must be a trick question...;)

The game is unmatched in every way by any of its successors. Any gamer of today who decides to play it, after getting over the initial shock of the old timer graphics will soon be immersed in the game play and story. And magically the graphics will over time become better and better to you, as the brain and your imagination work to flesh out this world completely. And by the time you get to St. Francis Folly (and probably sooner), you will see it for the remarkable and beautiful game it truly is.

I do suggest that you play it on the pc though. This way you can use the fantastic high resolution graphics (http://www.tombraiderxtra.com/) in future games.

That looks very good! I got to give it a try someday.

But I think the textures are a great part of a level's personality. Some of those textures completely change the mood of the level, if you will.
