Michael Schumacher put in another dominant performance to take victory at the European Grand Prix in front of over 100,000 adoring fans.

The World Champion controlled the race almost from the start to the finish, taking victory from team-mate Rubens Barrichello by a comfortable 17.9 seconds. And Jenson Button took yet another third place with another mature performance in his BAR.

But it was another miserable race for both the McLaren and Williams teams. On the first lap Juan Pablo Montoya collided heavily with Ralf Schumacher in the scrum going into turn one. Ralf was then forced into the path of Cristiano da Matta’s Toyota, ending the unfortunate Brazilian’s race as well.

Montoya’s damaged car was patched up, but he could not do better than an eventual 8th placed finish. And McLaren’s terrible luck shows no signs of easing – with both Kimi Raikkonen and David Coulthard retiring with mechanical failures, despite promising pace that saw Raikkonen running as high as second place – and Coulthard storming from 18th to 9th on the first lap.

Takuma Sato drove an excellent race and looked set for a podium in the closing stages, after his brilliant P2 qualifying performance. But he made an error trying to pass Barrichello with a very aggressive move, breaking his nose cone against the side of the Brazilian’s Ferrari, which forced him to make an extra pitstop. Shortly afterwards he was forced to retire by another mechanical failure.

Trulli and Alonso took fourth and fifth places for Renault, with Giancarlo Fisichella putting in a very strong performance to take sixth in his Sauber. Jaguar’s Mark Webber and Williams’ Juan Pablo Montoya made up the rest of the point scoring positions.

Michael Schumacher’s lead in the championship is now extended to 14 points over Rubens Barrichello, with Button in third place on 38 points.
