View Full Version : Format a large volume drive

I have a 200gb hard drive that apparently was formatted FAT32 when I got it. After doing a little research I find that XP will not format it to its full capacity. This drive will only format to 32GB. I also read that if I use FDisk from a Windows 98 disk then I'd be able to format it NTFS at full capacity. My question is: Does anyone have a formatting utility they could reccomend I could use right from XP? Obviously the built in formatting can't do it for me.

Have you ever used CCleaner, that gets rid of annoying rubbish on your PC it has really been good for me. :)

You will find jumpers (connectors) on the HDD. You can either set the HDD to format in 32GB clips, or as a large volume. There will be a jumper map on the drive, and the jumpers are between the IDE slot and power slot. Obviously power down your PC completely when administering the jumper settings.

Strange. I didn't have to mess with jumpers at all. I have one 40GB and one 62GB partition, both FAT32, and didn't have a problem. But I think I used PartitionMagic to format them. I don't trust Windows to do things like that :D

I should have been clearer in my post. Sorry.
I do not have the cap limit jumper setting enabled on this drive. Ubuntu will format the entire 200gb just fine, but when I hook it up to my Windows machine, the Windows disk manager is only able to show it as a 32gb drive.
So I'm asking if there is a partitioning program you could suggest so I don't have to hunt down a windows 98 disc.

are you sure that you are not just looking at an EISA configuration partition? 32 MB is about the normal size for those. Check to see if there is a second partition that makes up the rest of the drive to the right of this EISA partition. That is how my C: drive is on my Dell.

At any rate, when I took Ubuntu off of my machine, the drive was formatted with ext3 filesystem, which the full amount of showed up for in Windows' disk management (although the drive did not show up in my computer). I was able to format the drive as NTFS through disc management in Windows. Of course I had to boot off of the windows disc to rewrite the boot parameters.

Perhaps try using Ubuntu to format the drive as ext2 or ext3 filesystem and then boot into windows and format as NTFS.

Nope it's showing up as 32gb. Either way I'll try your suggestion of formatting with Ubuntu first and see if it works. Thanks.

The whole drive BTW, i.e. repartition it in Ubuntu to make one partition, then format in XP as NTFS.

It's the weirdest thing. I formatted the whole drive in Ubuntu and it formatted at the full capacity. Then when I hook it into my XP machine, it shows as a 32GB drive still. I've hooked it up via IDE and with a USB adapter. I also tried just installing XP onto the drive after formatting the entire 200GB with Ubuntu and it still only shows up as 32GB during the Windows installation.

1. Do you have other large volumes working OK on this PC?

2. Did the FS conversion get right? Check file system type on that drive (maybe it's FAT32 still).

Anyway run Diagnose.exe (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/diagnose.exe) and post the report for us to have information about your motherboard and BIOS.

I can upload a BootDisk[ette] creator for you (including Win98 Diskette image) :)

1. At the moment I have a 120GB IDE drive running fine.

2. Good question I'll check that.
