View Full Version : Myst fan were art thou?
So among you gamers who is a fan of this series? Myst is one of my top three favourite videogame series despite not having played Myst V : End of Ages yet (I'm postponing the inevitable :().
Riven, in particular, influenced me in more ways than one. It's the more believable of fantasy worlds in all of videogaming, in my opinion (even though I still prefer the likes of Panzer Dragoon). The attention to detail is superb and the game's atmosphere makes you feel it could be a real place.
The music, the characters, the scenarios, the puzzles.... I can't help fantasizing about Riven ever since I was 12.
So what's your favourite Myst game, fellow D'ni? :)

The only two that I played were the original, "Myst", and "Uru". I enjoyed the controllability and puzzles of Uru much more so than Myst. Matter of fact, the first time through Myst, I had no speakers. Imagine doing some of the sound based puzzles with no sound! Irritating. Although, I did like the fact that you could loose the game in Myst - where as with Uru, you can not loose. In fact, there were two ways to loose and one way to win. Win by collecting all the white pages, loose by collecting all the blue or red pages. (at least from what I can remember.) I wish that Uru offered that. Were the other games more to that affect or no?
Anyone here played Uru Live? Does it cost anything? If so, is it worth it? Whats it like? Most importantly, does Uru Live get much action anymore?
Do any of the extra book slots in Relto get filled up by playing Uru Live? I know that if you download the expansion pack -"to D'ni", there is an extra book or two that it provides. And there is a pay for expansion pack that I have no clue how many books it provides. I am guessing that there are supposed to be a lot of expansions made to that game based on the amount of empty book slots when playing just the basic game (or even the free expansion).

So among you gamers who is a fan of this series? Me! Me! :jmp: :vlol:
It's so rare to see anyone that even knows about the series, so it's nice to see a thread about it. I've played Riven which was amazing. I especially loved the monorail ride to the different areas, the underground mine cart ride and the submarine. :D
But my fav has to be Myst III. I loved everything about it. The organic puzzles using sunlight were pure genius. And it's also the only one that I could actually do the puzzles without resorting to a walkthrough. :D
Oh yes, these games are masterpieces :) I think my favourite game is Riven, but my favourite age all of all definately Amateria (sp?) from Myst 3. The puzzles in that level were awesome, and the end of level movie was great :) I think spire was my favourite level for looks and sounds (I love that music you get when you go down through the second cloud layer :)) though.

Uru is more of a spin-off really and it's currently enjoying a timed server support (so people can play online for a little while longer). There have been some problems regarding the online support due to financial and structural problems at Cyanworlds. As for Myst, you basically committed a crime by playing it with no sound. If there is a series where sound is very important it's Myst. Not just for clues, but for immersion. And yes, other Myst games also feature bad endings (Riven has a lot of them depending on the context). :)
It's so rare to see anyone that even knows about the series, so it's nice to see a thread about it.
You'd figure that for such a high selling game series, more people would have actually played it :p Part of it is due to the fact that Myst was one of the first games that appealed to much much wider audience than your usual gaming crowd. I mean, if you post in Myst board like I do, you'll see people well into their 70s, obsessing over these games :) It's something very cool to see, and it sort of helps validate my eternal love for games (seeing as how it definitely shows people of all ages can enjoy them). Not that I'm too bothered with what non-gamers think :p

You've just mentioned my favourite game for each of those games actually :) But I still prefer Riven beyond anything else, in great part because Robyn Miller composed the music (back then it was more eerie and dark and subdued) and because there was a sense of real cohesiveness in the age of Riven. You can see they clearly took their time in fleshing out every aspect of the age's flora/fauna/culture/story/history. And Gehn has got to be one of the best "villains" in videogaming. I know all of the monologues in Riven by heart :pi:

I'm excited because I just recently got realMyst which has an extra age at the end. It has better graphics and 3D controls (rather than clicking between screens) although I'm finding the controls to be a little strange. I didn't really start it yet, though (busy with other games and a few library books).
As for my favorite game in the series, I love Myst 1-4 and it's really hard to choose. I will have to go with Riven, though, because it is definitely the most comprehensive game in the series. The puzzles are sheer genius and they spread out across the really huge world of Riven but it all makes sense :D In the other games the puzzles are a little more localized for the most part so there's not the profound sense of "Oh my god! I get how it all fits together now! In your face, fire marbles!!!" :p
Now, from the other thread where we were off topic :)
Didn't find Uru's controls that bad. And what's wrong wtih having a checkpoint-based saving system?
I found the controls to be very unresponsive, which really sucked for the jumping sections. As for checkpoints, I hate them and I really truly hate them in a puzzle game where I should be able to save whenever I want, but now I gotta redo the entire frigging thing just because little idiot went and jumped off a cliff :hea: (And yes, "little idiot" looked like me so I was actually cursing myself while playing :vlol:).
I played Myst V's demo and liked it. I'll see how it turned out soon enough.(first game I'm going to play after the exams).
Well, maybe you will like it, but I found it to be very repetitive and tedious. I feel it lacked the intrigue and great diversity of puzzles from Myst 1-4.
Edit: For clarification, it's like in Myst 1-4 I had a general idea of what I needed to do (collect pages in Myst 1, for example) but getting to each thing was a real challenge and every puzzle was rather different. With Uru and Myst V, it's very much simplified. In Uru I just need to keep collecting those handprints over and over again, 6 for every realm, and many of the puzzles are geared more towards getting around the sloppy controls rather than actually figuring things out. Then in Myst V, I have to collect symbols over and over again. Thankfully the controls are decent and there aren't any acrobatic sections (plus I can save anywhere) but it just didn't seem as inspired as Myst 1-4.
I have played Myst V: End of Ages (got it last christmas :)), but I'm helplessly stuck on the first proper puzzle :p I don't really like the fact that nothing is pre-rendered any more, it took a lot of the beauty away IMO. It feels a lot more like a computer game than in previous games.
Isn't Myst that first person "adventure" game where you have to find pages from books?
I can't say I enjoyed it all that much... also I don't remember any of the plot to be honest :/
The only game of these I played was Riven, but I loved it a lot. One of my favorite games. :)

I played Myst long ago (in 1994. or so) so I don't remember it much, other than it looked amazing for the time and had wickedly clever puzzles. I really should pick up one of the sequels one of these days...
i finished riven a few years back.
it has a truly eerie silent gameworld. brilliant.
it just makes you think "who lives here? where are they all?"
i also obtained realmyst, but it has vista issues i never could sort out, it would boot up once, and then the second time the app wouldn't load.
also bought exile on PS2. wasn't impressed, took it back.
I have a friend who liked playing the first Myst, I haven't myself but would like to.

From what I am hearing, it definitely sounds like the other "myst series" games are pretty good. I'll have to look into getting them!
Despite Uru being considered as a spin-off, It still holds the basic elements of a Myst Game in my opinion and I consider it to still be a part of the series. And yes, it was a crime to play Myst without sound.:( By the way, I used to read gaming magazines during the time when I was playing Myst and there was an article about Pyst (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyst). Havent played it, but I can understand where the idea came from, Myst can be a frustrating game at times, but worth it.

Myst 1 was the very first game I ever played. Pretty much the only one my father was interested in as well, so we played it together. We got stuck many times, and occasionally consulted the hintbook for principles about how to get through the various blinds we found ourselves in.
I also enjoyed Riven a great deal, though the puzzles were so complex that I wouldn't have had much of a clue as to how to go about solving them without the hint book. I didn't make liberal use of it, though.
I haven't played the other entries in the series, though I'd like to. I'm glad Myst continues to be successful. I'd heard that 2/3 of the people who played it weren't even gamers themselves. Some people hate the game, and it's far too subtle for them, I suppose. But I was engrossed.

Well in all fairness no game should have a checkpoint system then, lest they ruin the experience for the player :p
Like I said, I can comment much on Uru other than I prefer to see it as the spin-off it essentially is and the part that I have played wasn't that unpleasant (wasn't that gripping either, though)
Glad you picked Riven, though, it shows good taste :p
And glad to see more people posting. I mean, Myst was the best selling game of all time up until the Sims came along so I expected a lot of responses.

I've been saying that for years! :D

I am so going to quote this the next time you call me crazy :vlol:
On a side note, I got Myst and Pyst at the same time. Pyst was quite hilarious :D It just has random screens which are vandalized mockeries of different places in Myst, and then for each screen you can click around and funny things happen. Like for the library screen, there's a note and a crazy/desperate sounding guy says frantically, "I can't close the freaking bookcase, I can't open the freaking door, there's NO...WAY...OUT!!!" :vlol:

You best start learning to adapt then:p
My problem with being able to save anywhere is that I start taking fewer and fewer risks. Don't even get me started on quicksave systems.

What have you got against my beloved quicksaves? :p In any case, I'm the opposite. When I have to rely on freaking checkpoints, I end up taking no risks whatsoever and just concentrate on getting from one checkpoint to the next, which totally sucks all of the fun out of the game for me. When I have a good save-anywhere system, I feel much more free and able to run around, explore, and kill myself in all sorts of risky ways just because I know I won't have to repeat too much when I load.
If a game is only difficult because it keeps forcing me to redo sections over and over again, then I get very angry and end up hating the game. That's probably why Egypt is my least favorite section of TRA. I got through it once without cheats and I never want to do it again.

Well I obviously can not relate. Egypt's traps might have been hard, but they never took you by surprise. It was all about timing. Every game forces you to redo sections over and over if you can't succeed :ton:
I think you need to change your mindset as a gamer :p It's not like your under penalty of (real life) death if you take risks. I think a game that makes you take no risks isn't as fulfilling.

But the controls suck and the perch poles are glitchy, so I end up having to redo the same boring sections over and over again just because of faulty game mechanics coupled with a limited save system :hea: Not to mention Egypt was so monochromatic and dull that I couldn't even enjoy the scenery on each subsequent time through the area, so that just made it more aggravating.

My mindset as a gamer is just fine. I have played tons of challenging, fulfilling games which allowed me to save anywhere, and many of them even had quick-save features. I think a game is much less fulfilling if it resorts to cheap tricks like limiting my ability to save just to make the game seem harder or longer than it really is. Such games like that aren't worth my time, and even if I do enjoy parts of them the first time through I end up never wanting to play them again (at least not without cheating in some way). For example, Final Fantasy VII had some good parts, but the saving system was so mind-numbingly awful that I will never play that game again and I'm in no hurry to play any of the other Final Fantasy games either out of concern that they'll pull the same crap on me.

You should be in no hurry for entirely different reasons in FF's case:p
Anyway, I'd say that very rarely outside of PC gaming have games let people save anywhere. It's a standard much like, say, boss battles. Having grown up with a lot of console games I see no problem in that. I take it for granted.
I respect you opinion of course:)
Except when you call Egypt dull! Egypt was very well portrayed imo. Don't know what is this dull you talk about, but the architecture felt very inspired to me. As for being monochromatic, it's realism. If they were to portray Egypt with a color scheme close to that of TR1, I would personally sue them!!

I've gotten several consoles recently, but I'm a PC gamer through and through. I expect any and all challenges to come from the game itself rather than from the game interface or system functions. As far as the game is concerned, I am god, and if I have to leave then the game world freezes exactly as it is until I return. When the game gets uppity and thinks it can dictate my life by not letting me leave until I reach a save point, then that's simply unacceptable :p

I've seen pictures and documentaries of real Egyptian ruins and they are so colorful and beautiful. The grayed-out unappealing mess in TRA does not represent real Egyptian ruins. Besides that, my vision really sucks. I see color and movement very well, but detail not so much. I don't care how detailed the graphics are if they go and take away the color. Realism aside (although I do think TR1 was more realistic) the TR1 color scheme was much prettier so I prefer it without any hesitation. Angel_14 made a "next gen" mod for TRA where she increased the color saturation and sharpened the textures. It looked so much better. I'm not sure, but I think even the 360 version of TRA was more colorful.

The Egyptian ruins that are well preserved are often well kept chambers. Stll, there are some fresco-like painted walls in the game. And things like the scarabs and whatnot bring some color into the picture.
But as for TR1 being more realistic I can't really agree, and I don't think it's that subjective. Certainly not as far as sand is concerned. There is no such thing as orange sand in Karnak or Giza.

But there is yellow sand in Khamoon ;)
Seriously, though, pictures of Egyptian ruins have sand ranging anywhere from yellowish to reddish. I don't know if it depends on time of day or what, but there's definitely some leeway there to have colorful sand in the game :)

I r Riven nerd :mis:
Funny story about that creature actually. It was named after Marty O'Donell composer of the soundtracks for the Halo series. This is was obviously before Halo 1, even. Marty kept saying he wanted to compose the soundtrack for the Myst games and pitched he's ideas numerous times to Cyan. They were interested but decided to acknowledge him by naming one of the creatures after him (Ytram being Marty backwards) :D
I mean, stop in your tracks TRF Riven fans. If you haven't already you NEED to check this one site about all sorts of easter eggs and meanings behind things. You'll have just as much fun with it than actually playing the game. I don't know if I can post the link seeing as how we can't advertise sites around here. Or is it ok for me to post it?
Anyway I also can point you out in the direction of where to download a clip made my Marty that he used to make a pitch to Cyan.:)

I was super young when these came out, but my totally non-gamer dad had them and beat them with no help from any strategy guide or anything haha, he's crazy! It entertained me to just walk around the worlds.
Anyway, I figured I could get Myst on the DS now and have another go at it!
This thread encouraged me to try Myst V again after having got to the observatory stage and given up right at the start. While I was playing I drew one of the symbols on the tablet (one of the ones that looks like pacman) to see if it would get me anywhere... and it did strangely enough. The bahro collected it and took it to the end of the level, even though the symbol I drew doesn't really look anything like the one you need to get to the end of the level :p. I guess the moral is be careful what you're drawing on that tablet :p
