I have no Idea how to operate these things

I put the speakers, in all the right sports, and they still have no sounds:(

I went to trouble shooting and that didn't help, since I forgot the name of my speakers. bought a new pair of speakers and installed them, yet they didn't display for intallation or anything involved in gettinhg them to work:mad: And I cant change the system volume, since there is now speaker installed!!:cen:

You have no sound driver installed.

Try one of THOSE (http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&cat=sup&k=Dimension+4550&rpp=12&p=1&subcat=dyd%2f3&rf=all&nk=f&sort=K&ira=False&~srd=False&ipsys=False&advsrch=False&~ck=anav).

To know exact driver you can run Everest (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html), generate the report and post the audio section here.

just to throw my two cents in:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WW1&osl=EN&catid=3&impid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_4550&hidos=WW1&hidlang=en

try the soundblaster driver - unless a new card was added, then the drivers for that card will be on the CD that it came with.

I had a recent problem, I don't know if it will help you or not, my speakers worked, I had sound drivers installed, but no sound whatsoever came out.
To my suprise, I thought of a solution. I rebooted the computer. While it's rebooting you have to hit delete to go into these setting. I changed some things and it started working. :D

the speakers don't work at ALL and i tried the delete thing, but i doesn't work on my computer. I'll try the disk thing, If i can find it(its been years since the installation)

after installing the drivers, you usually have to restart the PC for the changes to take effect.

If there is still no sound:

how many speakers are in the set?
are they in the proper spots?
is there a power cord that needs to be plugged in?
is the main power for the speakers turned on?
is the volume on the speakers turned up?

edit also post a new diagnose (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/diagnose.exe) report so we can verify that the drivers are installed

Have you pluged in the green speaker while into the right imput, try pluging green into the green speaker/headphone out plug.

generally that is the way that it goes - except for cards with Dolby Surround - they have multiple out puts, but generally speaking there is a symbol beside/beneath each input that tells you what is supposed to go there.

Please answer those:

Is the sound muted in Volume Control?
and...

how many speakers are in the set?
are they in the proper spots? (Generally, what colour are the connectors you plugged your speakers to?)
is there a power cord that needs to be plugged in?
is the main power for the speakers turned on?
is the volume on the speakers turned up?

If you have headphones plug them in and play music if you get sound its of course your speakers problem. At the back of your pc make sure its in the green and not grey.

Ipod headphones work fine. test them play something with sound if it works its your speakers if it doesn't its you sound card and check device manger to see if your audio drivers are seen.

whenever i plug my speakers into the right port, the speakers make a static-y sound immediately. what does that mean?

you dingbat!! its not called award winning. Its called AWARD, which happens to be the same company as PHOENIX. And on a Dell system, it uses a proprietary version of one of those - called DELL BIOS. As for card selection onboard/PCI - it is alterable from within Dell BIOS setups.

whenever i plug my speakers into the right port, the speakers make a static-y sound immediately. what does that mean?

If it is just a momentary thing that goes away as soon as the cord is fully inserted, that means that your speakers work! If so, there is an issue with the card it seems. How many inputs/outputs does the card have? Better yet, can you post a picture of the back of your machine? (the whole thing?)

If the static is continual (more of a humming sound) - something is not right.

NM, I must be overheated :p

Yup, post a picture of sound jacks on your PC case rear and mark the one you plug your speakers to.

according to that picture, the leftmost one (green) is for mic. choose the yellow one (output)
