View Full Version : 3DS Max Biped model help =/
Hey :)
I've extracted TRA Lara and imported it in 3DS Max. All works fine except that biped model is a real pain in the behind :p
EDIT : New problem : 3th post
(http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showpost.php?p=2861788&postcount=3)
The problem is, you can clearly see that the envelope is around the arm, yet it doesn't take up all of the vertices :

Help ?
Edit : My bad; I put a 0 next to strength :p
But whenever i have a new problem I'll post back here :)
hey how did you extract the model? could you put it up for download??
Use 3DRipperDX to extract scenes from DX9 games :)
Btw, does anyone have tips on doing fingers or even better, how to exclude some vertex ?
New problem =/
Alright, there's this one vertic which is clearly in the bip, but it simply doesn't follow the rest :
http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/5322/larahelp3xr7.jpg
1 : It's clearly red in the wireframe
2 : Aswell as in Perspective
3 : This is the one
4 : Doesn't move =/
How can I solve this problem ?
is it poss that you put the file on download for us because it not working for me and i rly want to mess about with it in 3ds max
:):):):)
Hey there :)
Envelopes never work right from the get-go, you'll need to manually assign each vertex to the bone/biped part that should be moving it.
To do that:
Apply a SKIN modifier to Lara
Under "bones" on the rollout, add all the Biped pieces.
Select a biped part from the list under "bones" (like her right hand)
Now click on "Edit Envelopes"
Check the box next to "vertices" under "select"
Select a group of vertices you want to modify (like said, the verts that make up her right hand)
Now that you have those selected, look back over the rollout and find "Weight Properties"
Change the "Abs. Effect" to 1. Now all those verts will move exactly like the biped's right hand.
Now you want to taper that off around her wrist, giving it Abs. of like 0.5
Then, move on to her right forearm (which should also have 0.5 Abs over her wrist, to make her move smooth)
Good luck! If you need more help just ask, I'll do pictures when I get home if you want.
Hey, Scia!
Have you done any new things with TR-models since the Natla renders? Would be really interested in seeing some more of your work :).
Wow, I'm surprised you remember those! :D
Unfortunately I don't have a copy of TRA anymore, I loaned it to a friend and never saw it again. So, after a recent harddrive crash and switch to Vista, I don't have any TR models to work with anymore
I might rip some things out of the demo though and mess around with them. I think I might actually have Natla on a disc somewhere, maybe I'll see if I can find her and finish my detail upgrades... :cln:
I'm interested to see what BadBoy70 has in store for us though :tmb:

Hey Scia :)
Thanks. I got it to work now. I made a small animation and I'm working on getting used to Reactor now. The water is fuuuuun :D
Do you want me to extract the models you want ?
I remember your thread too, I was thinking about it yesterday because I remember you did something funky with Natla's hair. I was wondering how i could do that, but i guess it's too advanced for me atm :p
I'm going to write a tutorial for people who want to extract and edit things too :)
Edit: There's no Tutorial subforum, I've PMed Justin to ask where to put it
since there's a TRLE Tutorial subforum too.
Edit: Forgot to mention, my biped model is finished. Except for the fingers but I cba to do that atm.
Yet another edit : Does anyone know how to do facial animations ?
Hey that would be great! If you could just send me Lara I would be able to do work with that. I found Natla on a disc, though her hair is in the funky stages of editing (see (http://i36.tinypic.com/2vwwp5k.jpg)). I wish I had the last one that was corrupted (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showpost.php?p=1946282&postcount=89), but who knows. Maybe I'll start over.
and yes, reactor is fun. I'm uploading a video to youtube of a ragdoll biped test I did to a character from the game FEAR. Sent her through something like a pinball machine of neon colored obstacles .
Natla was where I learned the laws of 3ds Max hair (remember the testing phase (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showpost.php?p=1930247&postcount=66)?). I've gotten pretty used to it now, and if you'd like I'd be happy to help you out with it, especially since there are a major shortage of online tutorials for 3ds hair (most people use external plugins).
Facial animations are tricky for me still, but I can help with that too.
Your tutorial is great, btw :)

What Lara(s) would you like ? :)
And from what game ?
Do you want her in a certain position ( jumping, running, crouching,... or simply standing )
Yeah, Ragdoll is fun. But I can't get the water to render, it's working in the preview tho =/
Ah yes, it was the testing phase I remembered :D
It'd be awesome if you could help out with hair.
I had to figure out how to animate a biped model myself cause of the lack of such tutorials. I could only find how to make it walk which I never learned since I cba :p
Still, those biped models are hard to get them right and not dragging other vertices all around the place.
Facial animations aren't that important atm, but it'd be good to know how to do it.
Thanks :)

Anniversary Lara, and just standing please. I want to rig her, so the more basic her pose the better. Thank you :D
Reactor water doesn't render, it's just a space warp. You have to bind a plane to it. Create a plan over it (subdivisions don't have to match the space warp) and then look over toward the top left of the UI. Next to the undo/redo arrows, you'll see icons with boxes. You want the one labeled Bind to Space Warp. Click that, then click on the plane you made, then click and drag to your space warp (alternatively, you can use select by name). Then just apply whatever texture you want to the plane and you're all set.
I added you on MSN, btw. I'd love to help out with hair whenever you're ready to give it a go.
Sure, I'll send you the Title Screen one :)
It's the one I used but it was quite her to make a biped model.
Do you want me to send my biped model ? If so, how do i do that and know that textures and bip are included ? :p
Wouldn't it be better if I gave you a jumping Lara ?
I think it'd be easier since she's with her arms spread :)
Thanks, I'll give it a shot :D
Okay :) I'm usually online betwen 6 and 11 PM.
But I'm going now :)
