View Full Version : Comparing the Keys.
Here we go people. I know the key has been mentioned several times, but as far as i know, nobody has done a visual comparison yet. So here it is. People have mentioned the Anniversary keys from St Francis' Folly. The Balcony Key found in the Coliseum level is also shown. Here they are to refresh people's memory.

...and here's the Key from the new trailer, which has been posted already, but here it is along side the others.
http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/3899/trailerkeykz4.th.jpg (http://img301.imageshack.us/my.php?image=trailerkeykz4.jpg)
So, as you can see the key from the trailer is identical to those from Anniversary. The only difference is, it seems to be missing the jewel from the center. I just wanted to post them up for people who couldn't remember what the original Anniversary keys looked like. Also, to clear up any doubt that people were having. Feel free to discuss and post up any images of similar keys from the Tomb Raider series.
Oh, and....
http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/5264/racetracknm6.th.jpg (http://img224.imageshack.us/my.php?image=racetracknm6.jpg)
Also, as far as i know, there was no key for Lara's treasure room. It was activated by clicking a variety of switches. The last one, being timed. If i'm wrong correct me.
I think Hephaestus' key has the more relevance. As I said in another thread:
Hephaestus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hephaestus) (pronounced /hɨˈfiːstəs/ or /hɨˈfɛstəs/; Greek Ἥφαιστος Hēphaistos) was a Greek god whose Roman equivalent was Vulcan. He was the god of technology, blacksmiths, craftsmen, artisans, sculptors, metals, metallurgy, fire and volcanoes.Get it?. Fire = burn :mis:.
Considering this one has no jewel and yet is the same design perhaps it is Tihocan's key.
Could be a nod to fans or a nod to the story. In the podcast they did say its very layered and fans should search for clues to the game.
Aren't most of the keys designs from Anniversary the same ?
I don't know if I remember well but I think the Coliseum level had a key exactly like that.
Or perhaps it isn't a key at all?
Yeah, the resemblance is striking.
But what if is sometjing random like a clock-hand that just happen to look like a key?
Ockham's Razor- the simplest answer is nearly always the answer :o
I'm to be proven wrong :o
I guess, i noticed this as soon as it popped up but didnt think anything of it at all. Just a little random easter egg i guessed.

Cool comparison! That puts that to bed. :tmb:
I think it could conceivably be any of the keys, but the Hephaestus one obviously has the greatest link with Underworld, with the Thor reference.
I still think it's the Hephaestus' key. ;)

Right. We know that Thor was in the original, TR1, and then in TRA, he has been replaced by Hephaestus. There must be a link. But it could only be the standard version of all keys in TR's made by Crystal, and so it's a room key for Croft Manor.

I think this proves you're wrong. I mean, click on the images and look at them closely. It's not a clock hand. It's a key. A key from St Francis' Folly. They are IDENTICAL.

Well another thing I noticed is that the key in the explosion reminds me of the key from the TR3 in the mansion. The trophy key i think it was. I dont know. It has those swirls :). But great comparsion
http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa255/Faylen45/a_key.png
I really wonder what the key is for. A hidden passageway under the house and through explosion thats the only way to retrieve it? In the mansion, there are hidden passageways like to the cellar and the trophy room and the attic. Hey that makes me wonder, how come the Manor never had attic access? Hmm...I bet thats where the key was initally before the explosion :)
I just had a thought...
Maybe thats just one of many different items/artefacts that shes collected thats simply mixed into the debree with the explosion.

but why would they go through the trouble of making it so prominent, AND passing the camera through it?
I knew it, they are identical, except for the gem of course
thanks for the comparison
I think is Hephaestus key, maybe there is some relation between his hammer and the Thor's

Yea thats the main point CD have made an effort for the key to stand out from the other debree! there has got to be something significant..i agree its the st francis folly key which ties in with Thor.

If you look closely, you notice that it's the back of the key that we see in the trailer.

i just had a brilliant idea...
the key looks like the St. Francis folly key, right?
what if it's telling us that we'll be returning to Greece?
there's still one location that hasn't been revealed, i think...
i read that somewhere...
what if it's Greece?
i think it would make sense, seeing as Tihocan wasn't present in his tomb. maybe he's still somewhere in Greece?

The fact that looks like anni keys it is because it's Tomb Raider and all keys look the same, that's it.

Well if she were to go back to greece surly it would be because of the folly key which was found in greece were just trying to piece it together

That's rubbish, lol. How can you possibly think that? lol. All keys from Tomb Raider do NOT look the same. Why would Lara have her window/door keys shaped IDENTICALLY to the Anniversary keys? And further more, why would CD shove something as meaningless as a window/door key so prominently into their trailer? This key is certainly from the Folly. To doubt it is ridiculous in my opinion.
Like I said before many times the key is definalty from the Folly, it might be from the Hephaestus room or "Thor's room with the hammer" Lara is looking for Thors hammer in Underworld. That is the only reason why I think the Key is shown in the trailer.
Well if she were to go back to greece surly it would be because of the folly key which was found in greece were just trying to piece it together
I just can't see us going back we explord what is Thors room ( can't remember the name begining with H) I can't see what else there is in the folly. We went down to the collesiam which had the same sort of key and then to where Tihocan is suposed to be kept but he wasn't.
Or maybe, (just wierd speculation just poped into head) Key which opens the gate to the underworld. Sorry sounds stupid I know but Thor, greece, key looks the same, gate to underworld might need some sort of key. Sorry sounds stupid i know.

Nicely spotted by the way. However, it looks as if the "Gem" part is made from the same material as the key itself. Like a replica key would be....
Interesting thought. It would back up the theory that the key itself is a red herring, distracting us from less obvious clues :hea:

I have run this scene through every Photoshop filter I know and I'm not seeing any definitive colour in the gem so it does seem at this point the "gem" part is made of the same material as the rest of the key.
Maybe we do return to the Folly but to an area previously unseen and maybe through a gap in a wall we can see the main hall through it.
Considering this one has no jewel and yet is the same design perhaps it is Tihocan's key.
Aussie, I hope so that Tihocan (one of the best characters in the entire series) make an appearence... but, what key of Tihocan? I just cant remember one with that name... maybe because I played the game a long time ago :cln:...

it's not generic, it is only for the greece levels
I always thought of the key as a metaphor for 'throwing away the key' (right after you lock your secrets). My interpretation of the trailer was Lara:
1. Turning her back on her past
2. Blowing up her past
3. Throwing away the key to her secrets
Just my thoughts

I wouldn't mind another location in greece but anywhere but the folly again. Anyways why would she go back there?
I think it would be really interesting to return to the folly or to find ourselves explore a location or 2 from previous TR's. Imagine (not having to do the same puzzles etc) but to explore an already plundered area, to have to find another way through or an other entry/exit point.
In anniversary in the tomb of qualopec (Ithink) one of the mummys swings for you and when your leaving with the first piece of the scion and the place is crumbling, qualopec starts to arise?! Could be some reason for going back there..... depending how CD take the story?
Hmm intriguing theories! Gotta say if this is meant specifically to be the Greece keys then I certainly wouldn't mind returning for Underworld - The Folly was amazing in Anniversary! :D
It does seem odd that they would create that specific style of ornate key for the trailer if not for some reason at least...
Like I said before, the key design isn't generic, is only used on Greece, the 4 keys of St. Francis' Folly, and one from the Coliseum.
The other keys on the game are on Peru's City of Vilcabamba, which is completely different. and on Egypt's Sanctuary of the Scion, the ank keys, which don't actually look like keys

I just want a key that can be seen when Lara is going to use it. Not like, in the old TRs when the keys are very tiny but when you look at them in the inventory they look large. I like that key in the screenshot. :)

What if it's a key to a secret door, passage on the manor. Like someone said it could be hidden in that clock. It would be kinda boring if it was just a regular manor door key for rooms.

I think it is a key from greece, but a different one, this key is facing the other way so we can't see the gem. Does the globe resemble the one from atlas' room? And in the centre of the main hall there seems to be a kind or metal spikey object.

Maybe there is an amazing mysterious connection just waiting to be found and discovered.
Or, just maybe, they decided to reuse some of the old meshes in the new game, such as trees, rocks, grasses, which is fine IMO.
Don't know how it's possible, cause it's a different maker. :tea:
Right. We know that Thor was in the original, TR1, and then in TRA, he has been replaced by Hephaestus. There must be a link. But it could only be the standard version of all keys in TR's made by Crystal, and so it's a room key for Croft Manor.
Nope. This kind of key can only be found in Anniversary's Greece levels.
Back to Greece? Great :tmb:
