Kudos to anyone who gets the King reference.;)
Anywho, I've heard so many people say how creepy the heartbeat sounds are in atlantis. Well I can't hear it! Is it only in the PC version?

darn it...
Ambience noises were prety scary in TRA tho
I was wondering about this too. I can remember though from when I was younger I did hear some heartbeat in the Atlantis levels, but replaying them many years later on a PS2 they weren't there anymore
So I just put it down to some glitch on the PS2 that meant it didn't play properly.
the heart beat scares the crap out me :P. actually i think the heart beat of the pyramid because the floors are like heart string and stuff. like the pyramid is a living thing...creepy

Haha, yep Mr Stephen King ;)
There are "heartbeats" in Atlantis, they are quite audible if you use ear/headphones!
I think they reused this background sound for Area 51 in TR3
You know what I never heard this either, all I got was the same background noises from the first levels throughout the whole game. This must be a problem with the PS version.
I know the sound though because I have heard it in TR2 (underwater levels) and TR3 (Nevada compound levels).
I'll have to get the PC version now to experience it :)

I never played the ps1 version so I wouldn't know but yup its creepy.
I find myself peeking through the sides of the monitor thinking its another one of those dreaded creatures.
TR1 made me **** my pants on several occasions.

Yes I think you are right. :tmb:
TR1 made me **** my pants on several occasions.
:vlol: Yeah, me also, TR1 was very scary at moments.....those pesky living mummies in Egypt can cause more than one heart attack.
The heartbeat background sound is awesome, it gives a strong sense of tension and I get nervous even now that I'm much older than when I played TR1 for the first time. :p
I don't have an original copy of TR1 for PS, so I cannot check if it is true the heartbeat isn't there in the PS version. :(

Yeah. The worst part is approaching them a step at a time wondering when they'll awaken, or if they'll awaken at all.

Ever played the game without stopping from when the day you got it? I was up still at about 1:40am in the morning when i reached the atlantis level and what a bad time to play it and also on ps1 too!
As the ps1 plays no background music in the atlantis levels on ps1 and you have to come face to face with fear when an egg explodes, it frightened me to death! Also it still does now!

Yeah. That thing coming out of the egg itself threw Lara off the ledge for me. Creepy creepy. I had to turn it off and calm myself for a bit.
He wasn't so hard to kill though in the end.
whole great pyramid was some kind of living structure with pulsing meaty walls :D it was kinda scary

I am in Atlantis atm, playing on PSX. If you should here it from the beginning, then no, it's not in the PS version.

Those heartbeats are the ambient sound. If you can't hear it on the PC, click HERE (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/faq/tr1.html).
Just to clarify once and for all: the heartbeat sound is in the PC version, and only the PC version. Ambient sounds were added to compensate for the music having to be sacrificed. However, the Peru ambience is occasionally triggered at certain points in each level in the PS1 and Saturn versions, but it doesn't loop - it just plays through once, like a music track.
So PC players get ambience, PS1 players get music. And the new Glidos patch allows for both! :D
The Heartbeats are just a stroke of genius.
Even with its ancient feeble tech, TR1 managed to create an incredible tense atmosphere that hasn't been repeated in the more modern games. Legend/TRA feel dead, lifeless and without tension. Even AOD was a little lacking in parts.
I notice that many old games did things (perhaps accidentaly) that are brilliant and haven't been done better since. In the old Doom for example, the sound of doors opening was sometimes like a monster screeching - really unsettling. You could hear the sound of monster in the background, even though you couldn't see them or tell where they were coming from. Sometimes they would even play monster sounds when there was none there :D
In all the fanciness of modern graphics (and movies/tv), I sometimes think they miss the fundamentals.
(Sorry if that sounded like a rant)

I've got it too. And I do recall that I could hear it and especially (more volume?) in one particular room. There is a door or wall you can see through, I think you have to go around another way to get to the room you can see...
In the other room... Somewhere there is a place where a boulder rolls down a slope....
Yes. It's been a long time and that's about all I remember about it. :o

Wait, so theres no music in the PC version? I love TR1's score its brilliant. My PS2 is broken so I was thinking of getting TR1 again on PC anyway, those heartbeats are just an extra reason!

So I just put it down to some glitch on the PS2 that meant it didn't play properly.
I doubt it. I put it on my PS1 yesterday and i still didn't hear it. So it may not be your PS2.
It's not in the PS1 version. Ever. At all. They threw it into the PC version as a compromise for the lack of music. :p
It is in the PS1 versions of TR2 and 3 though. :)
