View Full Version : Do you think the Atlantis level did Tomb Raider Justice?
I don't think it did. I mean, Ican ruins, Greece/Roman levels, Egyptain pyramids were fine. I loved them due to the fact that I like to learn about those places. Atlantis would've been a great addition, but going to Natla's mines and seeing a more modern cloning idea doesn't sound like Tomb Raiding to me. It's probably just me, but urbanized areas do not tie in in my opinion. Still, a great game. Hands down.

I think that the designers were faced with the challenge of making Atlantis vastly different from everything that went before it. Personally, I loved the look and feel of these levels, and didn't find them to be terribly urbanised. However, this is probably because I am familiar with the far too urban areas of Tomb Raider III (and, to a lesser extent, II) as well as Chronicles. These games, I feel, went too far with urban settings, and so sacrificed the classic feel of Tomb Raider. Compare, for example, Lara's trek through the barren Natla's mines to her jaunt through Area 51 and you may appreciate Atlantis a little more. ;)
On the other hand, I fully agree with your comment about the cloning idea. Personally, I found the inhabitants of Atlantis to be woefully unexplained and underdeveloped; and to this day I don't understand whether normal Atlanteans were supposed to be 'freakish mutants' or Natla had simply created a monstrous breed. If so, why were the background characters in her condemnation scene also shown as lizard-like mutants? All very confusing!

I'm not much of a fan of TR1, as it on PS, and I HATE playing TR games on the PS. But from the bits I've played, Atlantis made a nice change from the tombs. I for one can't stand tombs, and I like the urban bits of Tomb Raider.

Same :)
Atlantis was a good last level. she is in a pyramid after all.

remember what Lara said about it "like evolution on steroids". the mutants in the condemnation scene are a more finished and higher poly version of what she was creating (they have skin).
she was creating an army, using the Atlanteans and reworking them to what we see in the pyramid.
I might be a bit biased because I haven't played a lot of Tomb Raider games (like Tomb Rider III, Chronicles, Last Revelation, Angel of Darkness, and Legend), ut playing the uban bits of Tomb Raider II in Venice wasn't that exciting me. I didn't feel the overwelment (hope I spelled that right) that I did in TR. And in the oil rig level it was a little boring going through the modern age technology. But I did like the Tibet, underwater, and China levels.
When I first played Tomb Raider 1 in the late 90's (first TR I played was Tomb Raider 2), Atlantis level really scared the heck out of me. Mummies in Egypt were an easy piece of cake, but mutants in Atlantis were so terryfying and those beating walls were really scary. But at the same time those made Atlantis a really redoubtable place. So I do think the Atlantis level did Tomb Raider justice.
I really liked Tomb Raider, from the first till the last second.
Including the Natla's mines:)
It isn't really Tomb Raiding, that's true.
The fact that we can run around in Lara's mansion isn't really archeologic either, but despite that, I still like to do so:)
Atlantis looks a lot more "Tomby" in TRA, but no I guess I'm gonna disagree with you Troy, Atlantis was simply wonderful in an out-of-this-world sort of way.
I love Atlantis; I think it's an awesome level. All of the levels have parts where there is danger, but you usually get a break from it to admire the scenery from time to time. But with Atlantis, it is danger and intensity all the way. I get really immersed in that level.
For me a big yes, it did justice hell yeah. :) Epic, big, complex and with a perfect sense of inmersion..... I love classic TR's. :p And Atlantis is a truly great level for me, freakish walls aside.... ;)

Atlantis was very different to the earlier levels but it certainly did TR justice as far as I was concerned. I was on tender hooks all the time. The creepy walls, the mutants, trying to get past all the obstacles in Laras way. It was brilliant.

This discussion is old as ****. There's always someone out there who will define Tomb Raider by locations but others - such as myself - will give more importance to atmosphere and even gameplay. Trying to define what is and isn't "tomb raiderish" is a discussion that won't lead anywhere since it's totally subjective.
Personally, I would imagine this series would get old really fast if for, like, the first 3 games they constantly stick to the same "ancient ruins" atmosphere. I mean, people already complained that these 3 games were too similar to each other, now imagine if on top of that they all took place in similar locations!!
Atlantis was the perfect final location. I think it's great when Lara ends her adventure in a totally out of this world scenario, such as this or the Floating Islands, it gives us a sense that she went really far and seen things "normal people" can only dream of.

I kind of agree, but at least it doesn't seem as "random" like the Floating Islands level in TRII
YES IN DEED it was the PERFECT FINAL LOCATION. And I hate to say this but Anniversary ruined the one bit where they brought up Atlantis too early in the game while in TR, you don't even know where this adventure leads you to. And that was a BIG surprise when I entered Atlantis. It was so unexpected and messed up and creepy but AWESOME and yes like another said, EPIC.
Atlantis level was just the best location in TR. Scary, bloody and complicated. Without serious puzzles but with frigging awesome adrenalin feeling.

I loved TR1 Atlantis, TR2 Floating Islands and TR3 Antarctica. All very freaky, atmospheric and scary.
The climax of the game is supposed to make he player feel out of place, scared, and not knowing what to do. In TR1-3, that was done phenominally. I think that it left the player with a memorable experience, it certainly did so with me. ;)

you can't say the original formula doesn't make the original formula.

Just remember: TR1 defined what "Tomb Raider" is. That's just the way it is. That out-of-place, creepy feeling that the Atlantis portion of TR1 provided is what Tomb Raider was intended to be. It's amazing, and I'll always love the original more than all other titles. :)
the only deffect to me its that there wanst more of it,... shame TRA wasnt really improving what was already done, but reimagining,...
atlantis was great...

Same here. I will never forget how realistic Natla's Mines which looked like regular mines turned into a creepy, meaty and bloody Atlantis. It's an amazing feeling. Tr1 one of the best. Doesn't matter how many other tr's are yet to come
And I always thought Atlantis was a beautiful and peaceful place :D CORE had another point of view and their imagination ruled :vlol: :tmb:
:wve:
^THat was what was so memorable about it. The fact that things weren't what you expected. Most of us thought atlantis to be peacfull, that's whatmde that sector so memorable.
I'd rather go to CORE's atlantis than a peacfull one, more fun. ;)
yup more fun for monsters tearing you apart :D
Would go there just to meet miss Natla
I recently replayed Natla's Mines, Atlantis and The Great Pyramid, and I'm in love with this world. I'm really happy that Gold expaded on it. Atlantis is very, very difficult, and it only gets harder. Atlantean Stronghold and The Hive were some of the most difficult levels in terms of enemies.
Atlantis wasn't bad as a section portraying a fantasy ancient civilization. At the end of the day whether it's based on history or created specifically for the game I would like it to be all about ancient ruins.
Yeah, I see a lot of you guys' points. I never played TR Gold and I might have enjoyed Atlantis more the first time through. But I've played Anniversary and I thought that they really tuned down Natla's Mines. I mean, in TR, after you kill the cowboy and go down to the lava pit it looks so difficult. Atlantis is a pretty enjoyable level but I still like Peru, Greece, and Egypt better, but that's just because I like ancient historical stuff like that.

i would have liked to see the original textures but improved drastically but keeping the same design as the original. The textures gave what is the TR1 Atlantis levels the feeling of tr1.

The Atlantis level is very cool, I replayed the level, and it's still as great as ever.

Agreed!:tmb:
The way Core managed to gradually transform the mines to a living hell was trully amazing.:)

TR1 is absolutely unremittingly, painfully intense for its last three levels. That's what made them work.

This. Really frakkin' true.
Everytime you think you're done, you realize you're standing in the middle of a impaling door. Or you over shoot your running and realize that you're on a pillar and just fell to your death. And then the screen starts to shake.
I think the Atlantis levels fit in fine, because it was during a time before the Egyptian, Romans and Incas where Lara visited, but with a modern twist.
It didn't do it justice, but it had some nice touches of its own!
I esp like the little greek like symbols decorating everywhere and stone work.
Had they implemented that with the gorey meaty gigeresque machine, It would have been much more awesome.
TR1 was subject to many limitations of its time that aren't here now. I imagined Atlantis with Rib like pillars made of bone, doorways like mouths with teeth, pulsing nerves running along walls like the wiring in a super computer.
I imagined pulsing tubes moving waste fluids, bio-luminescent organs lighting the insides, respiring bronchial structures standing up like trees, feelers sensing for human presence!
I dont think it did justice either but that level was amazingly good and hard.
