View Full Version : Optimizing my internet connection?

spider-pig

I'm starting a dedicated server, but my connection speed is too slow :S
Is there any way to optimize my connection using my computer?
Or I have to upgrade my connection by talking with my ISP?

Several questions are still to be answered:

What exactly dedicated server (what game if it's a game)?
How fast is your current connection?
Do you have a router?

Run ARDiag.exe (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/ardiag.exe) and post the report. The best way to optimize is killing resourse eating processes.

that will optimize your processing - but connection speed wise will take a faster connection with ISP

1. MapleStory Private Server
2. 6\8Mb (not sure, and I know it sucks)
3. Yes

Heres ARDiag:

go to http://www.speedtest.net/ and click on the yellow pyramid to run the speed test. post the info for both the upload and download speed. Do this test running everything that you would have running while the server software is up in order to get a realistic idea of the bandwidth that will be available to it.

should be able to post something like this:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/300710980.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

the upload speed is the main thing that you will want to know about as that is the speed at which you will be sending packets out to the clients which would be connecting to your machine.

also, do you know which ports you need to forward on the router yet, and how to do it?

I'd like to know about this too, how can I make my browsing speed faster? I'm paying for a 10 kb/s download speed but I'm not getting that, I have a router that's hooked to my PC, PS2, PS3 and it sends wireless internet to another PC in my house, here is my test result:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/300731317.png (http://www.speedtest.net)
Not only is my download speed less than half of what I'm supposed to be getting, but my browsing speed is extremely slow, specially with web sites that are heavy in data. So what can I do about this?

spikejones
25-07-08, 19:36
^ you've definitely got the high speed uploads - better than 1 Mbps.

But your d/l speed is showing as slower than mine. However, here is the thing - the more devices you have on the network accessing the internet at the same time, the slower your d/l speed will be to each device. Plus you are going through the router, and depending on your distance from the router (on wireless) the slower the throughput will be.

edit by the way - you must be paying for 10 Mbps, not kbps

also curious - how long are the cables running from the router to each of the wired device (best to keep under 300 ft)

Death Mask

^^
Yeah you're right, it's 10 Mbps that I'm paying for, anyways do the devices that are plugged to my router affect the speed of my web surfing even if they're completely turned off?

And right now I'm using my wireless computer which is about 40 ft from my router and there is a bunch of walls that the signal has to go through, but everything else is in the same room (PC, PS3, PS2).

The thing that I care about the most is my surfing speed, it takes my computer so long to load a new web page, specially when I play flash videos on the web, they buffer only to about 10% and then stop. When I download files the speed is really good but everything else is very slow.

spikejones
25-07-08, 20:28
^ do you have the latest plugins installed for your browser? How many different applications do you have running at the same time that utilize the internet? (the more apps running, the less bandwidth available to each) Even at your speed you have listed, you should not experience any hangs like you speak of.

Check for latest flash plugin here:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

and no, if the devices are shut off - they should not be affecting you wan d/l speed on your PC. If that was the case when you ran your test, and there were no other internet apps with an open connection running on your PC - call your ISP and complain that you are only getting less than half of the bandwidth that you are paying for.

Death Mask

^^
I already had that update but thanks for posting it, I only have one application running that utilizes the internet (Opera 9.5).

I'm starting to think it's either my router or my cable modem, and the reason is because almost every day I have to reset both devices, specially when it rains, they're very unstable too, when I check my signal strength it always gives me a different number.
Or maybe I should buy a different wireless card.

But I will complain to my ISP because even on my PC that's plugged directly to my router I don't get the speeds that I should be getting.

Sorry about the laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate reply :(
Here's my speedtest, note that it's night here, so the router is more laggy. I'll post another speedtest tomorow morning when the router is fresh ;)

I don't know wath's happening, until 90% of the upload test the upload is stably 300~ and at exacly 91% it goes down to 172 :\

A bit off-topic.... :

time of day has nothing to do with your router - only with the internet in general (really the ISP cable network you are on). as for the behavior of your upload speed, it may have something to do with your service - some ISPs provide a speed booster for the first "X" amount of a transfer (although this is generally on the download side). 172 kbps - 300 kbps is not really sufficient speed to run a dedicated server that will have open connections all the time, especially if that server is on a network with other machines that access the internet. It will result in very slow connections across the board. Consider upgrading to a service that will provide you with at least 1000 kbps (1 Mbps) upload speed.

As for that second one you posted - yes there are services that give speeds of about 100 Mbps and they are expensive. I would not consider purchasing one of these plans unless you are going to be making revenue off of running your server.

About the processes using the bandwidth: Any application slows the d/l and sometimes u/l speed (torrents, etc). The worst are VPN clients here, so if you have e.g. Hamachi running and connected (even not transferring data actually), you'll get lower speeds for other apps (browser, server, whatever).

I know a program that you can use to optimize your Internet connection, easily :)

It's called TuneUp, 2008 is the best. Although it's a 30 day trial, to download, it's very useful.

Scroll down to get to download.

Entering your e-mail address is optional.

It also fixes errors in the Registry Editor, it just deletes Registry keys no longer needed, and gets rid of Junk Data. I had about 40GB of Junk data, on my lovely 160GB HDD. It doesn't effect your personal files, just system data that's never used. However, it does scan some data which would effect your system if was deleted, but it doesn't delete it. Mainly it gets rid of things like .log files, Internet Cache, Mozilla FireFox Cache etc.

time of day has nothing to do with your router - only with the internet in general (really the ISP cable network you are on). as for the behavior of your upload speed, it may have something to do with your service - some ISPs provide a speed booster for the first "X" amount of a transfer (although this is generally on the download side).

Yhea, I think i'll buy one of those 1mbps upload things
Also, the upload-goes-to-172 was the server I was testing on.
Here's the server closer to the yellow pyramid one:

I might also try tuneup.
