I was cleaning up my parents' laptop and discovered I had no idea where half of the storage on the harddrive comes from. See this image:

It says 65 gigs are used up, while every file on the drive (also hidden ones) only use up 22 as far as I can see.

Does anyone have any idea where this comes from? And of course, how to free it up again?

Backup maybe or system restore

Do the OS system files count on that?

System Restore is a likely culprit, especially if you use Spybot Search and Destroy or other security programs that make them. It can really chomp your hard drive space after a while.

Yeah, the OS system files are also counted as far as I know.

And as far as I know there is no system restore or backup made... But ThinkPad has lots of extra software among which is a backup thingie, so I'll see if I can find anything it has been doing automatically... But, wouldn't those just be files also? How are they hidden?

^ If System Restore Service is running it creates restore points automatically. I suggest the following procedure:

1. In Windows Explorer right click the drive, select Properties, General tab, press Cleanup button. In the new dialog select Additional tab, and press Delete button in System Restore area - this will erase all restore points except the last one!

2. Run CCLeaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/download/) to kill the junk.

3. Run Scandisk and perform a full scan with automatic repair.

4. Defragment the drive/s.

Thanks EscondeR, I'll do that next time I'm there :D This may be a while though since I don't visit my parents all that often. So I might bump this thread a long time from now...
