To yesterday"

The war in your head
That I did not understand"

Lots of evanescence songs are sad

lithium as you said

the only one is the saddest to me
When they all come crashing down- midflight
you know you're not the only one
when they're so alone
they find a back door out of life
you know you're not the only one
X7QKGD33oPw
The
We're all grieving
lost and bleeding

at 1:28 is the absolute saddest part of their songs, but it's very beautiful at the same time.

and hello as mentioned

I can't decide others

I can't belive how 'Mad World' was a christmas number 1Better than the last three Christmas number 1 songs though. :p X Factor has now basically hijacked the Christmas number 1 slot. The last three Christmas number 1 songs were all from the X Factor winners of that year and had nothing to do with Christmas.

True, but why a sad christmas number 1. They should never be sad ( or full of wannabe's)Hey, I'm not the one who decides the Christmas number 1 spot. If I had my way it'd be a Christmas song every year. Unfortunately though, we haven't had a proper Christmas number 1 since 2004.

Lots of evanescence songs are sad
I can't find them sad at all

For sadness, listen to any Doom Metal song, that's sad stuff, not mainstream rock, neither Within Temptation's typical pop ballads, I mean c'mon ;)

Listen to my favourite song - "Death Come Near Me", by Draconian, sadder than that you won't find anywhere.

1)Shannon by Henry Gross

2)Running Bear by Various Artists

3)Last Kiss by Various Artists

4)Goodbye To Love by The Carpenters

5)Diary by Bread

The song Shannon, is about Carl Wilson's (of the Beach boys) dog who was pulled out to sea by a rip current and died. It always reminds me of my own dogs (Bandit) passing, he died the year this song was a hit and was always on the radio. It is a very sad song regardless.

i'm pretty shocked that i'm the only one who's suggested "Hurt".

"God's Cut You Down" by Johnny Cash is another good one.. it has just about every celebrity known to man in it.. Even Amy Lee pops up.. as well as Johnny Depp, the Dixie Chicks, Keith Richards, Iggy Pop, Kid Rock, Sheryl Crow, Anthony Kiedes, Chris Rock, Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Kanye West, Corrine Bailey Rae, Kate Moss, Whoopi Goldberg, Jay Z, Travis Barker, Bono, Terrence Howard, the list goes on.

1. Hallelujah - Rufus Wainwright

Maybe there's a God above
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
It's not a cry you can hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

2. Demolition Lovers - My Chemical Romance

And as we're falling down, and in this pool of blood
And as we're touching hands, and as we're falling down
And in this pool of blood, and as we're falling down
I'll see your eyes, and in this pool of blood
I'll meet your eyes, I mean this forever.

3. My Immortal- Evanescence

When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have
All of me

4. Early Sunsets Over Monroeville - My Chemical Romance
But does anyone notice?
But does anyone care?
And if I had the guts to put this to your head...
And would anything matter if you're already dead?
And now should I be shocked by the last thing you said?
Before I pull this trigger,
Your eyes vacant and stained...
And in saying you loved me,
Made things harder at best,
And these words changing nothing
As your body remains,
And there's no room in this hell,
There's no room in the next,
And our memories defeat us,
And I'll end this direst.

5. Return To Oz - Scissor Sisters

Is this the return to Oz?
The grass is dead, the gold is brown
and the sky has claws.
There's a wind-up man walking round and round
What once was emerald city is now a crystal town.

Only 5? Of course everyones picks are all relative.

1. Within Temptation ~ "All I Need"
My song of the year.

"Don't tear me down for all I need,
make my heart a better place,
give me something i can believe,
don't tear it down,
whats left of me..

I tried many times but nothing was real
make it fade away, don't break me down
I want to believe that this is for real
save me from my fear
don't tear me down"

2. The Offspring ~ "Kristy, Are you doing OK"
I personally can't relate to this song, but this song makes me feel better when i hear it.

"oh clouds of time seem to rain on innocence left behind,
it never goes away"

3. Muse ~ "Blackout"
I like everything about this song, lyrically + musically

"don't kid yourself
and don't fool yourself
this love's too good to last"

4. PJ Harvey ~ "That was my Veil"
Very minimalist but possibly the most pensive song PJ has done. Perfect lyrics! I will quote it all.

"It starts at daylight
I see him beneath my sad eyes
I hear him breathing
Oh lover need you to leave me
No never thought you'd leave

That was my veil
That was my time
Once held secret
But now lies

No words can heal my heart
inside i'm broken
now its done
was she a pretty girl?
does she have pretty hair?
was she soft spoken?
was there a love there?

Give back my veil
Give me back my time
Once held secret
you give me lies..."

5. NIN ~ "Right where it belongs"
this line has the most impact.

"what if everything around you was an elaborate dream?"

NIN ~ [I]"?"

I love that song,
it is very sad,
The line...

"A rose that wont bloom
Winters Kept you,"

and

"And I shouldv'e spoke out and I'm so sorry now,
I didn't know cos we were so young"

Very emotional,

I also think

3 Doors Down- Fathers Son is very sad as well;)

That's funny, my friend says "Tears in Heaven" is not sad, but neutral.I also find it melancholic, and when I'm in a bad mood, even depressing.
I also find sad:

System of a Down - Lonely Day
Terry Jacks - Seasons in the Sun
Joseph Arthur - Honey and the Moon
Guns N' Roses - Don't Cry, November Rain

My best sad songs are-

Aimee Mann - It's Not
Evanescence - The Last Song I'm Wasting On You
Placebo - Pierrot The Clown
Kate Bush - This Womans Work
Lucinda Williams - Like A Rose

Elysia, 'Just Like Anyone' is such a sad song. I really don't know how Aimee made a song that had such an impact that lasts just 1:23.

Together We Will Live Forever (composed by Clint Mansell - The Fountain OST) - this song makes me wanna cry almost every time, even though it has no lyrics. It´s a very beautiful and sad song.
Also a song Setsunai Omoi from a Jigoku Shoujo OST is very sad (again no lyrics).
Then Stranded by Saybia
(I took a life for granted
untill it slipped right through my fingers
although forever parted
I feel your prescence more than ever
there's no return from where you went
and it leaves me stranded
It's written in my heart
it's written in my soul now
all the memories torn in me a constant overload
It's written in the sky
it's written in the stars now
I'm haunted by the things I know I should've done
all the time we should have had is gone)

Oh, and Gabriel by Lamb is also very sad (at least for me).

Forgiven - Within Temptation < just don't know why, exactly :p

Hello - Evanescence

Like You - Evanescence
"I long to be like you, sis.
lay cold in the ground like you did."

Lithium - Evanescence

My Immortal - Evanescence
"when you cry I'd whipe away all of your tears,
when you scream I'd fight away all of your fears."

Because of you - Kelly Clarkson
"I cannot cry
Because I know that's weakness in your eyes
I'm forced to fake
A smile, a laugh every day of my life
My heart can't possibly break
When it wasn't even whole to start with"

"I watched you die
I heard you cry every night in your sleep
I was so young
You should have known better than to lean on me
You never thought of anyone else
You just saw your pain
And now I cry in the middle of the night
For the same damn thing"

Daniel - Elton John

Your eyes have died but you see more than I
Daniel you're a star in the face of the sky

They played this at my friends funeral. :(

Flights To the Sea (Lovely Rain) - Graham Coxon

Flights to the sea
Forgetting you
Forgetting me
I wanna love you in the sand
I won't let go of your hand
Lovely rain

So beautiful it makes me sad.

Veronica - Elvis Costello

Is it all in that pretty little head of yours?
What goes on in that place in the dark?
Well I used to know a girl and I would have sworn that her name was Veronica

Well she used to have a carefree mind of her own
And a delicate look in her eye
These days I'm afraid she's not even sure if her name is Veronica

CHORUS
Do you suppose, that waiting hands on eyes
Veronica has gone to hide
And all the time she laughs at those who shout
Her name and steal her clothes
Veronica
Veronica

Did the days drag by, did the favors wane
Did he roam down the town all the time
Will you wake from your dream, with a wolf at the door,
Reaching out for Veronica

Well it was all of sixty-five years ago
When the world was the street where she lived
And a young man sailed on a ship in the sea
With a picture of Veronica

On the "Empress of India" and as she closed her eyes upon the world
And picked upon the bones of last week's news
She spoke his name out loud again

CHORUS

Veronica sits in her favorite chair
and she sits very quiet and still
And they call her a name that they never get right
And if they don't then nobody else will

But she used to have a carefree mind of her own,
With a devilish look in her eye
Saying "You can call me anything you like,
But my name is Veronica"

The whole song is just amazing and I can't choose just one lyric. He is one of my all time favorites and I recomend him highly.

Baby Britian - Elliott Smith

Baby Britain feels the best floating over a sea of vodka
Separated from the rest
Fights problems with bigger problems
Sees the ocean fall and rise
Counts the waves that somehow didn't hit her
Water pouring from her eyes
Alcoholic and very bitter

For someone half as smart you'd be a work of art
You put yourself apart
And I can't help until you start

The Other End (Of the Telescope) - Elvis Costello

Shall we agree that just this once
I'm gonna change my life
Until it's just as tiny or important as you like?
And in time we won't even recall that we spoke
Words that turned out to be as big as smoke
As smoke that disappears in the air
There's always something that's smoldering somewhere

I know it don't make a difference to you
But oh! It sure made a difference to me
You'll see me off in the distance, I hope
At the other end
At the other end of the telescope.

The promise of indulgence in my confidential voice
Approached immortal danger but you'll never know how close
Then down the hall I overheard such a heavenly choir
They interrupted my evil designs
One day you are up in the clouds
The next thing you're down with the Sweet Adelines

(Chorus)

Lie down baby now don't say a word
There there baby your vision is blurred
Your head is so sore from all of that thinking
I don't want to hurt you now
But I think you're shrinking

You're half-naked ambition and you're half out of your wits
Or several tiny fractions that this portrait still omits
And it's so hard to pick the receiver up when I call
I never noticed you could be so small
The answer was under your nose but the question never arose

I know it don't make a difference to you
But oh! It sure made a difference to me
'Cause late in the evening as I sit here moping
With a bamboo needle on a shellac of Chopin
And the cast-iron heart that you failed to tear open
At the other end
At the other end of the telescope

Gotta add one more: Here Comes the Sun - The Beatles (George Harrison singing and I think he wrote it too)

Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
And I say it’s all right.
Little darling it’s been a long cold lonely winter,
Little darling it feels like years since it’s been here.
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
And I say it’s all right.
Little darling the smiles returning to their faces,
Little darling it seems like it’s years since it’s been here,
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
And I say it’s all right.
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes.
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes.
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes.
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes.
Little darling I feel that ice is slowly melting,
Little darling it seems like years since it’s been clear,
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
It’s all right, it’s all right.

it isn't sad in the same way that "Hurt" is.. but this one gets me all emotional, too.

I don't see how that version can have more "soul" since its a cover of the ORIGINAL - unless its a very surface version of spirit. I think the fact that Cash died soon after inbued it with a sentimental value. The lyrics and tone of the song were from Trent Reznor's personal experience and thoughts, that's the soul!

i think it sounds like it has more soul because of Johnny Cash's voice... you hear him sing, and with that, you hear alot of pain and sadness.

don't get all defensive on me just yet.. i didn't say i didn't like the original, i just prefer Johnny's.

I'm not defensive. I don't really care whether you like the original (or even any of it's covers). It just seems rather non sensible that a cover can have more "soul" than the original - except maybe in a superficial way, maybe you like the sound of his voice or whatever.. It doesn't equal soul though.

well, okay.. but really, Johnny Cash seems to have gone through more in his life, its coming from a deeper place. Trent is still fairly young.

Johnny Cash's music all seems to have that quality.. that sadness.. and ya know, it is possible for covers to be done better than the originals.

That's not superficial, by the way.. i simply have a preference. I apologize if my opinion is not to your liking, but it is as it stands.

No its not. Trent wrote the lyrics! That's "deeper" place it came from regardless of his age. Had Cash wrote the lyrics it would be different situation.

Don't be sorry.

Sure I like lyrics that touch me, but it was more meaningful to the original writer. It might have aesthetic qualities which you find better but that does not = soul

The lyrics and composition are from heart and mind of the original writer.

2 AM- Alexz Johnson
"If I said I was truly over you, my heart would say amen, but I'd give in to the cold caress of 2AM. If I admit I can't get used to this, would my heart break again? As I fall into the waiting arms of 2AM"

Urvine- Kelly Clarkson
"Are you there? Are you watching me? As I lie here on this floor. They say you feel what I do. They say you're here every moment. Will you stay, stay till the darkness leaves. Stay here with me. I know you're busy, I know I'm just one. But you might be the only the only one who sees me"

The Heart of the Matter- India.Arie
"I've been learning to live without you now. But I miss you sometimes. The more I know, the less I understand, and all the things I thought I knew. I'm learning them again. I've been tryin to get down to the heart of the matter, but my will gets weak, and my thoughts seem to scatter but I think it's about forgiveness, forgiveness, even if, even if, you don't love me anymore"

I don't find The Noose sad... I actually find it powerful and strangely sexy, in its own little way :tmb: (It is my favourite APC song, hands down!)

3 Libras can make me cry, though, simply because it is so beautiful and so full of yearning. I based an entire romantic subplot for two characters in a fanfic I write on this song - now whenever I hear it, all I can visualise are Jen and Valen, being awkward with each other... i think i find The Noose sad mainly because of my experiences... the lyrics really fit some people that i know.. people that really hurt me at a very lonely and confusing time in my life. If i could have the oportunity to say to them the things that are said in the song, i would.

You're right though, it is strangely sexy.

Yes, there is no doubt in anyone's mind that 3 Libras is very sad, i love the music video. Do you by chance have the Amotion dvd?? The commentary by Maynard is a really cool listen.

Songs about lost loves and the sense of bittersweet yearning that comes with it always makes me sob, for some reason. I R just a romantic silly, at the end of the day... :o (well, that and they have to be two of the most beautiful songs ever written and that this whole album reminds me so sharply of my years in the 6th Form and how great it was...)

Jeezy Creezy. So much Evanescence in this thread, you'd think nobody else wrote sad songs. I can't pick just five - anyone who can pick only five probably doesn't listen to enough - but here are some sad ones: D:

The Old Ways // Loreena McKennitt

Turning to go, I heard you call out my name,
Like a bird in a cage spreading its wings to fly.
"The old ways are lost," you sang as you flew
And I wondered why.

Cymbeline // Loreena McKennitt

Fear no more the frown o' th' great;
Thou art past the tyrant's stroke
Care no more to clothe and eat;
To thee the reed is as the oak.
The sceptre, learning, physic, must
All follow this and come to dust.

All lovers young, all lovers must
Consign to thee and come to dust.

Prospero's Speech // Loreena McKennitt

As you from your crimes would pardon'd be
Let your indulgence set me free.

10,000 Days [Wings Pt. 2] // TOOL

High is the way, but all eyes are upon the ground.
You were the light and the way they'll only read about.
I only pray Heaven knows when to lift you out.
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough;
You're going home.

Right In Two // TOOL

Silly monkeys.
Give them thumbs, they make a club and beat their brother down.
How they survive so misguided is a mystery.
Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability
To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here.

The Noose // A Perfect Circle

Recall the deeds as if
They're all someone else's
Atrocious stories.
Now you stand reborn before us all;
So glad to see you well.

Sleeping Beauty // A Perfect Circle

Drunk on ego,
Truly thought I could make it right
If I kissed you one more time to
Help you face the nightmare;
But you're far too poisoned for me.
Such a fool to think that I can wake you from your slumber,
That I could actually heal you.

Abandoned // Kamelot

Why, oh why my god,
Have you abandoned me
In my sobriety?

Behind the old façade
I'm your bewildered child,
So take me across the river wide.

Wander // Kamelot

Silently we wander
Into this void of consequence.
My shade will always haunt her,
But she will be my guiding light.

Silently we wander
In search of truth and confidence.
So many hopes were lost here
Along the way
From morning to night.

From ashes we were born;
In silence we unite.

Snowdrop // Roland Orzabal

The calm before the storm.
The bitter taste of mediocrity
Turning you inside out.
I'm waiting in the wings;
No news of joy - just more hypocrisy.
Oh, what a strange affair - we belong together.

hi overkill much))

The Offspring-Gone Away

Leaving flowers on your grave
Show that I still care
But black roses and hail mary’s
Can’t bring back what’s taken from me
I reach to the sky
And call out your name
And if I could trade
I would

And it feels
And it feels like
Heaven’s so far away
And it stings
Yeah it stings now
The world is so cold
Now that you’ve gone away

I swear if i see that video one time.. someone's going to pay. :pNever gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

That song is pretty good though, you've gotta admit. :p

Won't be everyones cup of tea but this song ALWAYS brings a tear to my eye. More for personal reasons but also for the song itself.

here we go. thats a different version to the one I posted before but nevermind.

The lyrics, too;

Am I loud and clear or am I breaking up?
Am I still your charm or am I just bad luck?
Are we getting closer, are we just getting more lost?
I'll show you mine if you show me yours first
Let's compare scars I'll tell you whose is worse
Let's unwrite these pages and replace them with our own words

[Chorus]
We live on front porches and swing life away
We get by just fine here on minimum wage
If love is a labor I'll slave 'til the end
I won't cross these streets until you hold my hand

I've been here so long; think that its time to move
The winter's so cold summer's over too soon
so let's pack our bags and settle down where palm trees grow
I've got some friends, some that I hardly know
But we've had some times I wouldn't trade for the world
We chase these days down with talks of the places that we will go

[Chorus]
We live on front porches and swing life away
We get by just fine here on minimum wage
If love is a labor I'll slave 'til the end
I won't cross these streets until you hold my hand, until you hold my hand

I'll show you mine if you show me yours first
Let's compare scars I'll tell you whose is worse
Let's unwrite these pages and replace them with our own words

[Chorus]
We live on front porches and swing life away
We get by just fine here on minimum wage
If love is a labor I'll slave 'til the end
I won't cross these streets until you hold my hand
