Ad-Aware (http://lavasoft.com/)
Spybot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)
Windows Defender (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx)

All three have free editions. :)

Notes on Spybot S&D... turn OFF the tea timer otherwise you could end up with some extremely botched installations as it constantly scans for registry changes... I only recommend it if you really know what it is talking about.

Turn ON the IE helper application if you use IE.

Keep the application updated

Run Immunization often

spybot does not do a guard application in the way that antiviruses do.. you have to run manual scan.

basically speaking, run through the wizard the first few times you use it until you are familiar with how to use it properly.

In the event that you ARE infected with spyware.... use that application in SAFE MODE.
