View Full Version : Something I haven't found in a video game, yet...
One of the pet peeves I have with video games is that there are usually only two (sometimes three) different speeds at which your character moves (e.g. walk/run or sneak/walk/run), with no variations or degrees therein. In other words, you move the controller a bit and your character walks, move it a little more and your character runs. That's it.
I've always wanted to find a game with more sensitivity in which your character increases/decreases its speed (i.e. sneak/walk/jog/run/sprint, etc.) depending on how much you move the controller.
How about you guys? Is this something that bothers you, as well, or am I just being petty here?
it doesn't bother me, but you raise a good point :D

Interesting that your user name is Agent47, a great series (Hitman, for those who don't know), that exemplifies exactly what I'm talking about - three speeds (sneak/walk/run), with no variation.
By no means am I saying that my pet peeve is any kind of "deal-breaker" (otherwise, I probably wouldn't be playing any video games), I'm just saying I would like a little more control over the my character's movements.
Commando Crawl/Crawl/Crouch Walk/Sneak/Walk/Jog/Run/Sprint
that would be cool. but they would have to configure all these speeds/ movement types with buttons too, not only the joystick, it would be really hard to do what you want.

You may be right, and I suppose that some of the movement speeds could depend on your stance (i.e. prone, crouch, walk), which would decrease the number of variations controlled by the controller.
But, I've always thought (while moving the controller) that "if I press it this much, I should be sneaking", "if I press it this much, I should be walking", "if I press it this much, I should be running", etc. In other words, I've always thought that I could control 3-6 different speeds with just the controller, as opposed to the standard 2 or 3 I am given.
Maybe:
(Xbox 360)
you just lightly push forward/ Medium push forward/ full push forward(on the analog stick)
Analog Stick: Jog/ Run/ Sprint
X(Hold) + Analog Stick: Commando Crawl/ Crawl/ Walk On Hands
A(Hold) + Analog Stick: Crouch Walk/ Sneak /Walk
Analog Stick +X(Tap)-Forward Roll
Analog Stick +X,X,X(Tap)- Front/Back Handsprings (2-3)/or Cartwheels
B(Tap)- Jump Up Low
B(Hold)- Jump Up High
Analog Stick+B(Tap)- Small Forward/Side/Back Jump
Analog Stick+B(Hold)- Big Forward/Side/Back Jump
Sprint+B(Tap)-Super Jump
Sprint+B(Hold)-Swan Dive
sorta got carried away. :)
i dont know if this would work though

Aeon Flux is very sensative :)
Yeah, I sit awake at night wishing game developers would stop wasting their time on innovation and refining current game play mechanics and instead work out how to include useless speed variations for a characters walking pace.
With the exception of stealth based games like Splinter Cell and Hitman I hate to walk in games anyway, why the hell would I want to run slightly slower or walk at a bit more of a brisk pace, it's a videogame not a dull-day-at-the-office simulator.

Sarcastic, snarky and snarly, aren't you? Pretty impressive for one reply to an innocuous post. Maybe you're a "run-and-gunner", and only like full speed running, but I don't, and I would appreciate more sensitivity in speed variation in a game. Why? Because I do play games like Hitman, which call for stealth. And which, I might add, is probably more realistic and, hence, not "useless".
And Feather Duster, I have not played Aeon Flux, nor, Leon S Kennedy, have I played Ty, but I'll look these games up and if any are third person shooters, I may give them a try. Thanks for the suggestions.
And robm_2007, are those controls for all Xbox games (I play a PS2), or just one particular game?
I think that the splinter cell games have a high level of variation, but there is only so much you can do with a joystick... :p

I just thought it would be funnier if I went a tad over the top with my reply, my days are those of boredom and repetition. Hope I didn't offend you. I'm a big fan of stealth games, from action based ones like MGS to thoughtful ones like Hitman and I've never felt the need for any additional speeds, in fact I think it would make the game play confusing and unnecessarily tricky as you wouldn't know which speed is safe to walk around in without being detected.

No worries, no offence taken. I hope you snap out of your days of "boredom and repetition".

wait, what? it was just an idea. :)

Oh, in that case, good idea, mate.
The reason no ones done it is it actually isn't comfortable to hold the analog sticks for a long time at anything other than the full travel of its tilt (ie flush to the plastic as far as it will go)
Some developer said something like that, i think it was for splinter cell...
I can't remember exactly, but I think GunValkyrie had not "walking" modes whatsoever. It was all progressive. But I could be mistaken, since I've last played it a long time ago.

That's interesting, I've never heard that reason before, but, now that i think about it, I'm not sure I believe it because I usually don't push the controller full tilt but keep it moving so that I can turn, stop, back-up, etc. Maybe, however, I don't play long enough for it to get uncomfortable.

thanks.

AoD had Stealth, walk, run and sprint. :p
That's 4!
(6 if you count the two crawls too, but I doubt they count?)

That's a start. Seeing as this is a Tomb Raider Forum, I should probably pick it up (I've only played Legend and Anniversary - great games and why I joined this site), but I've heard pretty mixed reviews about it. What's your take on Angel of Darkness?

I recommend reading through the AOD section of the forum. You're bound to find plenty of different opinions there. ;)
If you're patient and go into it with low expectations, you may enjoy it a lot....or absolutely hate it. :p

You should find a cheap copy, if you wanna try it.
It's .. not the best Tomb Raider out there. :p
I personally loved the game. Then again, I got a bugless copy (Only had a screaming glitch once or twice throughout my playthrough) and the story is among the best. :)

I think DEMENTO had running varations, she walks at diffrent speed, if she starts to run, she will soon get tired and run slower until she returns to walk.
