View Full Version : Legend crashing PC

Hi,
Hopefully someone might be able to help with this. With a few games I've been seeing my PC just turn off, like just now with TR:L. The display just stops but the fans and lights stay on. Also the music I ran in the background kept playing for a while afterwards, and the Caps Lock and Num Lock keys kept working until I had to restart the PC (hate doing that - had to do chkdisk last time).

At the moment it only happens in Legend, which I just installed on my new pc:
(Core 2 Duo 3Ghz, 4GB RAM PC2-8500, vista 64, Asus gtx 280)

The game runs fine until you either die (have only done so by failing a cutscene) or get to the next level screen showing the costume and click to start the next level. Following either of these two things the above happens.

Secondly, which might be a separate issue, clicking "Resume" once you've unlocked the next level lets you see the difficulty select screen (with costume) only briefly before I get an instant crash to desktop.

I went and got a diagnose.exe for this. The game should be patched...

Thanks for any help you can give,

Chris

Oh, yes. I just followed a tip for disabling bcdedit.exe from another thread and it didn't help.

LaraCroft90
11-10-08, 16:12
I also had the same problem, but then my computer totally crashed and then Windows didn't even start I had to format. And then the HD broke and I had to buy a new hard disk. But after formating the computer TRL didn't crash.

ChrisIVX
11-10-08, 16:30
Interesting. I haven't actually tried reinstalling yet. Still, forgive me if I don't feel like formatting the hard drive.

The other thing I tried was setting up my memory timings to what it should be. It didn't fix anything.

EscondeR

1. Revert your memory timings to default values that were set by BIOS automatically.

2. Try setting TRL to use those:

Disable Dynamic Textures....... Off
Enable FSAA.................... Off
Enable Full screen Effects..... Off
Enable VSync................... Off

3. Run ARDiag.exe (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/ardiag.exe) and post the report.

Thanks for the reply, EscondeR.

I wasn't sure which were the dynamic textures so just turned them all off (including Vsync, in setup). The game ran with no problems, (ignoring strange animations) except I lost my conveniently placed checkpoint so can't easily test which option was the culprit until tomorrow.

Here's the report anyway.

I'm curious to know why you suggest putting the BIOS settings back. Surely if it has automatically chosen a slower set of timings, it has chosen the wrong ones?

thanks

EDIT: Another thing, I noticed the little "Test Mode" sign above the start menu now. Google said it's becasue of disabling DEP, which I don't know anything about, then I stumbled across "bcdedit /set nointegritychecks OFF" but it didn't go away and now I'm not sure if it should be left OFF or ON... Suffice to say it makes me feel a bit daft. Any advice there? thanks a bunch

Oh, yes. I just followed a tip for disabling bcdedit.exe from another thread and it didn't help.

???
Can you post the link to that thread? What advice exactly did you follow?

I'm curious to know why you suggest putting the BIOS settings back. Surely if it has automatically chosen a slower set of timings, it has chosen the wrong ones?

Nope. It means the timings are of guaranteed compatibility with your system.

BTW, you can now enable the timeings/TRL settings one by one, to determine which one caused crashes :) I bet for timings though...

ChrisIVX

It was in another thread about Legend crashing (maybe two, can't remember):

http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?t=133990&highlight=legend+crashing
3rd post, by you, EscondeR :P links to:

http://www.tombraiderwiki.com/index.php/DEP

I'll get to testing it as soon as I can. It won't be the timings - that was something I tried to fix it, i.e. it was already broken.

EscondeR
12-10-08, 19:30
^ Actually disabling DEP service can help only when Legend refuses to start, not when it crashes in some places :)

ChrisIVX
12-10-08, 22:10
Ah, I see. Would you happen to know how to get rid of the "Test Mode" watermark in each corner of the desktop? Presumably by undoing those instructions? I think I tried typing "AlwaysOn" instead of "AlwaysOff" but it's still there, even after a restart.

EscondeR
13-10-08, 05:10
Yup, by undoing, BUT...

Other values of /NoExecute parameter are OptIn and Optout. Use Optin parameter or leave it AlwaysOff.

ChrisIVX
13-10-08, 14:55
Sorry but I'm not so good at this (and definitely shouldn't have been poking around), but is that
"bcdedit.exe /noexecute optin" ?

Edit: and did you by any chance mean "leave it AlwaysOn" ?

ChrisIVX
13-10-08, 15:39
Ok, so here are some results from the graphics:

At the part in Bolivia, deliberately failing the cutscene (painful to watch so many times!) after the block/catapault/gold secret:

Turning them all on one by one (without turning off the last one), I did all except for NextGen, then disabled them all, then tried NextGen on its own, and everything was fine. That is to say the level reloaded and I started at the checkpoint right before the cutscene.

Next I tried turning them all on, and the PC just switched off.

I didn't turn VSync on at all.

With regards to DEP, I just noticed the game would crash right after the intro movie and Windows Help sprang up to tell me about DEP, when I had it switched to AlwaysOn. That's never happened before. It's now set to AlwaysOff. I was wondering if there was a "return to defaults" command somewhere?

ChrisIVX
13-10-08, 16:46
Status update:

I managed to get rid of the test mode sign by typing "bcdedit /set testsigning off." Hopefully that's nothing bad.

I crashed the PC some more too. I tried two combinations, but before that, I also tried leaving only NextGen on and erratically moving the camera, running about etc to run up some heat on the CPU etc before running into the cutscene. The second time, Legend crashed to desktop and I got the following error message:

http://i38.************/10r6dk7.jpg

Maybe that's a clue, or maybe I was just abusing it too much - I dunno.

Anyway, running NextGen + reflections and water effects, then NextGen + FSAA, both crashed the PC, suggesting it's some kind of performance issue, right? Speedfan, running in the background, suggests it was nothing too temperature intensive when it happened.

EscondeR

1. Use "bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff" command w/o quotes OR bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx OptIn". First will disable DEP (recommended), second will revert to initial state.

2. Go to Control panel > System > Additional settings > Performance and set Virtual memory/swap file to be 4096Mb = Max size = Min size.

3. Keep Reflections, FSAA, VSync off.

ChrisIVX
13-10-08, 21:42
Cool, DEP's sorted, thanks.

The combination succeeded at the cutscene but the game still crashed (to desktop) at the next level, difficulty select screen.

What do you reckon's going on?

EscondeR
14-10-08, 05:36
1. Uninstall TRL completely, delete it's folder.
2. Run TRRC (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/trrc.exe) to remove the old settings.
3. Update DirectX (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c1367bc3-4676-481a-bfaa-5c15d1d7199d&DisplayLang=en).
4. Reboot your PC.
5. Reinstall TRL.
6. Install TRL patch v1.2 (http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/tr7/updates.html).
7. Run TRL with default settings.

ChrisIVX
14-10-08, 17:15
DirectX 10 won't update so far as I can tell. Is DX 10.1 out yet?
I'll get onto reinstalling.

thanks

ChrisIVX
14-10-08, 21:30
Doing all of the above passes all tests:

1. failing the first cutscene doesn't crash
2. completing the first level and saying "continue" doesn't crash
3. saying "resume" from the main menu, with a checkpoint between level 1 and 2, doesn't crash to desktop

Default options were 1024*768 resolution, shadows, full screen effects, depth of field, reflections, water effects on, the rest (including wide-screen) off.

Edit: I ran it on max settings - it still crashes. (I wondered if the DirectX might've fixed something.)

Still with max settings, I also tried turning down only the resolution (1042 x 768), to no avail (pc switched off on both "3." and also when starting a new game). I also tried 1280 x 800, the same aspect ratio as my 1680 x 1050 monitor, and it still won't even load the first level without forcing the PC. off. Does that sound like a video issue? (I have the latest drivers and had the ones before them but tried upgrading to fix this.)

It's just strange that the best results seem to be at the highest resolution.

I'm also currently playing X3 and Company of Heroes, and am not seeing any problems with them. However I did initially get the PC turning "off" the very same way with CoH until I installed RivaTuner to control the GPU fan. This doesn't seem the same though: in CoH the game had time to heat up. Here, it's triggered exactly the same way each time after less than 10 or 20 seconds from loading the game. I have monitored it with Speedfan and it doesn't go beyond 70 degC.

EscondeR
15-10-08, 06:11
You can try installing the previous version of video drivers then and wait for newer update :)

ChrisIVX

Any idea whether it's likely to be nForce or GeForce?

ChrisIVX
15-10-08, 18:22
Let me also put down these two small titbits, which may/may not be helpful:

1- Securom occasionally complains I'm using a backup CD and refuses to load the game. Usually works next time though. (It's not a backup CD, maybe just slightly scratched)

2- Noticed some graphical issues while playing. Lara's hair hovers strangely in some cutscenes; the ropes of the rope bridge at the end of level 1 are flying and not in the right place, offset to the left.

Don't worry about trying to solve them, I just thought they might be clues.

1. It's GeForce driver obviously.

2. Securom can yell on any CD/DVD-emulation software you may have (Daemon Tools, Alcohol, etc).

3. Glitches are related to graphics driver anyway.

Tried installing drivers from the CD that came with it. Still won't play. Any ideas?
