View Full Version : Wireless internet slowdown?

Lara's Backpack
24-10-08, 22:07
Hi all,
Im not quite sure what's going on, hopefully one of you smart smart people will have a clue, but, recently my wireless internet (as in next G wireless adapted plugged in via usb) has slowed right down to download speeds maxing out at 5kb/s when only last week it had speeds averaging something like 15kb/s. So naturally, Im rather annoying :p

Anyway, I was wondering, what on Earth could cause this? Ive been on the bigpond site and nothing suggests any technical difficulties, however Im concerned that perhaps something on my computer is blocking the software, or at least it partly is; one of my reasons for suggesting this is that I often get a popup message from norton saying "an attempt on your computer was recently blocked" after I connect.

Another Idea was that perhaps something was downloading updates or similiar? But I cant find what that is, ive looked at windows updates but its switched off. So Im completely clueless. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

if you are on wireless G, you should be getting connection speeds of 54Mbps on local network, and then your internet speed will depend upon the speed provided by your ISP.

what is the speed of your internet connection from your ISP?

are there any other computers on the network?

how far are you from the wireless router?

Uninstall Norton and use Zone Alarm (http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/catalog_main.jsp?c=W200025&menu=1&AID=10498755&PID=2296234) for your firewall, and use AVG (free) (http://free.avg.com/) or Kaspersky (http://usa.kaspersky.com/products_services/anti-virus.php) (paid) for your antivirus.

also post a report of ardiag.exe (http://usa.kaspersky.com/products_services/anti-virus.php) please.

if you get another one of those windows popup from your firewall, please make a screen shot or at least indicate the exact text from the warning so that we can consult on the severity of that. I am curious if it is always from the same address (an attempt at hacking, or simply another computer on the network attempting to connect to the computer and you do not have the firewall rules set to trust the network)

Also do a speed test.

spikejones

well it may end up just showing the reduced speed they are getting, but i guess it could not hurt to do that. when the test is completed, you will be presented with the results and you will be also given a link that you can post here to show the results.

I am also curious if this is your own router you are connecting to and you are not pirating a signal from someone else (which would probably explain the low speeds you indicate, as you would be a long way from the hotspot.) :mis:

no no, I don't think you understand. Its not connected to a router in the room at all, its nation wide. (Its Next G, so it works like a mobile)

i still stand by these points though... certainly the ardiag report can be helpful to see if you may have a virus affecting your speed. i am curious though if you are located in the same exact spot you were before when you had the faster speeds>?

Ill use those programs, and my computer hasnt moved an inch ;)

Its always worked whereever Ive travelled, and its always been around 150kb/s here on my desk at school, just not for the past week. Its infuriating!

EDIT: And Oh goodie, its downloading at a whole 938B/s.

spikejones
25-10-08, 00:41
has there been any construction going on around there lately? (this may impede the signal if so). I am also actually interested in that speed test report to see what the results are. I should have also asked this earlier:

what is telling you that your download speed is X amount?

Lara's Backpack
25-10-08, 00:47
google chrome whilst Im downloading AVG. Which Ill pause and Ill run the speed check...

http://www.speedtest.net/result/344481181.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

Ok wtf... my upload speed seems right, but that download speed should be much, much higher. I remember there being a thread about it in general chat ages ago... Ill try to find my own result and post it here too.

spikejones

that IS your own result ;)

okay... now onto the question of what plan are you on? I just checked the TOS which was recently changed effective October 19, 2008 (being just the other day in fact and probably when you started experiencing the issue).

it states the following in Section D on page 4.4 of the TOS (http://www.telstra.com.au/customerterms/docs/bp_part_d.pdf):

for the two highest tiers (in terms of data allowance per month) 5 GB and 10 GB, being billed at 89.95 and 129.95 monthly (respectively) that there is A) no additional rate for going over the allowance and that B) your speed will be DECREASED to approximately 64kbps.

your speed test confirms that this is the case as far as I can tell.

Note that you do not have to download 1 - 10 GB worth of images/programs in order to go over the limit. This data is actually calculated on sending and receiving of all packet flow. Simply browsing the web will incur data. You send data out and you receive data back every time you go to a web site. Being on the forums will not take long at all to rack up those type data rates, especially if you are a very active user.

My suggestion is to go with an ISP that will provide you with unlimited data flow in both directions.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/302483698.png

Thats my old test.

Im with the 3gig per month plan, getting charged 30c for every Mb I go over. However my month begins again today so I have the full 3 gig back, and last month I didnt go over anyway.

Also, when I did the speed test it placed me towards Sydney instead of Brisbane.

Is it possible that ever since connecting in Newcastle (which is an hour from Sydney) over the holidays it hasn't been connecting to Brisbane, but sydney still? Im confused as to what to do. Why is my download speed so ****?

Edit: I just got another bombardment of norton saying it was blocking attempts on my machine:

And heres the whole host of others... I wonder if the IP adress beginning with 61.xxxxx has something to do with it..:

well with wireless devices like that, it has to do with a PRL file (preferred roaming list) as to which towers it will connect to. Also, there are two different networks on that bigpond system. One is the fast (broadband) connection (next g), and the other is a slower connection (easy edge). If the place where you travelled to was on the easy edge network and you connected to IT, there may be an error where it is still wanting to connect to IT instead of the Next G network. You also indicate that it is connecting to a different city/state/locale w/e than normal. This longer distance to the tower can be affecting your speeds as well.

you haven't gone over the limit so as to be throttled down, but your speeds are running at about the speed of one which would be throttled down by their new rules.

i think that this may be an issue that needs to be sorted out with the Big Pong/ Next G tech people. but please still provide that ardiag.exe (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/ardiag.exe) report so that we can see if there are any viruses, spyware, or other processes that may be inhibiting your speeds.

something else that you may want to try though is to disconnect the device and uninstall the drivers. then reinstall them to try to reconfigure the device onto the proper towers.

(i still recommend you to get a decent ISP that doesnt limit speeds/data amounts. they are even cheaper also)

I wish I could, but Im in a boarding school for the remainder of the year, having my own external internet is strictly forbidden ;)

So I couldnt really just get a whole host of wires put in so I could connect to the internet :p This was my only other alternative.

Im downloading and running ardiag now... Thanks for your help so far, you've been great.

Copy the following text and paste it to your report AS IS!!!

double post so you notice my reply.

port 53 is a DNS request indicating that a machine is trying to send you a DNS request. (dns is the server that turns www.tombraiderforums.com into one of those numbers you see.)

what are the other ports that are being hit?

my wireless internet is acting up too and i need a little help. i have linksys and my internet was perfectly fine when i got it (that was in 2005). the wireless was fine everywhere and when i would connect from my room with my ps3 it would be about 87%, and from the other rooms it would be about 75-80%. in july this year the wireless internet got really bad. it would only be normal when i was really close to the router, and now my ps3 says 50% instead of 87%, and 30% instead of 70%-80%. is there anything i could do to fix the wireless to how it was before? :( and btw it isnt only like this for my ps3, but its like this for all the other wireless things in the house.

53197, 53192, 53180, 53184, 53178, 53175, 53172, 53171, 53163, 53155, etc, etc. Only changing the last 3 digits.
sorry i didnt get back with you earlier. i was kinda hoping EscondeR would take over for me. Had to get to bed as I needed to be able to wake up at the current time (5 am EST). I would be kinda worried about all those high number ports being hit/blocked like that, but it doesn't appear to be as though you have been being "attacked" by the same machine from the image that you posted. All the addresses are different. It makes me wonder. I just checked my log this morning and the latest blocks were from last night when i did a test of my firewall (and every thing from that server was blocked, which is good). There's been nothing new since then. I will on occassion get a stray packet hit one of my ports and get blocked/dropped, but not often.

Perhaps when eskie comes along he can look at your ardiag report and consult if there looks to be anything amiss in regards to malware.
my wireless internet is acting up too and i need a little help. i have linksys and my internet was perfectly fine when i got it (that was in 2005). the wireless was fine everywhere and when i would connect from my room with my ps3 it would be about 87%, and from the other rooms it would be about 75-80%. in july this year the wireless internet got really bad. it would only be normal when i was really close to the router, and now my ps3 says 50% instead of 87%, and 30% instead of 70%-80%. is there anything i could do to fix the wireless to how it was before? :( and btw it isnt only like this for my ps3, but its like this for all the other wireless things in the house.

do those percents indicate reception or speed?
is anything new in the house that can be causing interference? (radios, metal objects etc..) Radio reception may be going out due to natural causes though.

@ Lara's Backpack:
1. One thing that slows all workflow on your PC (including Internet connectivity) is Norton crappy resource hog.

2. Check if that cheeky git is not blocking your DNS (UDP 53 port, your ISP DNS server IP).

3. Run Autoruns (http://technet.microsoft.com/ru-ru/sysinternals/bb963902(en-us).aspx) and kill those processes:

4. It may be caused by interference OR by intrusion and wireless connection leeching. Check your encryption settings!

OK, Ive used autoruns to kill those processes, but Im unsure how to check which ports Norton is blocking?

Im not sure exactly what did, either something hit the spot or it was a combination of everything but:
