View Full Version : Sprint Jump

I remember a while back, when they first started releasing details about TRU, they mentioned that the Sprint ability is back along with the super Sprint jump.

Every video I've seen of gameplay, I'm always like well they're sprinting... do the sprint jump!! And then I tried to today in the demo... it's not there. It's just a normal jump, even while sprinting.

Seeing as this was like my favorite move ever in a TR Game, can Jay or Keir or someone give some details? Did CD cut it from the game? Was it ever even implemented? If they cut it, why?

Thanks! :wve:

I think the reason they didn't include it, is because you don't really need a run up to use the sprint, so if there was a special jump (like AOD), then you could use it on all the smalller gaps which you weren't supposed to cross easily...

I was wondering about this too. Tell me Big Lara Fan - how did you find TRU Lara's normal jumps in the demo?

Does she jump longer or the same as TRA Lara? (Can she jump a little extra by keeping the jump button pressed down in mid-air?)

Or (and I will be annoyed here...) have they changed her jump back to the pathetically minscule TRL jump?

this was the one thing that I didn't like about the demo!!

As soon as I got into an open area, I thought A: let's try out those gymnastics (which are great, btw) and B: let's try out the sprint and sprint jump!
but alas, the 'sprint jump' was just a regular one :/ you'd have thought that with the whole What Could Lara Do? thing they'd have realised that you can jump ALOT further if you take a run up (sprint)
not pleased with that

Yup tried the same thing she doesn't jump any higher. I asked Jay about this a short while ago I'll try to find the post.

Well, it's realistic to not jump higher.. in the original games, there was a high jump which none of us can make it.. that's what CD decided to make it more realistic.

They said in magazines that to reach some ledges she needed to sprint and jump. And the problem of using it all the time to make it easier is easily solved. Solved by making obstacles that make Lara hit them if sprint jump used or in a simple ledge jump. Yes simple ledge jump because many would forget or simply wouldn't use the sprint jump because there is a more simple and effective way of jumping to grab the ledge, sprint jump takes more time to do, you need to step back and jump, if it was worked this way I'm sure the problem with this would be solved.

So it's totally realistic for Lara to battle an extinct T-Rex, or fight skeleton enemies? What are CD playing at? I thought the whole point of TR was immersion, escapism, exploration and adventure in fantastic settings - not realism...

If Lara could jump further, they'd have to make the levels bigger :whi:...

Probably it has something to do with gravity, even if Lara was running faster she would still not jump any further than running at normal speed. Just because Core Design did it does not necessarily mean crystal Dynamics will include the sprint jump.

Then why do real life distance jumpers sprint before taking off? Could they reach the same distance if they jogged, then jumped?

Lara has springs for legs she could be standing still and still jump the same distance. Real life jumpers run up to get a few inches maybe a foot, Lara already jumps further than them anyway. Lara jumps the same distance in the game whether she runs or not, so sprint jump is not going to be any longer than a running jump or a standing jump.

I didn't like the sprint in Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness. I always stopped sprinting when I jumped because I didn't think you could use sprint on your jumps.

She has sprint swimming, sprint shimmying, sprinting on land...why not have a sprint jump? It'd make a lot more sense than having her magically 'make it' with a regular jump across longer distances because the game helps her along a bit - like certain parts of TRA or TRL.

This video gives the basics on long jumping. Speed/acceleration is an essential part of achieving optimal distance.

I loved doing that while I was in the water. it was so much fun haha. ;)

The miniscule Lara jump from TRL is back :jmp: Yay! I'm so excited - I hope they make Lara jump even shorter distances in the next TR game (Yes, I'm being ironic)

Maybe in a few TR games from now, she won't jump at all, she will be using a motor-powered jumping device instead of her legs.

So its not in the full game either? Why did they even mention it all those months ago then????
