.............to be able to play TRU (and the demo).

Since I have not got the slightest idea, I thought I ask you lovely people for advice what to get that is top of the range, yet compatible with my PC as it is.

Here is the ARDiag exe report from a couple of days ago. I hope it has got all the information about my specs that you need. If not, let me know and I'll post what other information is necessary.

Thank you very much.

Yup, new video board definitely... E.g. NVidia Geforce 8600GT and higher or ATI Radeon 3xxx series or higher.

Extra Gig of RAM won't be useless also :)

I do apologise for being a pain in the........erm.. neck, but I just have done a bit of research on both of your suggestions and I have to say, I am utterly confused.
There are so many different cards in both of the ranges when including your "or higher", and what the websites and reviews tell me about them, goes straight over my head. :o And I still do not know which one would have the best compatibility with my PC.
Let me rephrase my question:
If you had my PC and a budget up to 150, which graphics card would you go for?
And how do I get that "extra Gig of RAM"?

there are lots and lots of high performance cards for your budget, and the new ATI ones have more than caught up with Nvidia

Will DDR 2 be the best option for playing the newer games?

What about DDr3?I recently got a MoBo that supports only DDr3 and I don't really see any difference in performance.

And you probably won't.

Computers really only run as fast as the slowest component; you won't see any appreciable difference between DDR2 and DDR3.

I heard that ddr3 is the so called "overclocking ram" so I might look into that.

@ Gabi:
Video board: Sapphire Technology RADEON HD 3850 512MB AGP DUAL DVI DDR3 VGA TVO (http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=508W&CategorySelectedId=11137&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11137,377090000,50780000) - 93.64
Thank you, Alex. :) That's the one I will be getting, then.
RAM: Look HERE (http://www.dabs.com/productlist.aspx?&NavigationKey=11150&NavigationKey=4294957152&CategorySelectedId=11150&PageMode=1) - choose your RAM type (DDR or DDR2) and speed (PC-xxxx) :)
But I would not be myself if I did not have more questions:
I have got this motherboard. (http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=15&l3=148&model=375&modelmenu=1)
And under Memory it tells me that I have got the following:
Dual-channel memory architecture
4x184-pin DIMM sockets support ECC/non-ECC
unbuffered 400/333/266MHz DDR memory modules
Supports up to 4GB system memory
:confused:
Now forgive me for asking, but what exactly is my RAM type (DDR-wise) and what is the speed? I would think that because of the word "dual" it is a DDR2, but since I have not got a clue, I might be completly wrong.
So, which RAM upgrade should I go for (again, I would like a fairly good one)?

And one more question if I may: My PC-clock keeps losing time after the PC has been turned off. Not always, but quite frequently. After having googled about it, it seems that the battery might need replacing.
Where is that battery (somewhere inside the case or built in the motherboard)?
Is it straight forward to replace it?
Because if we have to open the case anyway, we might as well change the battery, before it gets any worse.

Thanks for all your help. :)

Hi Gabi :)

The most common type of CMOS Battery is a CR2032. The arrow below shows the location of your battery on your brand of MB. Around here you can pick these up anywhere and they're quite common.

http://i36.************/34rakk5.jpg

As far as the type of RAM goes, I usually just pop out 1 stick and look for a label on it. Just take note of how it came out. Hope that helps. :)

Yup :)

@ Gabi: Get 4 sticks of THIS (http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=30R1&CategorySelectedId=11150&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11150,4294957152,4294960195) for 21 each and you'll be equipped RAM-wise :tmb:

Thank you so much Legend Killer and Alex. :hug:
Now I am ready to get things sorted, so I will be able to play TRU when it comes out. :yah:

Btw., Knowing me I will probably be back with more questions once I have got the parts and very much hope you guys don't mind.
Thanks again. :wve:

I am all ears................. :pi:

By now you should have noticed that I have not got the faintest idea when it comes to technical stuff. :o So, what would you recommend that is compatible with my PC?

you win :)
but it can be bought cheaper
my kids pc needs a 6600gt replacement so i may go for a 3850 myself

of course it's probably a better investment to swap out the old mobo and install a 4xx series

http://www.britishspanking.com/forums/images/smilies/bump2.gif

The components to upgrade my PC have arrived today and David has tried to install them, but we are having some questions/problems. (why can't these things ever be straight forward? :rolleyes:)

A. New RAM
David has successfully put the new "sticks" in and I definitely notice an improvement in speed, but even though we put 4x 1GB in, when we have a look at "My Computer/Properties" it only shows 2 GB in total. Now we have read that depending on the specs not the full amount will be recognized, but losing half of it?
The Virtual memory is currently set to 1536MB as previously recommended for my original 2x 512 MB. Am I right in assuming that now we change it to the new recommended value of 3070MB?

B. Graphics Card
I am now the proud owner of this graphics card: Sapphire Technology RADEON HD 3850 512MB AGP DUAL DVI DDR3 VGA TVO (http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=508W&CategorySelectedId=11137&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11137,377090000,50780000)
According to the instructions it needs to get connected to the PC's power supply (the old card does not have such a connection).
The existent unused power cable in the PC (with 8 black and yellow wires) does not fit in the slot on the graphics card.
Now they do supply a cable (again with 8 black and yellow wires) which has 3 connectors (one for the card, 2 for the power), but the PC has only got one power outlet that would fit one of those connectors.
Now I very much hope that there might be an adapter or "bridge" cable available to overcome this problem. Is that the case?

3. Battery
Well, I hardly dare asking, but how on earth do we get the old battery out?
And then we have read that changing the battery will result in losing the BIOS settings. :yik:
Where and how will we get them back and will it be a straight forward job to "reset" them?

Sorry for being such trouble, but we have never done anything like it and I think it is safer to ask all these (to you probably silly) questions, rather than messing up my PC and possibly doing some damage.
Thanks for any help and advice. :)

A. You must be only running a 32-bit Operating System. That's why you are only seeing the 2gb RAM. 4GB ram requires a 64-Bit OS to effectively use it all. I know Vista 32-bit has a limit of 3.2gb RAM, I'm not sure about XP but I'd be willing to be that's the case.

B. Did you update the power supply with the rest of the upgrades? It's usually a good idea because newer cards take a lot of power.

The battery should be spring loaded in it's slot - simply press down at one edge and it should pop up. I've taken many batteries out of PC's and not once lost the BIOS; if for some strange reason it did, all you would need to would be to go into the CMOS and tell it to load defaults.

A. Actually Windows XP x32 must recognize 4Gb of RAM with 1Gb reserved it'll show 3Gb in available RAM. Run Diagnose.exe (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/diagnose.exe) and post the report again. Please also post the brand name and specs of new RAM you have.

To solve that issue go to Control panel > System > Additional properties > Boot and recovery and press Settings button, then Edit button. You'll see a Notepad window with something like:

timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=AlwaysOff {comment: AlwaysOff if you have DEP disabled, otherwise OptIn}

Edit it to be:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect [B]/3GB /NoExecute=AlwaysOff {comment: AlwaysOff if you have DEP disabled, otherwise OptIn}

Save the file and close Notepad. Reboot, now you must see 3GB available. To use all 4Gb you need Windows XP x64 version.

B. Can you post a picture of that supplementary power cord?

C. Exactly as Admles said, all you can loose normally is current time setting :)

You're on AMD platform Gabi, thank God there is no parallelism problem - use the above mentioned solution and you'll have 3Gb RAM available for apps (4 if manage to get XP x64) :)

Will do - in a bit (have to go for about half an hour). Last post updated with fotos.

^ You need to connect both of those molex 4 pin HDD power connectors: as you have only one free, here go:

A. What PSU do you have now? If it's weak (below 500W) consider getting more powerful - it'll have more free connectors and supposingly own cable for GPU power that'll fit.

B. You can find a bridge cable out there to connect the one of GPU power connectors inbetween PSU and any HDD/CD-drive :)

Gabi

A. I have a Corsair HX620W PSU (http://www.corsair.com/products/hx/default.aspx) which is only about 6 months old.
Btw., when you say GPU is that what I know as CPU?

B. :confused:
I do understand that I need a bridge cable, but what do you want me to connect with it? I thought we need a cable that connects the 8wire black and yellow cable in my PC with the graphics card.
Or are you saying that in order to free the second molex pin connector (so that I can connect the graphics card to it) I need to take off whatever is connected there at the moment (HDD/CD drive?) and find a bridge cable to reconnect it to the black and yellow one?
Actually, is the black and yellow one the PSU cable?

And TRU better be worth all this effort!!!! :mad: :p

1. CPU - Central Processing Unit
GPU - Graphics Processing Unit :)

2. You have one free molex ATM. So you connect 8-pin to GPU, one molex to free molex connector, another molex you will connect wia the bridge cable between PSU and existing drive so, that the drive remains connected to power. Look:

PSU ---cable---[PSU molex connector]> >[bridge molex A]----[bridge molex GPU connector (connected to one of GPU power molex connectors)]----[bridge molex B]> >[drive power connector]

Simple as that :)

Gabi
21-11-08, 22:27
Simple? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v506/Gabicats/Smilies/thud222.gif
Let me try again: I need a bridge cable that connects both, the drive and the (second) molex to the PSU . Right?
Starting from the graphics card:
8 pin to GPU - molex 1 (male) to molex 1 (female) - molex 2 (male) to bridge cable (female) - bridge cable to HDD/CD drive - bridge cable to PSU.
If that is not it, the I am afraid you will have to find me an image-link or draw me a picture. :o (sorry!)

Edit: next day - my brain is (hopefully) ready to process more information.
A thought that David had: could we not connect the bridge cable to the free molex connector in the PC and then both the molex connectors that are on the supplied cable (see fotos above) to the other 2 ends of the bridge cable? That way we would could leave the HDD/CD drive where it is.
What do you think?

Ok., David has just gone to get the bridge cable - we will try it later.
As for the RAM, I have tried what you said, but it still only shows 2 GB.
Here is the notepad:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Temp XP" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Where exactly do we have to add the "/3GB" bit? We have tried to put it after the "fastdetect" (as in your notepad), once with and once without the space, rebooted in both cases, but it still does not show.
And what about this:

The Virtual memory is currently set to 1536MB as previously recommended for my original 2x 512 MB. Am I right in assuming that now we change it to the new recommended value of 3070MB?

Thanks again for your advice. :hug:

1. You have 2 copies of XP installed (multi boot). By default it loads this one:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect , so I assume you're running games under it. So place the /3GB switch in that string (or in both if you want). Set it this way:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /3GB /noexecute=optin /fastdetect (leave the space after ", and after GB, not between / and 3GB).

2. Yup, set the Virtual memory to 3070Mb.

Gabi

I'll dig that more, but it may be related to you having Home version, not Pro. Consider upgrading to Pro or XP x64 then.

Gabi
23-11-08, 13:41
Thank you, Alex.
As a last resort I might consider upgrading to x64, but I'd rather avoid that hassle and expense (I have read that there might be driver and instability issues involved).
Googling around I came across the following on a tech. forum:
"The 3GB switch also requires PAE to be turned on for 32 bit windows. It's easy though.. you put both switches in the same place in your boot.ini /3GB and /PAE.
PAE enable windows to address memory beyond 2gb, and /3GB enables a single process to allocate up to 3gb instead of the normal 2gb barrier."

And David has read somewhere that
a. it might be a mobo issue and that there is a possible fix for it.
b. change settings from T1 to T2 (what and wherever that is)
http://www.webapper.net/index.cfm/2007/1/2/Asus-A8NSLI-RAM-Upgrade-Problems

To me that might well be written in ancient Chinese - in other words I hardly understand what they are talking about, but you will be able to see whether one of those is a possible solution or not.
Your thoughts?

Edit: How about updating the BIOS to the latest version? (Have not got a clue how to do it, though.)

In all honesty, that is not a probelm anymore.

I've been running x64 bit OS for a while now, on multiple machines, and not once had a driver stability issue.

1. RAM.
Gabi, you need the following:
You have four DDR slots on MoBo, placed this way (starting from CPU) - A1 B1 A2 B2. The contents of A slots must be equal, the contents of B slots must be equal too. If you have 4 equal sticks of RAM (I persume so) you can place in free order.
Then you must clear CMOS, you have a jumper near the battery - 3 pins with cap. Normally the cap is placed over pins 1 and 2, to clear CMOS you need to place the cap over pins 2 and 3 and power on the PC for the several seconds. It won't boot in this mode, but the CMOS data will be set to defaults.
Then place the cap over 1 and 2 pins and power the PC again. Enter BIOS setup. Look for DRAM Timing setting and set it to Auto (it'll be in Advanced BIOS Settings section most likely, in RAM/DRAM/memory subsection). Save changes and exit BIOS setup. On reboot Windows must recognize the remaining RAM.

2. Updating BIOS can be complicated. You will need a live help of a technician there anyway. Caution! Now power faults must occur during BIOS update not to damage your MoBo.

Guess who just had a peek at the demo? :jmp:
The graphics are unbelievable!
Yes, you guessed right, I have got my new graphics card. In the end we went for the Radeon HD 4670, and compared to what I have experienced with my previous one, this is almost breathtaking.
Thank you all, especially Alex, for your help. :hug:
