A massive attack of a new computer virus was reported yesterday by VP Gene Hack of Chicanery Software Inc. One of the computer-business's largest companies.
One single employee had used the internet rather than a store in order to get a hold of his "favourite song", which led to the crash of the company's entire computer system, also known as the Master Mind. Security was turned off, automatic locks were disabled and nearly all, including important, documents have also been erased from from the Master Mind's memory.

Apparently, the new virus is designed to attach itself specifically to .mp3-files, now causing an uneasy feeling in downloader's guts. Once a file has been infected, it will lay dormant for one week on the harddrive before any virus-scanning software will be able to pick up on it. During that week, the virus spreads throughout the computer, infecting every other file available. Once the initial week has passed, the virus starts it's dirty deed. By then, most likely every single file on the computer will have gotten infected and be beyond repair.

This means that any and all files that has been burned onto a cd during the initial week will carry the virus and reinfect the computer every time it is used on the machine.

The only way of getting rid of it is to reinstall whatever operative system you have on your computer.

It goes without saying that due to the P2P based internet downloading services are alarmed by this news, as files are continuously being shared around the clock. There is no telling as of how many computers may already be infected and spreading it onwards.
"This could be the beginning of the end computer-wise", said a stressed Gene Hack to the Global Computer just hours ago.

This thing with the viruses is really getting out of hand...

I happen to frequent a few computer security forums, and was astonished to see how many people get lured into downloading MP3s from a number of legit-looking sites, on condition that they also install a "plugin", in order to supposedly verify whether the downloaded MP3s are "legal" or not.

Well, this "plugin" is in fact an advertising trojan whose behaviour much resembles what is described in the above article. Even if you manage to catch it before it totally wrecks your system, removal is quite difficult and may also corrupt the registry if done incorrectly.

In any case, I never really understood in what way downloading music through a P2P application is "free" or "cheaper" compared to buying a CD. I don't see any money saving in the long hours of waiting in queue and the cost of staying online all this time, while waiting for 100MB+ files to download.

The only reason I'd find downloading music from the 'net worthwhile is when rare and perhaps obsolete music pieces are concerned, but these cases are too random to actually make up for the trouble.

Just my (rather talkative) 2c. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Oh Nat! You got me. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/redface.gif

(But you know what they say - a sin confessed is half forgiven. )

That was pretty believable, though - especially if you've seen worse things than that actually happening to people's PCs and having to help them sort them out. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Take care,

That's about as good as the one they had on the news this morning. They were talking 'bout moving the end of the Big Mac (Mackinaw Bridge) once a week. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/clown.gif
