It took about 18 hours (including walk-in) and afterwards, I have never been as exhausted in all my life!!

WOW! did you climb to the top? I'd love to try that!

RobBo

When you're actually climbing it is steep but it's like a massive rock staircase. This closer view gives you an idea of the mountain's massive Hornli Ridge....one of the routes up!

Here's another view of the same ridge, from "Speedwell Valley" near Zermutt. This is the classic Matterhorn pose! http://www.peakware.com/encyclopedia/peaks/photos/images/Matterhorn12.jpg

I had to climb 3 mountains a day on my D of E, and they weren't as steep as that! You should be VERY proud of yourself! Well done! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/hug.gif

I think you should brag about something as awesome as that. :D Good going, Robbo. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif Did you have to do much training before the climb?
Give us details...how high, how many days, how many drinks in celebration afterwards? http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/mischievous.gif

Yes, about a year's training, mostly stamina building but also physical training.

Beer consumption featured in the training as it contains the right carbohydrates for mountain climbing.

Actually I just made that last bit up but I have never met a teetotal mountaineer so.......there must be something in it! ;)

RobBo

Phi Phi, the permit fee is just to climb the moutain, your other expenses are extra.

Phi Phi
02-04-04, 00:39
What would your typical costs be for such a climb? I'm assuming you're lot allowed to climb alone? Like the underwater "buddy" diving protocol?

RobBo
02-04-04, 00:47
Depends. Yes you can (and many do ) climb alone. Everest is not a technically difficult mountain to climb. The danger is altitude sickness.

You could join an organised expedition...this would cost you anything between 750 and 8,000 on top of your permit.

There is a vast array of choice.....and sadly, if you have the money...absolutely no experience is neccessary.

The permit seems an excessive figure. Where does the money go?

Isn't Everest the most dangerous mountain to climb also? I read that a lot of people die trying to make it.

Draco

Kilimanjaro is dangerous, Everest is pie...
