View Full Version : Would you like to see an urban level in the next TR ?

TRU was nearly the best TR for me If it had certain little different things such as a longer length, better plot, more cinematics etc, however , CD has granted my biggest wish which was to make an underwater level, and I thank them so much for this, though the underwater exploration phase was a little short (well, for me :o) .

Getting into the theme, we all know that there was no urban level in TRU, we had great locations : sea, jungle, temples, forests, ship, Underworld etc...But something important missed there, I felt that an urban level was very necessary especially that we have always had them in almost each TR game. So the question is obviously in the title . Would you like to see an urban/City level in the next TR ? And also, are there any other locations you'd like to see in future TR(s) apart from the Manor ? E.g : desert, island, your own imaginative location ,etc... :)

I would love one actually, but I want a serious urban level with everything functioning and climbable. Japan in Legend back in the day was supposed to be like that but you can see where that went.

Hmmm as long as it is only one urban level then yes... as for other places I would love to see a level set in South Africa or maybe Australia, somewhere new that we haven't seen before in a TR game :)

i'd love one...

but i think it would only work if it was more 'open' than the usual Tomb Raider games...

sort of like having multiple paths from point A to point B... using rooftops, flag poles, gargoyles, swing rope... things like that...

could be really awesome if done right

Yes im totally for Urban levels in TR. The Thing is they can look just as gorgeous as any tomb, however the level design would be very difficult. Japan in legend looked like it would have been a very good urban level but eh too bad it didnt turn out so well. As far as the amount of urban levels in contrast with the tomb/ruin levels, i think for every 6 tomb levels there should be 2 urban levels.

I've never had a problem with urban levels as long as they are 1) minimal and 2) address the storyline. Venice in TR2 and Japan in Legend are good examples of this.

I don't think it's necessary, though, either. I really don't see how Underworld would have benefited from an urban level since Lara already knew enough about her locations and didn't need any sort of outside artifact, like the Excalibur pieces in Legend.

Only if Lara goes to a slum. I'm sick of the high societal city building locations. Take Lara to The Bronx. New York is one of the oldest cities around. Surely there are ancient things to uncover. I think it would be cool to see something totally different. It should be minimal though. But I'd like to see how Laras attitude would change or fit in in the hood. maybe zip could give her a tour. Lara thinks she's tough. Lets see how she'd survive in a tough neighborhood.

And maybe she could meet a well known hooker or a night club owner.

I guess that's a good idea. They did it with the mansion.:o

You may be getting confused. Pierre works at the Cafe Metro. Louis Bouchard is the night club owner.
But yeah, discovered a while ago and I was like "Hey, wait a minute".
That's why Pierre from TR1 is usually referred to as Pierre DuPont. Couldn't they have just thought of another French male's name?Maybe it was a homage or something.

Really. I havent played theat gae in a while so details are vague. Both brnard and Pierre had you go to the club so i assumed they co-owned it. But now that i think back on it....i think that Pierre may have been the DJ or somethijn id. What was Pierre and Bernard's relationship to the club?

Not " an ". I'd like to see at least 2. I like urban levels. Well, as long as they aren't linear. And by the way, I hope they will actually create people, walking, and doing some actions, if Lara ever goes in a street (not a ghetto). Grand Theft Auto would inspire me, if I'd be a level designer.

I love urban levels! They're actually my favorite type of level in Tomb Raider, crazy as it sounds. But they're like the icing on the cake, so not too many. There should be more than zero urban levels, but shouldn't make up half the game. One third is pushing it. The variety they provide makes the games even more interesting, imo.

Deflinitely. It will be a nice and crisp change of pace from all the claustrophobic and dusty tombs.

Medieval city? OK :)

An urban level would be awesome... A huge Level where you can explore everything kinda like GTA... I think New York City or Tokyo would be the best choices... It's a shame that CD didn't make the Legend Tokyo Level like it was supposed to be...

I don't think CD would ever make such a non-linear level.

Nope :wve: Just replayed Japan, hated it. It would have to be like VCI levels for me to like it.

If they want variety out of tombs..Ships (sunken as well!) Temples, Jungles ect will do. No cities :D

I want Lara to be in The Bronx when a secret group of vigilantes lets all the animals out of the Bronx Zoo. Imagine getting to kill lions and tigers and bears amongst mass chaos and people screaming through the streets while Lions are eating away at innocent civilians. Crocodiles, elephants trampling cars, wolves, all in one area. It would be pandemonium.

30-11-08, 22:07
It would be nice, but restricted to 2 levels, maybe even 1 :p However, I wouldn't like a futuristic city, a medieval one, as someone already said, would be better.

sure, raiding a shopping mall or a park, or office. with lots of ledge climbing, ledge jumping, pole swinging, in the mall!! With extra pole
swinging and ledge climbing!! Awesome.

No way, this is Tomb Raider! Not URBAN Raider!!!

URBAN = Ugly Retarded Buildings and Newbies ;)

I'm strict with one thing not suiting a game, which'll turn it around! :(

urban cemetery leading to a tomb = ok

30-11-08, 22:26
Definitely no. I didn't play Underworld yet, but the demo was wonderful; I played Anniversary and Legend and they were great. The only "urban" level Crystal gave us untill now is Japan and I didn't like it.
I just can't see Lara in that kind of places, I like Tomb Raider because it deals about tombs, temples, ruins and natural environments. Urban levels are a big let down for me, they do not inspire the right mood of a TR level.
The one and only "urban" level I liked was the desert Aldwich station...

YES. Whether it's Japan-urban or Parisian-urban or even a medieval place. TR2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 had urban levels. It was a good idea, as long as they're not too many, it fits perfectly. I say bring them back.

silver_wolf
30-11-08, 22:34
Yes, but it should either be a break in level or it should descend into a tomb, like the Louvre in AoD.

Moon-Safari
30-11-08, 23:18
It should set a clear tone, just like the tombs do. Atmosphere is possible anywhere, you just have to commit to it. I think an urban level with better graphics than Underworld's, could really look and feel quite unique. Would the Vatican be concidered an urban level?

silver_wolf
30-11-08, 23:21
Yes! I sooooo want to go to the Vatican, ever since that was rumored!

Could be. I mean If Lara crosses the streets or simply jumps over the roofs (like in TR3 and TRL Japan) it would definitely be an urban level, whereas if she settle for exploring the Vatican museum I don't think we may take it as a City location. :)

I need an urban level in a TR to break up the tombs :D

Agreed. :)

There needs to be some sort of "break" in-between all the tombs. Too much will drive me mad.

Yes! I love urban settings. Cities like London, Rome, Athens, Paris as well as provincial ones, like islands or villages. We've seen such settings as main environments in several amazing custom levels, which is a proof that they work greatly with TR.

Yes, I want a urban level too, in the same way like TR5.. I love that level!

TombRaiderCool
01-12-08, 17:48
Yes I would! I loved most of the urban levels from previous Tomb Raider games, especially Japan and London! I also think a medieval village or castle similar to the Vault of Trophies or a small island location like the South Pacific levels would be a pleasant touch! :)
There were quite a lot of urban levels from the older games and most of them seemed to work well, I don't why there shouldn't be any now. I am happy for them to return, just as long as there are too many of them, perhaps 1 or 2 of them. :)

Yes, an urban location is always a nice change from the tombs and stuff.

No more parties though. Surely there are other urban scenarios that don't require Lara in a cocktail dress.

It could link in really well with the free roaming. Have a collonial and/or native town in/by the rainforest, asking for directions and advice etc. Maybe slums, but I raelly like the variety added by the modern environments. EG cities. Her job is about linking the ancient with the modern.
