View Full Version : Myths and legends CD can base the new TR on

NightWish

Here is a thread where we suggest and discuss myths and legends from the whole world! Ones that are interesting enough and not used yet so that we inspire Crystal to base their new TR on one of them! :)

Let the brainstorming begin! :D

Well I have mine on another thread... and theres other threads for new TR9 storylines. And TR9 suggestions... just sayin :whi:
but I'm fascinated by the archeological myths about the beginning of mankind. Everything from genesis to legends from the Yoruba of Nigeria...

The Amazon's

In 1541, small ships are sailing in the river 'Mar Dulce', and in the night they were atacked by Indias (The Amazon's). They are only women, high, with a braid (:D), and armed with arrows. They destroy almost the entire fleet of ship's.

When this fleet arrived in a 'tribo' or village of friendly ''indios'', they learn the rumour about the ''Amazon's''. They are lonely women and had an immense empire. When the time came for procreation, the amazon's permitted the entry of men in they village. The amazon's who stay pregnant will be in resting, the other's will protect the village. And the men only go to the empire to make babies. If the babie was a man, he was sending to his father, if a woman, she stay with the amazon's and the father will win a precious artifact, 'The Esmeralda Verde'. And this is the artifact that Lara will seek.

Like it?

Do they need to? they could just make up an artifact but the locations and tombs have a contextual background, like st francis folly in anniversary for example, i'm kinda bored of the 'monomyth now proved false' idea. I was kinda hoping to get to go to a proper xibalba or niflheim, not just a small room 'which the legends were based around'.
let me guess, the yetis in modern culture are actually just stray thralls coming through the dais into nepal .

Aboriginal mythology: Lara finds out the Aboriginals travelled all around the world by finding a Aboriginal ruin hidden in the outback. All the cities and placees they built have an honor of a visit from Lara:)

She said 'these yeti creatures' - although thinking about it, how one came to be in Jan Mayen is confusing. I guess they may not be yetis, but that's the impression I got.

Like it?THAT WOULD BE SO AWESOME! I would love a jungle level ala TR3 with amazons! :jmp:

I would love if the next game centers around King Solomon's temple myth. Its said its in the holy lands and there is a legend that the Knights Templar dug there and found some of his fabled treasures! Some believe it was the holy Grail, some the Philosopher stone! I think this legend would be able to combine both Medieval surroundings and way more ancient ones!

I think what CD has done, from an archaeological perspective, is excellent. It makes sense for a civilisation to venerate their various mythologies, and honour them in some way or other. I would love to see a level based in Egypt surronding the Duat, and the hall of judgement! That could be made into a really complex puzzle!

Already posted this elsewhere, but I think it could make a very good game and story:
Hebrew "Even ha-Shetiyah." The Even is the capstone of creation. Under this stone God trapped the floodwaters of the abyss (Isa. 2:2), the source of all the world's water. All the world's winds also originate from there (Otzer Maasot, p. 121). This stone sits under the Temple Mount (http://www.pantheon.org/articles/t/temple_mount.html). The stone is actually a piece of God's Throne of Glory (Zohar) and inscribed with the Tetragrammaton (http://www.pantheon.org/articles/t/tetragrammaton.html). A chunk of the Stone was used by God to make the two tablets of the Ten Commandments (http://www.pantheon.org/articles/t/ten_commandments.html). God moved this stone only once, to unleash the Flood of Noah (http://www.pantheon.org/articles/n/noah.html)'s day. When King David (http://www.pantheon.org/articles/d/david.html) tried to move the stone into the Holy of Holies, chaos was unleashed and it was only by using the theurgic power of reciting the Psalms that he was able to drive the waters of the abyss back to their proper place (Suk. 49a; 53a). Other traditions claim the rock levitates in a cave beneath the Temple Mount and when it finally falls the coming of the Messiah is imminent.
Basically the stone would be like a dooms day artifact, locked in a vault beneath the Temple Mount. Lara would have to travel the world to find the scattered pieces of a key to open the vault, after sneaking into and under the temple in an urban level ala Louvre in AoD, then go through the ancient vault full of traps.

We've had enough of Egypt in three games I think. :)

As for cultures:
1. Native American (North America)
2. Aboriginal Australian
3. Mesopotamian
4. Aboriginal Japanese (such as the sword Kusanagi, which the god Susa-no-o withdrew from a monstrous creature's stomach after retrieving it, or the magatama relics, PLENTY of unexplored culture there, and far away from Thailand so far as geography and culture, so no repititive culture as well)
5. African (I'm talking Ethiopian, Somalian, or something from the deepest unexplored parts of Africa, nothing like what we saw in Legend, more like plains and southern Africa)

That's all I have for now :)

There is a germanic myth called the nibelung saga
It's about kings, dragons, immortality, magic, betrayal and a huge treasure of gold lost in the german river Rhein.
Locations would be around netherlands,germany,iceland

Hm, I wouldn't mind Lara looking for Ambrosia, the food of the gods which, if a mortal ate it, could turn that mortal into a god him or herself. Artifacts needed to find the Ambrosia could have been spread all over the Mediterranean, Middle East, Britain, even Africa by the Romans, Greeks, Persians, Egyptians, you name it.

Or maybe finding Ambrosia could be just one important step on the path to finding an even greater artifact...

No, I dont mean to make Lara immortal, it was just a great ending of the comix that felt both complete and both as if Lara's adventures will go on. I mean just exploring that 'myth' would be nice and would give more interesting locations!

how about some religious artefacts?? like opening the gates to heaven, like lara traveling to Rome, Middle East and Israel to find some artefacts like:

The Muslim Crescent.
The Quraan
The Cross
The Bible
The Star Of David
The Torah
Maps to each location.

So how about it? Lara Uncovering Temples beneath Notre Dam, The Mosque in Saudi Arabia and a place to worship in Israel. But these are just options What i really want Lara to go ahead and find is Babylon she would travel to Iraq or Iran! Or maybe even El-Dorado!! Thats never been done before!! She could travel to Spain and Mexico Or Peru Or Brazil.

Right. So using this fictional period as a basis, this would be about the Three Kingdoms Period, or 200 BCE.

When you said 'Dynasty Period' I thought you were talking about Imperial China, which was around for over two millenia. You can see why I was a bit confused, because Lara can't reasonably look at artefacts and locations from two thousand years of history all in one go, I don't think.

If it werent for the fact that Greece has been in two games I would say great idea. But..even though it was in two games, it was basically the same thing. So perhaps a Greece level would be nice, perhaps the island of Santorini, or better, Laura could explore the Minoan society, one of the most ancient of known civilizations (but then its sometimes thought to be Atlantis and goodness knows we've had enough of that).

I'd like to see her explore Pompei a bit. Having been there, I know it'd be an awesome place to explore. Plus Roman mythology has been relatively untouched in the series.

Tomb Raider has never touched on ancient Babylon, the summerians or other Near Eastern cultures. It would be great if ancient Mesopotamia was included in the next TR.

Polynesia, Easter island, even australia! Maybe dig a bit deeper into African mythology, focus on the congo!

I would also love to return to chinese Mythology, I loved the temple of Xian in TR2.

Overall I want locations and mythologies that haven't been touches upon, or are not widely known!

Although I love south america, for the past 3 TR's we have been to that location. I think it would be sensible if the next TR departed from Mesoamerica.

To be frank I was a little dissapointed when in TR1 Atlantis didnt stick completely to the myth and it wasnt lost beneath the waves. There could have been some incredible underwater levels! I thought anniversary was going to change that but nooo... I agree that it would have been interesting to have teh original Atlantis myth explored... but it would be way too confusing if Lara found 2 Atlantises! :vlol:

I am currently reading clthic muythilogy and there are some very interesting myths that still havent been explored by Lara! Well, they've established that the ancient cultures were in fact inspired by this pre-ancient civilisation baring striking resemblance to Norse legends. So one could assume that the Viking thread seems to be the 'purest' of all ancient cultures; or perhaps there is yet another layer beneath the Norse Underworld.
Either way, I'd love to see Zoroastrian myths (though similarities may be drawn, as a result, with Prince of Persia)!

I would love that back. feeling that Lara (the player) actually influences on the GODS and their devine...business :D it really felt epic. WHile TRU didnt feel as epic as they described it... Yeah, I get what you mean. I'd have prefered it if we'd seen some of Jormangandr's power perhaps? It could've flexed its muscles a bit, and we could've seen the effects on a global scale through news broadcasts and the like - further enchancing our predicament as Lara.
With the new branch Tomb Raider is taking though, it seems that there are no Gods and Goddesses - not as we know them. Their stories are influenced by this ancient civilisation - they are constructs of a people who experienced the powers of the ancient race.

I would really like:

South America/Amazon/Brazil (no I am not from Brazil :p)

- traps made by the natives, some don't work, some do........:D
- huge Anacondas to fight, but they don't always attack you, like the sharks in TRU
- traveling along the Amazon river on a raft or something (maybe with someone, or not :p)

India
- I know it has already been done but it's just so awesome!

Middle East (but not to much into politics or religion, cause they won't do that anyway :o)
- something with ancient Persian artifacts/stories and such

Greece
- Greek mythology is awesome, can't get enough of it. There is so much to choose from, like the Odyssee, Ilias, Herakles, you name it :D

Egypt with a branch off into the "stargate" theory would be cool.

YES! And do you guys know abuot the small ducks in teh great pyramid? that lead to 2 thin walls blocking it? No one knows whats in the room there because teh ducks are too small for a person to get there. SOme things the actual mummy of the pharaoh is there with his fabed tresures. It would be interesting Lar ato explore that somehow and then the plot thikens when she finds something unexpected there!

BTW those 3 ducts lead to outside teh pyramid ,looking towards the stars of tjheir main gods - I think it was Osiris and Isis (not sure about isis) thats how I thought of that^
