View Full Version : Would somebody recommend a PS2 game for me?

I'm kind of at a standstill here, because I don't know what game to by next for the PS2. So I thought I would turn to the good members of this forum and ask if you could suggest a PS2 game (or two or three) for me. To help you out, I'll list the games that I have, and what I like and dislike about them:

1) Dead to Rights: good balance of shooting/combat, which I haven't really experienced in a game before; on the other hand, the character's lack of variation in movement (walk or run was pretty much it) was annoying;

2) GUN: a great fun western with cool gameplay and the first "sandbox" type game I've played, good control over your character; nothing really bad to say about it (I've played it so many times), except that it's too short;

3) Hitman: Silent Assassin, Contracts and Blood Money: great series with a variety of ways to complete each mission; again, nothing really bad to say about them;

4) Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction: another "sandbox" type game with vehicles and helicopters (so much fun flying around in them); on the other hand, a ridiculous numbers of enemies (at times) and the game became repetitive;

5) Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time: fun game and the first game I played without any shooting in it; however, it also became a bit repetitive;

6) Red Dead Revolver: another cool western with great atmosphere; however, very linear and very difficult, even on the easiest level;

7) Tomb Raider: Anniversary and Legend: what can I say? the first games I played involving "puzzle-solving" and climbing - what a blast;

8) Sniper Elite: probably some of the coolest gameplay; however, very difficult, even on the easiest level;

9) SOCOM: I, II and III: the first games I bought, which impressed me with the way you required a strategy to complete each mission - "running and gunning" won't get you very far; on the other hand, really poor AI.

If anyone is familiar with these games, maybe they could also recommend another one for me. I think it is evident from my list that I like third-person shooters, but I'll let you know (if that helps) that I like a game where you can alternative between third-person and first-person (e.g. Hitman and Socom) or some variation thereof (e.g. GUN and Red Dead Revolver). I also like games where you have a lot of control over your character's movements (e.g. prone, crouch, walk, run, sprint, etc.)

One game I was stoked to play was God of War, but, after buying and returning three copies, Tombreaper here informed me that my PS2 version can't play dual-layered discs. So, as much as I would love to play God of War, that is not an option.

And, once I get a PS3, I know what I will buy: Assassin's Creed, Uncharted and Tomb Raider: Underworld to start with (maybe Kane & Lynch, but I've heard mixed reviews about it). So, until then, any ideas?

Oh, and I wouldn't mind trying something scary.

Black certainly looked good, but I thought its was strictly first-person, which makes me dizzy (whereas the ability to alternate between first-person and third-person is cool because sometimes first-person is needed)

Silent Hill I've heard good things about, but isn't it one of the most terrifying games out there? I'll need to have my hand held. Anyway, any info as to the game itself (i.e. third-person, shooter, combat, special moves, etc.) would be cool.

And, are any of the other games you mentioned third-person or are they all FPS? Thanks.

Can't go wrong with a Silent Hill game. I'd even say SH4:The Room is worth a punt.

Other scary games:

Fatal Frame/Project Zero
Fatal Frame/Project Zero II: Crimson Butterfly
Fatal Frame/Project Zero III: The Tormented
Resident Evil - Code Veronica: X
Resident Evil 4
Demento/Haunting Ground

I have no idea about what FPSs to suggest, I don't like the genre.

combat is easy to get used to in all of them, the bottom few have your typical army moves :D

I think I'll hit the ebGames by my house tomorrow and check out one of the games in the Silent Hill series. I'll probably crap my pants, though.

And, yeah, I don't play games that are strictly first-person, and, only play third-person shooters, but I like games that allow you to alternative between two when you want to. If I had to choose, I would obviously play a third-person game.

P.S. Sorry for the double post, but I don't know how to quote two or more posts in one reply.

How about Project Eden? It's an excellent PS2 action-adventure game with plenty of puzzle and shooting elements. It can be played entirely in third-person or first-person, and you've got plenty of control over your characters (you can crouch, walk, jog, run, etc). Best of all, it can be played with up to (or against) 3 friends. :tmb:

You might also want to try out Second Sight. It's pretty similar to Project Eden, except there's no multiplayer or puzzle elements. Again, it can be played in both third-person or first-person, and if you ask me it's got a "scary" edge to it.

A few tactical and fps shooters I can recommend if you like them.

Ghost Recon Jungle Storm - You get 6 members, can mid mission choose which soldier you will use for tactical advantage. Has also got Island Thunder missions.

Rainbow Six 3 - Very tough game, you run a unit solving terrorist problems.

Black - Another good FPS. Can only carry two weapons which sucks but missions are of moderately hard difficulty.

Spider-Man 2 is really good, got an insane feeling of freedom.
Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith, kinda repetitive and short but good
Tekken 5 is great!
and James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing, the best 007 game ever!

God of War (all of them!)

:D

Oh, what a surprise :p

If you want to get something akin to a spiritual experience then play

Shadows of Colossus

Seriously, all gamers should play this game at least once in their life.

Because this game is just AWESOME... :D :tmb:

Star Wars Battlefront; the first instalment, not the sequel.

Gamespot Review (http://uk.gamespot.com/ps2/action/starwarsbattlefront/review.html)

You can play from every perspective, from every angle, as every character, in every scenario.

Once you understand the game mechanics you'll be hooked; I remember being a little underwhelmed at first.

What I enjoyed is the open-ended nature of each battle.

You can experiment with a near infinite number of different tactics to win through.

That's where the sequel also fell down... it ran on rails.

If you're tempted by a Grand Theft Auto title, I strongly recommend you go with Grand Theft Auto III.

Forget San Andreas; it's too slow to start. Don't ask me about Vice City; I've never played it.
