I have a question about Spanish, I was always taught that you are supposed to say menos to tell any time after 30 minutes after but that always makes me tell time slower because I have to do the math, so is it correct to just say for example: Son las nueve y cuarenta instead of Son las diez menos veinte. I know subtracting 20 minutes isn't hard but I like to be able to say it faster and not have to think about it.

You can use both ways.
I guess it's by regions, for example in Mexico we use the first 'system' ("son las nueve cuarenta", usually without the "y" lol).

Ambas formas están bien. Sólo que es más usual utilizar "menos" cuando ya pasaron los 30 minutos de la hora. Hoy por ejemplo volvía de lo de una amiga a las 6.50 a.m. y un chico me preguntó la hora...yo no atiné a decirle "son las siete menos diez", le dije "son las seis y cincuenta" :p

En otras palabras, es totalmente válido de cualquier forma. Pero si te están evaluando en un examen sobre español o algo así, utilizá la forma que te enseñaron, claro :D
