I've found sketching a few ideas for my level is helping me out quite a bit. What helps all of you come up with your room designs etc?

I tried that once but it looked like crap. Because sometimes you need to connect different rooms. And it would look like craps to have loads of rooms over and under each other on a paper. :p

Anyway. I come up with level design from my brain. :p
And some inspiration from the TR games and other TRLE levels. :D

Well, there was one occasion on which I did actually made a blueprint for a part of a level, have a guess what it is if you want:

But that was only because the layout was easy when compared to the way I usually build, and then of course I had to follow a preconceived idea, which I don't usually do either.

Otherwise I don't think sketching levels out on paper would help me very much in thinking 3D, and if I drew up a plan, I'd depart from it rather sooner than later anyway. :)

Looks like Lara's front garden to me. *wins e-cookie*

I tried sketching out a level design once, I didn't get anywhere at all with it. I tend to prefer building directly from my imagination, and then changing things along the way as I see fit.

The only time I'll ever write or draw anything for a level, is when the thing in question is related to or about the storyline. ;)

I knew it was easy. So easy in fact that I doubt whether it's worth an e-cookie...oh well, here, have one. :)

I often make maps like that, especially when I'm trying to figure out how to build something more complicated like a sort of roomrelated puzzle, like the waterwheel setup in the Monastery level of HM.
I also make simple drawings of objects, but that's just a way of remembering what sort of objects I had in mind at some point.

But most of the building takes place whithin the editor and the rooms take shape while building, following the ideas I have in my head. :D

I happen to have fabulous ideas sometimes when I'm off the editor so I just try to draw them down on paper but the final result in the LE is far away from what I drew for I mixed it with my atm imagination :)

I get ideas from random things, usually other tomb raider games I will take the idea of how they worked lara through thye environment and then take that and implement it someway into my level.....or I think of it in the tub;)
