Sony Corp. and RealD this week demonstrated three-dimensional game titles for the Playstation 3 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, NV.
The concept presentation involved the use of RealD eyewear and a Sony Bravia HDTV set that produced an effective three-dimensional layer over titles like MotorStorm: Pacific Rift (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-98155-MotorStorm-Pacific-Rift/dp/B0016GABR4?&camp=211189&linkCode=wsw&tag=httpwwwpuncco-20&creative=373489&link_code=as3) and Wipeout HD.

How do you feel about it? How would it work? Special TV needed or just glasses? Expected this year?
first i've heard of this tech so i don't know what's going on.
given the kind of person i am, i'd probably feel a right moron wearing some eye piece to play games :vlol: i'm not knocking it as a concept though, it's just not the kind of thing i'd buy :D

If the glasses were comfy, and the concept actually worked, would i wear them? Too right i would!

well i guess it's the sign of the times, it was only a matter of time before a console would attempt such a thing, still not for me though.
i agree it needs to be comfy for the user and also reasonably priced. :D

Hmm fair enough, i don't know how you can say 3D gaming is not for you, but OK! I agree, it needs to be fair price.
I remember watching this ages ago

I wonder if the PS4 will be "out of box" with this technology? And if Sony will 'persuade' developers to use it from day one? And have free glasses in the box? :D
But as for the subject, yeah, I'd wea glasses if it gave me a better experience and worked effectively. I tried watching Journey to the Centre of the Earth in 3D but the glasses didn't seem to work well from the angle, the effect worked but the colours were that red and blue colour from the glasses :(.

i mean 3d gaming as in giving the impression stuff is popping out the tv :vlol: plus such a device would need extensive testing, effecte of prolonged use that kinda thing,
again i'm not knocking the concept, nor would i frown upon technological advancements :D
i hope they find some way so that you won't need red and blue glasses cos they're generally the only thing used for home use of 3D.
I hope if there are glasses they're like the polarized ones in the cinema's :)

Is that the only thing that makes them 3D; that they're polarized?

Yeah, basically each lens filters the light differently so that each eye is seeing a slightly different image. The TV projects the two different images, one for each eye. The slight difference gives the illusion that the eyes are focusing on something in the distance. (Wearing polarized glasses and looking at a normal game wouldn't work -- the TV has to show the two different images.)
Anyhow, this sounds very interesting. I'd love to see where this goes :D

I don't care much for visuals in gaming, so I don't really care where this goes.

We all know this affect is rubbish. There credibility would become a laughing stock if they hit us with red and blue glasses lol

So, wait, if they showed two different images on a TV, like you described, and we just wore a regular pair of polarized glasses, would we see a 3D image?
(I'm always wearing sunnies, and I never buy a pair that aren't polarized, so it would be more comfortable to wear my pair rather than a clunky cinema pair. lol)

ID like this, i really love those 3D Gimmicks. Friday the 13th 3D, Jaws 3D, Amityville 3D, It Came From Outerspace 3D... i just love it. Only sucks you have to wear glasses. Just create a tv that can show 3D without those stupid glasses:mad:

I can't wait. Imagine Tomb Raider in 3D. Lara Croft will look like a real woman by then.

Basically light waves have orientations. For simplicity, let's say that some are left-right and others are up-down. The TV would project one image with purely left-right light waves and the other image with purely up-down light waves. Then the polarized glasses will be designed so that the left lens only lets you see left-right waves and the right lens only lets you see up-down waves. That way each eye sees a different image despite both looking at the same TV.
At least that's my simplistic understanding of it. I hope I made some sense :o
