View Full Version : Can You Tell the Difference?

Below is a set of pictures of what appears to be the same locations twice. But, one of them is actually a representation in a video game. Can you tell which is real and which is not? Highlight here for answer: right is video game, left is real.I must say, this really is incredible. Now if only we could get a PC or console that can run these graphics that doesn't belong to NASA.

I agree :pi:

the images are indeed very realistic looking - far superior to video game graphics I might say, but still lack in minor details. One of the things that tipped me off in even the first image was the shadows, as well as having an overall more boxy look than the real counterparts. But very detailed nonetheless.

You must have a bloody good PS2 then :p

That is the graphics on High, DX9 - the anti-aliasing on the trees isn't that great, but that is 16xQ AA...

Not really? Those screenshots were taken at sun-down, so it would be darker. And they are screenshots after all, compressed and all...

The game forms a much better image in game, stills do not do it justice. I can play the game on all high settings, but I don't have Vista so I can't run it on ultra high :(.

I just reloaded my last save, here I am, but I have not finished the game yet - been preoccupied by Fallout :ton:.

It looks amazing, but things are too crisp and rounded off that they don't quite look as realistic as, well, real life :).

ditto.

i hope graphics don't get TOO realistic in games... i don't ever wanna feel like i'm playing someone who's in a tv show or movie, i'm content with graphics straddling the fence.

even though it's rather obvious which is which (it's the lighting, the natural lighting is evident) the graphics are phenominal!

They're not that good.

I agree, the Crysis graphics don't actually wow me. The physics, on the other hand...

brightness and contrast are two totally different things though. for example, in the following image you posted:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/jamieoliver22/mountain.jpg

the whole shot looks plain washed out - with a gray tint to it all. mind you its not an even tint either. almost as if it was a fog over the mountain (which isnt really present in the other images). also at the bottom, next to the gun/hand - you can barely tell where the water ends and the sand begins. I'm just not buying realism there. I'll just show you an example of what I mean though with a before/after shot of one image where the only thing I will adjust is the contrast.

First the original:
http://i43.************/2s0bgoj.gif

Now the tweaked image, with only the contrast turned down (to -50 with GIMP).
http://i43.************/kd05d5.gif

Now a second tweaked image, with only the brightness turned down. (to -50 with GIMP)
http://i43.************/2afls0m.gif

Notice the difference between brightness and contrast now? So to say the image was taken at dusk doesn't convince me that it should be washed out looking. If that is how they adjust for nightfall though... eeeew. Actually, Lavinder's image in the "snow" was pretty washed out looking as well. I admit they are pretty sharp and what not (due to your AA) - but the color levels are a bit off from reality.

Remarkable progress in graphics but some of them still need enhancements.

I see that this is turning into a Crysis thread, so let me add that the best water graphics/dynamics I've seen so far are the ones used in Onimusha I and II (the water in Onimusha III looks like jelly; the same as Uncharted on PS3. As for Onimusha IV, it's water looks too blue, like an exotic cocktail). They're just too real; I've read somewhere that they used movie engine to generate the water :tmb:

Crysis is a beautiful game, thier engine makes everything look so perfect and so real. It's not much of a game though, it's more to do with showing what the artist can do from the work of that game studio.

I use the Crysis engine to test out my 3d environments, just as a quick test to see how they look in game.

One has more newer looking textures............that would be the 3d one haha

I do know the difference between 'contrast' and 'brightness' (I do digital photography after all), you don't have to treat me like an idiot.

I think you are just being particularly picky...

Their engine is fantastic, really nice to work with. I have done some level editing with their editor/engine and it works flawlessly in real time - everything is customizable.

You can sort of tell, you can see where the guys got lazy and just repeated patterns. Reality is to individual for computer designers to bother with, until they come up with a game engine that can create areas using random blades of grass and leaves as it pleases within parameters given by the designers, it will always come down to repeating graphics.

The thing with pic's like that is that the guy who took them was using some hyper mega gaming pc, which was pushing itself to the limit, and actual gameplay was impossible, he just got the image and left.

It'll be a couple of years before we can afford to enjoy graphics like that.

01-02-09, 15:00
That's CryEngine 2, the same engine used for Crysis. It's incredible the level of realism it can handle, it's a pitty that no hardware is able to run it at decent frame rates.
