Swiss authorities announced today that they had found a large marijuana plantation while using Google Earth, the extremely popular free satellite mapping software.

The discovery was part of an ongoing investigation that has so far led to the arrest of 16 people and the seizure of 1.2 tons of marijuana with a street value of $2.5 million USD. Cash and other valuables were seized as well with a value of over $800,000 USD.

The head of Zurich police's specialist narcotics unit, Norbert Klossner, said the field was in the northeastern canton (state) of Thurgau. The plantation is about 7500 square meters and was hidden inside a larger field of corn.

"It was an interesting chance discovery," said Klossner.

The 16 suspects have allegedly sold 7.7 tons of marijuana since 2004, making an average of 6 million Swiss francs a year.

LMAO

Google Earth rules! :D

They should at least announce when they are making the pictures though, I mean you can zoom really far in and see quite a lot of details on it. I could recognize my own home.
I have tried to search for some people walking outside though, but that was really hard. Did they edit them out or something?

Well I did find a few shadows after some good searching. :p

Seriously, how could you recognise a marijuana field on Google Earth in the quality that it shows the satellite images in?

Sorry, but I believe this article to be fake.

Well you can sort of tell a forest apart from a corn field... I'm guessing the part of the field that was covered with marihuana stood out somehow and they figured something might be up.

And it can't be like their narcotics division just sits all day on Google Earth looking for marihuana fields, I'm guessing they were after such a plantation for some time, had some trails perhaps, and went on to try anything they could think of - and scored.

Imagine that what you can do using Google Earth is probably like, 1/100th of what current technology is actually capable of... And there's probably people out there who do have access to it...

It's kinda scary.

Yeah, google earth has terrible quality in the pictures.
Doubt highly that marijuana could be possibly spotted.

I would also think that it's really unlikely cannabis (which is what it's really called people :P) would grow OUTSIDE in Switzerland. But I'm not too familiar with Swiss weather conditions.

I've not seen that much Mary Jane in one spot EVER!! (I grew a couple plants one time though :mis:)

Err, can somebody post a picture? Please? :D
I'd like to see it myself, but as with most things that are mentioned about google earth (that I've seen anyhow) there is not a link to that particular part of the globe.
Well you can sort of tell a forest apart from a corn field... I'm guessing the part of the field that was covered with marihuana stood out somehow and they figured something might be up.

true true.... its no news really that you can use aerial imagery to locate marijuana fields. i think it just stands out that it was supposedly found using google earth of all things. and for that matter - if the field really were visible through google earth (and there is most likely hundreds of them yet to be discovered - in various parts of the world) its hit or miss as to whether it still exists or not. Last I checked, the google earth image of my home is years old. Back from when we still had a trampoline in the back yard and my little sister hadn't yet made it into high school. (and she is in college now) ;)

And it can't be like their narcotics division just sits all day on Google Earth looking for marihuana fields, I'm guessing they were after such a plantation for some time, had some trails perhaps, and went on to try anything they could think of - and scored.
its like finding a needle in a haystack with that thing if you dont know where you should be looking. but, if they had "trails" or "leads" so to speak, then they could very well have tasked a helicopter over the region instead of using the uber low quality google earth.

it may be true, but it just sounds too crazy to me.

not all places will have the high quality though... in fact - some regions of the world such as China and Malaysia - you can NOT get in close enough for that kind of detail. They simply will not allow it. It goes black.

I wonder if you burn the field, will everybody in close proximity get high? :D

spikejones
31-01-09, 02:48
yeah... if you burn mass quantities of the stuff and you stand in the smoke - you'll get high alright. as per the photo - I dunno to be honest. I actually had installed google earth for all of about 10 minutes (since my last post) - got ****ed at the crap quality - and uninstalled it. :vlol:

anyhow... i can go to my address and I can turn on all the fancy 3d buildings and such - but nothing changes. If I click the "road view" box though - i get the ability to click the little camera and see from where they were standing in the middle of the road right outside my house a couple years ago (I can tell the approximate age from the vehicles in the image) that jeep cherokee lives no more:p

lets say you sell 1.2 tons at 5 bucks a gram. thats gonna be:

$5,376,000

but of course you dont actually sell that much pot like that. you sell in bulk at wholesale prices. ;)

There was a guy living here in Brizvegas a while ago like...5 years ago and he was living with his Grandpa. When he was in high school he planted one lonely little plant just for himself to benefit from, but when he went away for schoolies (thats like spring break for our American friends) he came back to find that his grandpa thought it would make a wonderful hedge and had planted several of the things right out the front of the house in the front yard.

The funny thing is the police didnt even notice until recently when the grandson had moved away and the old man died and the house went up for auction.

They then didnt do anything about it, turns out nobody else noticed either.

Moral of the story: The best place to hide something is out in the open where everyone can see it!

I remember reading a few years ago that it's illegal for a non-military satellite to have high enough resolution to pick up the detail necessary for seeing individual people. Upon seeing the picture with the men and the camel, I'm wondering if that law expired or if it's different in other countries.
