In recent events of the Square Enix take over. I looks as though Warner Bros has pulled out its share of Eidos therefore no movies.

Very sad news , I really wanted a movie :(

But at least the games will be so much better in quality.

Please provide sources otherwise it's just speculation. Besides, WB owns the movie rights to the franchise. They can still go for it if they want to.

The articles you've posted merely discuss the buy out, nothing to do with the movie rights, which WB could still hold on to but now this means they'll have to deal with Square. If WB holds onto the movie rights and feels that there is a potential for profit with another TR film, then it's not out of the running just yet. It's too soon to say what will happen regarding the movie's status.

The way I read the article on

"Warner Bros. is particularly screwed. In December of 2006, it bought 10% of the game publisher for $86.8 million. Then in April of 2008, it agreed to invest about $30 million for another 10%. Today, as part of the Square Enix announcement, Eidos announced that Warner Bros. will be ponying up its 20% stake. Its payment? Approximately $24 million. Which means the movie studio has lost around $93 million on its Eidos investment.

(Of course, Warner Bros. has long been considering buying Eidos. The fact that it would rather take that big a loss than spend another $100 million or so to buy the whole thing tells you what it thinks of the publisher's prospects.) In addition, Warner Bros. had a deal to distribute and market all of Eidos' games in North America. Square Enix will surely take over those duties once it takes control (though I wouldn't be surprised if WB still handles "Arkham Asylum," since it comes out soon -- this spring -- and it's based on a Warner property). Given Eidos' recent performance, it's hardly a huge blow, but still, it's the end of a plan announced with much gusto about two years ago.

Eidos was the last publisher using Warner Bros. for North American distribution and marketing. Back in late 2006 and 2007, it signed partnerships with companies including Eidos, Codemasters, Empire and Brash to handle those duties as part of a larger strategy of becoming a videogame distributor. But that didn't work out and all the partners left WB fairly quickly. Now the studio is back to just handling its own games from Warner Bros. Interactive (though it does have the upcoming one-off "Wanted" that it's handling for Universal)."

I got that the WB are no longer in the running.

But re-reading it as it says here

"Assuming the deal gets approved at a shareholders meeting early next month."

It still has to be approved.

I think I read it wrong , sorry on my part.

This.

If you notice, neither movie says "Eidos" anywhere on it.

In fact, the only legal notice regarding the games is "TOMB RAIDER and LARA CROFT are trademarks of Core Design Ltd." Interestingly, Tomb Raider: Legend also shares this copyright notice - but I can't seem to find it on Tomb Raider: Underworld.

Also, the Tomb Raider movies were produced by Paramount, not Warner Brothers. Warner Brothers were, however, involved with the game Tomb Raider: Underworld, and were rumored to have been in bidding to buy Eidos.

SE doesn't have the movie rights.
WB has secured those for the final time.

If Warner Bros. doesn't do it, couldn't they get other film companies to do it, or is TR sold to WB?

Warner bought the movie rights last December but this article only talks about the stock price not the movie rights so as far as we know Warner is still doing the movie. If Warner can make a great movie then they will make back some of that 93 million they lost. They did it with Batman so who knows?

Never really truely thought there was going to be a 3rd movie, especially if Megan Fox accepted the role, the movies would have ended at 2 for me. :/

But I guess only time will tell, hopefully they do it right if they do it at all.

I believe Warner Brothers was on the opening credits of Cradle Of Life, but not Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

One more time...

Warner bought the movie rights to Tomb Raider in December 2008, they even have producers for it already. What we don't know is how the deal with Square Enix affects this.

Doesn't make any difference really...Square could still do a movie and it would be quite cool if they could do one like Final Fantasy Advent Children :D You never know....

Square Enix should make a CGI movie like they did with Final Fantasy VII. That would be amazing. :cln:

WB has purchased the film rights to Tomb Raider after Paramount let the rights lapse. Paramount no longer has anything to do with the future of the film franchise.

WB has the movie rights, Square Enix has the game rights.

Square Enix will shortly own Eidos and Tomb Raider, new owner takes over they are not committed to abide by any agreements made by the previous owner, Eidos licensed the movie rights to Warner Brothers they do not own them, just as Paramount did not. l do believe Square Enix will still go ahead with the movie though.

This.

Core Design has not been the owners of the copyright since they were sold off, Eidos own the copyright, since they still own the Core Design name. You will no longer be seeing Core Design's name on any new Tomb Raider games or movies, Legend was the last, after that Eidos is the copyright holder.

I think Warner Brothers still holds movie rights and could come to an agreement with Square Enix, but a film would take much longer to come to fruition now.

aussie500
23-03-09, 02:34
Would not take any longer, they are only in the early stages, and l have a suspicion Warner Brothers is still going to be an investor in Eidos as well as retaining the movie rights. But we will have to wait till May most likely to find out. It would be to the benefit of both Eidos and Square Enix to keep the arrangements Eidos have already made as regards distribution in the USA region.

I really keep hoping for that. If I wasn't so technologically handicapped, I'd do it myself.
