I'm sure a thread like this has been made many a time, but as an aggressive film fanatic, I demand that another is spawned. :p

So, what five films do you enjoy watching more than any others? If five's too hard, expand it to ten, twenty or eleventy-one.

My list (in alphabetical order)

American Beauty
Blade Runner
A Clockwork Orange
Donnie Darko
The Graduate

Other honourable mentions: The Godfather, The Godfather Part Two, Straw Dogs, Easy Rider, Taxi Driver, Batman '89, Batman Returns, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Goodfellas, A Matter of Life and Death, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien, The Evil Dead, Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street '07, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre '74, Toy Story, Rear Window, Psycho, Fight Club, American Psycho, Trainspotting, Quadrophenia, Robocop, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Silence of the Lambs, Raging Bull, Blue Velvet, El Laberinto del Fauno, Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Assault on Precinct 13 '76, Chinatown, King Kong '33, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Boys Don't Cry, Back to the Future

Just five? I'd rather it be ten. But if you insist:

1. Pan's Labyrinth
2. King Kong (1933)
3. Conan the Barbarian
4. Heavy Traffic
5. Taxi Driver

If I could expand it up to 10 the list would include:

6. El Topo
7. Robocop
8. Evil Dead 2
9. Ninja Scroll
10. The Last Temptation of Christ

And if expanded up to 20, the list might include:

11. Deliverance
12. Road Warrior
13. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
14. American Beauty
15. Groundhog Day
16. Being John Malkovich (or anything else written by Kauffman)
17. Sideways
18. Lord of the Rings (all)
19. Quills
20. Last Tango in Paris

And I feel kind of bad about this list, too, because there are many others I could name. Who here thinks the movies we select say quite a bit about us as people? I think they might. I just hope we don't run into someone with a list like this:

1. Faces of Death
2. Cannibal Holocaust
3. Nekromantic
4. Jackass
5. I Spit on Your Grave
6. Caligula
7. Thriller: A Cruel Picture
8. Bloodsucking Freaks
9. Wolf Creek
10. Pink Flamingos

I hate these kind of threads but I always end up posting. As for favourite films... 5 is probably impossible, 10-30 runs the risk of forgetting films that should be included in a personal list but for some reason were forgotten at the last minute. 31+ is too impractical all round to be of any use and goes against the purpose of the thread. So to counter, I'll do what I usually do and pick 5 films that have vied for my attention again most recently.

Bladerunner
Once Upon a Time in the West
The Big Sleep (Original)
The Thing
Harvey

Oh look... a fellow Shropshire lad! ;)

Hmm, let's see... in no particular....

Shawshank Redemption
What a film should be in my eyes - a well crafted and awesome story brilliantly acted.

Duel
Spielberg's first feature is one of his best in my opinion. It's low budget adds to its charm and doesn't detract from the suspense he builds up with such little dialogue.

Back to the Future
Seen this about a million times and it gets better each time. I know this back to front. Great story with brilliant little touches.

Trading Places
Eddie Murphy at his best. Hilarious film with a great story.

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest
Brilliant story. Of course.. Jack makes the film.

Independence Day- Amazing movie and is awesome to see how the world works together in it, I hope one day we can be like that as well.
Pay it Forward-Amazing message, sad ending
The Passion of Christ- Just so powerful and sad
Prince of Egypt- Just a great movie
The Ten Commandments- I always watch it around Easter and since I am Catholic it means a lot to me.

How could I forget them? *adds to original post*

Tyrannosaurus - I do think the films we enjoy reflect us a great deal. I don't think there's much of a link between the five films I chose, though you could argue maybe that they represent a specific time period (Blade Runner and A Clockwork Orange are set in unpleasant near-future environments, Donnie Darko deals with time travel, whilst also being a throwback to the eighties, The Graduate conveys the growing rebellion of the younger generation in the sixties, etc.) I can say I've only seen one of the films in your "crude" list, which was Cannibal Holocaust. A well-made film, I guess, but easily the most unnerving horror film I've seen.

Hero

But, apart from perhaps the first two, any of the following could also make up my top 5 (probably depending on my exact mood at the time :p):

Let me know what that tells you about me ;)

Oh I love so many movies it is impossible to say, but some I watch a lot;

Goodfellas (The life of Henry Hill, 3 decades of hell I would say. Awesome movie, and so cool! Real life too.)
Taxi Driver (ahah, alone Travis Bickle is one of the most interesting characters portrayed in any movie ever!)
Hellraiser (How can one not appreciate the darkness of this movie. You don't see the cenobites that much, but the atmosphere is chilling to the core)
Empire of the Sun (Such beautiful cinematography, not only that, it has a story based up on one of my favorite novels.)
Contact (I love Jodie Foster, and this movie make me think a lot about life and the universe. It's also a very touching story between a relationship who have different opinions. One about science, the other religion.)

Good! Last time I was asked to make a top 5 (or was it top 3?) of favourite movies, I ended up with some bad choices... Time to rectify!

But I'll have to think about it, so I'll come back and add over the days (not that a whole lot of people will notice once this thread moves on, but that's not a problem since I'm not only doing it for you :p)

My current selection is (listed arbitrarily):

1. The Last of the Mohicans
2. American Beauty
3. Vanilla Sky [?]
4. LotR: The Fellowship of the Ring
5. Equilibrium

Edit: made some changes today, several months after I originally posted, but I think I've come as close to a top 5 as I can. Not that anyone will notice it anyway, I guess it's just for my own sake. :p

Well, not many people have seen Pi, it's a VERY indie film, unfortunately, because I think there's a lot to be learned from it... Same for Empire of the Sun, it's not exactly indie but it's not very popular either, for a Spielberg movie (and I think it's his best!). And I supose 2001 isn't very appealing either, soooo many people I try to show it to are put off just by the first 10 minutes.. :p

.......but not watching Fight Club is unforgivable!!! :smk: :D

Meh, I found it underwhelming with stilted acting, mundane dialogue and too much flashy CGI. I also thought Anakin's "fall" was a bit of a cop out, mainly because he never came across as a likable or heroic character. He just whined a lot and was already murdering sand people and shouting in Episode II, so I didn't really care when he turned. And the love story was awful. But it did have a very dark tone and was the best of the prequels. So each to their own.
