Michael Schumacher has reinforced expectations he will dominate this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix by setting the fastest time in first practice. The world champion was nearly one second ahead of the fastest non-Ferrari on his first flying lap. His time of one minute 15.658 seconds was 0.375secs quicker than team-mate Rubens Barrichello and 0.958secs ahead of BAR test driver Anthony Davidson. Jenson Button was fifth in his BAR, with David Coulthard's McLaren 13th.

With teams only allowed to use only one engine per race weekend, the top drivers did very few laps in the first session, preferring to save their engines for more important work. That allowed Davidson and Toyota test driver Ricardo Zonta, who was fourth fastest, to shine. The early indications from the Circuit de Catalunya are that the race behind Ferrari will be close. Button is 0.105secs ahead of Williams driver Ralf Schumacher, with Fernando Alonso of Renault and the other BAR race driver Takuma Sato close behind.
