View Full Version : Wendy Richard dies

26-02-09, 16:27
Wendy Richard, the actress who appeared in some of Britain's best-loved and most long-running television programmes, has died today, her agent Kevin Francis said. She was 65 and had been suffering from cancer.

Ms Richard's career spanned five decades of British television and film, since her first appearance in 1961 in the series Stranger on the Shore.

She went on to play Joyce Harker in the BBC's 1960s soap opera, The Newcomers, made appearances in Dad's Army, The Likely Lads and Up Pompeii!, and became a household name as the impressionable Miss Brahms in Are You Being Served? from 1972 to 1985.

She is perhaps best known for her 21 years playing the redoubtable, sad-faced matriarch Pauline Fowler, from the first episode of the BBC1 soap opera EastEnders in 1985 to her character's death in 2006. Gossip columns said she insisted on being written out of the plot as she did not like the turn her character's storyline was taking, with the show's writers plotting that she should remarry.

A Conservative supporter, she was also reputed once to have refused to deliver a rant against the then prime minister Margaret Thatcher, accusing the EastEnders writers of foisting their own political views on her.

She appeared in two Carry On films, Carry On Matron and Carry On Girls, but her appearance in the cult 1965 Beatles movie Help! ended up on the cutting room floor.

Ms Richard endured two battles with breast cancer in the mid 1990s and then in 2002. Her cancer went into remission after years of treatment, and she was given a clean bill of health in 2005 - only to be told last year that the disease had returned, in an aggressive form.

She married her fourth husband John Burns, 20 years her junior, on October 10 last year, at a ceremony in a Mayfair hotel attended by a galaxy of well-known faces from British television, a few days after she made public that her diagnosis was terminal.

She died today in the Harley Street Clinic in London with her husband by her side.

“She was incredibly brave and retained her sense of humour right to the end,” said Mr Francis.

News of her death circulated at a service today to remember former managing director of television at the BBC, Sir Bill Cotton, and many of those attending paid tribute.

So sad!

I am truly sadend by this :(, because she was a beautiful actress and I am not just talking about her role in Eastenders but she was a fantastic actress in her past film and tv roles and she was a beautiful person who had been through a lot in her lifetime.

It just seems too soon, just when she was getting better. :(
