View Full Version : The Original Tomb Raider Newsgroups
Does anyone else here remember playing TR1 before the days of internet forums and walkthroughs? I can recall there was a few newsgroups such as alt.tombraider etc but that was about it. I recognise one name from those days and thats Jeff Reid. I used a different handle then and can't even remember what it was !
There was a text walkthrough for TR1 soon after it came out. Text walkthroughs for older games were available before the internet, back in the days of bulletin boards, and services like compuserve.
Colleges and unix types were using usenet, a precursor to general public usage of the internet, mostly in the form of newsgroups. The newsfeeeds were transmitted from system to system, usually via modems over phone lines.
alt.games.tombraider is a newsgroup, which were originally usenet, then later supported by ISP's. I don't know if there is some master archival of the newsgroup feeds, or if it's done by multiple entities.
TR1 was released in late 1996, about the same time internet access via local phone companies became available in a few cities. I think I got Pacifc Bell Internet via dial up somewhere back in 1997. I switched to broadband via cable (Cox cable) back in 2001.
For general information and walkthroughs, Croft Times http://www.crofttimes.com had some walktrhoughs done by Theresa before she go her own web site (I don't recall her URL). Stella has had her own web site http://tombraiders.net for as long as I can remember.

and so on
weren't those pages really something :yah:
at least for those who where there back then...
I remember being so addicted to Croft Times back then. It was great to enter that news-paper like site daily.
I thought it was closed, but I just saw the link on this thread. It's a bit different but it was def a surprise! I wonder if Luis Cunha is still the editor.
