View Full Version : UP Arrow keeps minimizing

Minimus
26-05-09, 20:15
I have a Windows XP that's about 7 years old (I don't use it for everyday use, only for Sims 2 and such), and when I play any game that requires the arrow keys to move, the up arrow always minimizes the game. Then, if I re-open it, the screen is black but I can hear everything. :(

An example of this is any of my Tomb Raider game (specifically the classics, but it did it with Anniversary demo too). I can press it, but I'd have to hold it down for several seconds, or the game would minimize (I'm really hating that word now).
Can anybody help me out here please?

Run Diagnose.exe (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/diagnose.exe) and ARDiag.exe (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/ardiag.exe) and post both reports.

Thanks for helping. But I'm not entirely sure what to do with them - I just downloaded them, but I can't open them - obviously because I'm on a Mac. If I datastick them onto my Windows computer (which has no internet), what would I do then? I'm not the brightest crayon in the box when it comes to Technical difficulties, as you may have noticed.

EDIT I tried using those programs, but it froze and wouldn't close down, so I had to restart the computer.

As you have issues with WinXP PC, you must obviously run both programs under XP and post both reports here then.

I still have no idea what to do. It's only when I play the classic Tomb Raider games that the screen goes black when I re-open it. But it's still so annoying, especially when I'm recording for my videos :(

Was I using simple English not :mis:

As you have issues with WinXP PC, you must obviously run both programs under XP and post both reports here then.

I think I know what you mean now, thanks
I'll give it a try today. If it doesn't work, then I'll post.

I'm trying it now, but just so you guys know, it's not just Tomb Raider that this is happening with. It's just whenever I use the up arrow, with a game or not. :)

1. Uninstall Norton/Symantec crap completely. Time for decent antivirus - get Kaspersky or Dr.Web at least.

2. Download and run Autoruns (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx) under your WinXP installation, get rid of those entries:

3. Disable Intel integrated audio in BIOS setup.

4. Update video (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_93.71_2.html) and audio (http://www.creative.com) drivers.

5. Check if you have no hotkeys configured in Display control panel.

^ Thank you so much for your time. I know how I'm going to sound, but I really am bad with technical things on computers. Really bad. (Although you have posted simple instructions)

Just one thing - my Windows computer, the one this thread is about, has no internet connection. I thought it was a hotkey, I just don't know how I can change it.

5. Check if you have no hotkeys configured in Display control panel.

I've tried looking in the control panel, I can't find the area to change the hotkey.

6. WARNING!!! You have VERY low free space on HDD! Perform drive cleanup and defragmentation!

Then report about your progress.

I'm the only person who uses it, I'm going to buy a portable hard drive soon and put most of the computer's data onto it.

I'm pretty sure the rules of the Technical Support said if there's been an unresolved problem for a while, we're allowed to bump :o

How old is your keyboard? Are there "windows" keys on it?
Try another keyboard and report here.

Minimus
18-09-09, 14:35
The keyboard is actually quite old :o
It has a couple of keys with the Windows logo on, if that's what you mean.

EscondeR

One of them must be stuck or glitches when arrow keys are pressed - therefore minimizing.
Take someone's keyboard to check. If the glitch is gone, buy yourself a new keyboard.

Done - works fine! Thank you EscondeR :)
