What exactly does an RAR do? Is it free? safe? trust worthy? links? legal?

It's just like .zip but with a more efficient compressing process.

Its a file type, like a powerful compressed zip file.
To open rar files you'll need WinRAR (http://www.rarlab.com/)
or WinZip (http://www.winzip.com/index.htm)

They are both free, but WinRAR has like some day limit but I think you can still use it.

I haven't been posting as much, but I'm still here. It took something like 2 years for me to be "active" on this forum :)

I only tried winrar, I don't know which is better. I believe the limit is like 40 days, but I heard that nothing happens after the grace period and you can still use it but try both and find out whats better for you they're both xp/vista/win7 compatible :)

I'd had mine longer than 40 days and it works fine.

There's 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) too, if you're looking for a freeware option. It extracts RAR files along with a bunch of other formats.
