I know that there are a few fans of her's here and because we probably won't get a social group, I really wanted to make her a thread.

I essentially grew up on her music and she was, to me, the quintessential artist. Talented, beautiful, diverse, and down to earth, she epitomized everything that a celebrity should be.

I love her music :)

She was a really talented girl, it´s a shame she died* :(

BTW I don´t know if you knew, her brother was also famous and lots of people loved his music, at least here in México.

*thanks for pointing that Draco :)

I never knew of her until she died, but I've never heard anything to her detriment. By all accounts she was a beautiful, talented smart, girl and a great role model for young girls.

It was really a shame what happened to her.

Such a beautiful, talented woman. My respect goes out to her.

How did she die? :(

In early 1995, the Quintanillas discovered that Yolanda Saldívar, the president of Selena's fan club (Texas-section) and the manager of her boutiques, was embezzling money from the fan club and decided to fire her. Soon after the fallout, Selena agreed to meet Saldívar in a Days Inn hotel in Corpus Christi[12] on the morning of March 31, 1995 to retrieve paperwork for tax purposes. At the hotel, Selena demanded the missing financial papers. Saldívar delayed the handover by claiming she had been raped in Mexico.[2] The singer drove Saldívar to a local hospital where doctors found no evidence of rape.[13] Saldívar returned to the motel where Selena again demanded the missing financial papers.

Selena told her that she just couldn't be trusted anymore. At 11:48 am, Yolanda drew a gun from her purse, pointing at Selena. As the singer turned and left the room, Saldívar shot her once in the back. Critically wounded, Selena ran towards the lobby to get help. She collapsed on the floor as the clerk called 911, with Saldívar chasing her, calling her a *****.[14] Before collapsing to the floor, Selena named Saldívar as her assailant and gave the room number where she had been shot.[15] After an ambulance and the police arrived on the scene, Selena was transported to a local hospital. She died there from loss of blood at 1:05 p.m., at the age of 23.[16]

She was certainly talented.

Its been alleged that Yolanda was lesbian and bitter that her romantic advances on Selena were scorned, i don't know how much truth there is to this, though.

My mother has the purple suited official Selena Barbie doll in mint condition.

Ive followed her music since i was about 5. I love pretty much all her music, specialy her english songs. Selena definetly was a 1 in a million singer, she actualy cared about her fans unlike alot of the stuck up singers we have running around now. She didnt let money go to her head, she was just like everyone else. She was a beautiful person Inside as Well as outside.

Fav song by her is definetly Where Did The Feeling Go.

Thanks for making this thread =)

Sadly this was the only time she got to perform this beautiful song

This song "Como te extraño" (How I miss you) was written
by Selena's father after she was shot to death.
It's a beautiful song that will make you cry, performed by
Pete Astudillo who was a member of her band who had a
romantic thing going with her.
I always thought the song was about a boyfriend losing his
girlfriend - but it's really about a father losing his daughter -
much worse.

She was a great singer and I liked a lot of her songs. I felt it was unfair that she had to pass away at such a young age when she also had so much talent. :o Ever since I knew about her death, I detest the name Yolanda... no offense to anyone with the name. :whi:

I don't know how many of you have seen this, but its incredibly touching. They did a Spanish cover of Boyz II Men's "Its So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday" as part of a tribute to Selena.

I had a couple casette tapes of hers - and still have one.
My car only had a casette player.
I thought J Lo did a good acting job in the movie and even looked the part.
I'm no fan of J Lo, but credit where credit is due, I guess.

A lot of the Mexican immigrant families in Chicago kept a picture of
Selena on the living room wall - along with a portrait of Jesus.
They almost worshipped Selena. I thought it was kind of quaint, myself,
I mean taking a pop star so seriously.

My family holds her this way also, i don't know why, but i'm not ashamed of it.

Selena's music and who she was really struck a chord with all of us. Here was this beautiful young woman who was incredibly talented and charismatic. She was larger than life (well, for the Spanish speaking community), yet she was so down to earth and reachable. She was a wonderful role model.. she wasn't trashy or overly sexy or profane, and to top it off, she was Hispanic, a real reflection of my heritage and someone I could proudly relate to. Growing up, i didn't have any other role models, and truly, i didn't need one. I wanted to be her so bad. I even swore as a child that i would become rich and famous as a singer, but i only wanted to sing her songs, lol.

When she died, it was terribly, terribly shocking and sad. I felt like a part of me died also. She was all i'd ever listened to and then she was gone.. my idol was not as immortal and solid as i'd always felt she was.

I still to this day think Jennifer was the perfect choice for Selena, the film was her best work and made you believe she was actually her. She captured Selena's personality perfectly. The film still makes me cry when I watch it.

She was singing when she was 10 years old and was a

Do you know that in spanish speaking forums the reasons for her death goes from average jealousy to demonized lesbian behaviour? There were fundamentalistic groups that said that her music was subliminal, and then they said her death was tragic, cause she had no fault about her fan club president lesbian behavior (wich is bull...).

I found a very interesting interview to Yolanda Saldívar (the murder). It's in spanish, but i may find a quick way to translate it.

Here (http://www.online-translator.com//url/translation.aspx?direction=se&template=General&autotranslate=on&transliterate=&showvariants=&sourceURL=http://www.univision.com/content/content.jhtml?chid=3&schid=160&secid=1372&cid=373989&pagenum=1) :) Is translated by the best tool online :).

I don't think there was any subliminal message to any of Selena's music, that sounds really goofy to me.

I have heard, though, that Yolanda killed Selena mostly because she was in love with her.. i've heard that Selena spurned her advances and this was the final straw for Yolanda.

My mother has the E! channel's televised reenactment of the trial on VHS, and watching this, Abraham Quintanilla was apparently the one who first revealed Yolanda's alleged romantic fawning over Selena, and he supposedly told his daughter all about this and to be careful.

What do they do during the tribute?

Mokono
29-06-09, 19:06
Is basically a singing, while other people sells "estampitas" (cards with her pic on the front and a pray on the back). It's usually a singing performed by selected women who can perform along or separate a certain amount of songs. Sorrounding the place are other minor stages where artists who were influenced by her music can sing too. At the end, there's a speech about her.

I think the theme for picking Selena is because a peruvian singer was murdered the same day Jacko died... So it's basically a tribute for those, comparing both tragedies.

Edit...

Here's an impersonation made on a TV tribute on channel 5 here:
