.....It's actually trying to get my back USB ports to work on my laptop! I'm not sure if they are busted or just really loose, but they aren't responding anymore when i plug stuff in. It's not the cables or USB's i plug in, they still work on my only ONE working port. and when it does work its cause i have to play around with the cables but it takes so long and its really giving me whiplash.

so anyone know if you can get this fixed at all if you took it into a shop?

Sounds like the solder was broken loose from the board. I'd say to take it to the shop for repair :)

I'm sure you can get your USB ports fixed. But you could equally go out and buy a USB hub that lets you plug multiple things into the one working port you do have.

usb ports are nice and all that jazz, but not all devices work properly from a HUB and must be plugged directly into the PC. Id recommend having the machine professionally checked out (as did irjudd).

Could be the power supply cable malfunctioning and underpowering the USB hubs. Happened to me once and I have to replace it. Is there any other mates who havethe same laptop whose power cable you could borrow? How's the USB port acting when you are on battery power?

Thanks for all your help guys

yeah i thought about getting a USB hub but what happens if my ONE usb port goes out? then i would have a laptop that you couldn't plug into.

I use to plug in my wireless internet usb device with an extension cable, and i'm using that same cable and usb on my one working port so the cable is fine. I tried it with the power adaptor out and it still worked.

It's just the 2 USB ports at the back are faulty...

any idea how much it would cost to get it fixed?

Better go and ask: get your laptop checked, then you'll be told the price if repair is necessary.

BTW, are you sure all/correct drivers are installed? What OS are you on? What OS was on your laptop initially?

the OS is Windows XP... the driver i have no idea what its called to see if i have to reinstall it, but the USB port yesterday albeit with alot of tampering.... if anyone knows what the USB port driver is called on the cd i can try installing it again.

^ You can try updating Chipset drivers. If you unsure what ones do you need, run Diagnose.exe (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/diagnose.exe) on your laptop and post the report here.

From what I see you have your drivers up to date, except video chip (check for newer ones on laptop manufacturer site - www.support.hp.com).

So your issue can be hardware related ("break up"). You can take your laptop to service for them to check if this one is repairable.
