View Full Version : Someone PLEASE explain the 360 save system...

The save system on the 360 version is stupid, it makes no sense to me whatsoever. I can't start a new game with all my collected treasures from a previous playthrough carried over like I can on the PC. What's that about? The closest I can get to that is loading up the autosaves. But that creates continuity errors in the subsequent autosaves because I play through a chapter, collect a few new treasures then trigger the next chapter so that it autosaves. However, if I then quit and jump a chapter, the treasures I've just collected are no longer there in my area info.

To give an example (and this actually happened to me); I load up The Path to Avalon on the Med Sea level and find the treasures I'd missed dotted around the outside of the submerged temple. Having found those, I continue on to trigger the Niflheim autosave to make sure the additional treasures have themselves been saved (which is annoying in itself). Now, I know I've already got all the treasures from the Niflheim and The Norse Connection chapters and therefore have no need to trudge arduously through them, so I load up the God of Thunder autosave. But wait...all the additional treasures I just collected from The Path to Avalon disappear because I've loaded an autosave from a previous playthrough where the treasures hadn't been collected. And this applies to every single autosave after Niflheim on the Med Sea level. In simple terms, Underworld expects me to play through each level in its entirety and wrack up the consecutive autosaves as I go.

Why can I not jump around chapters within a level WITH additional treasures being saved as I go? Why can't I start a new game with all the treasures I've collected so far being carried over? The PC version does it, why can't the 360 version do it as well? The same applies to Treasure Hunt mode (which is the most boring mode ever invented for a videogame, but I digress).

Can someone please explain the logic behind this nonsensical save system?

Maybe you should just merge the light and darkness together!

The End!:D

^what does that have to do with the save system?

I can't answer your question Spong. All I know is that I didn't like the autosave system. I'd rather save where I want to, although you can do that too. I just found the combination confusing, made more so by the strange chapter titles. And the replay feature just isn't right is it? So you replay one level to gain treasures and they aren't there if you play another level? I prefer the 'replay level' from TRA. You can replay any level and it the stats will reflect what you've done, no matter what level you play or what order.

:vlol: If you merge the light and darkness with the save system, the problem will be solved.

Mikky - you're clearly an idiot. Go away and waste someone else's time.

Cheers for the reply Rai. Frankly, given that I posted this thread 15 hours ago and it's had more than 70 views so far, I'm stunned no one's replied with an explanation.

I take it that no one can answer my question then? No can explain why the save system on the 360 is complete arse? I just want somone to explain why it's the way it is. It's hard enough to find a reason to replay the game as it is without the save system putting a spanner in the works.

EDIT
From the complete wall of silence this thread's received I'm going to assume that all 360 owners agree with me that the save system in Underworld is complete crap.

This forum is not silent. It just feels that way because of all the light and darkness merging together! Don't you agree, spong?

Mikky, I know you're capable of making well articulated reasonable posts, so why are you spamming Spong's thread with all this light and dark nonsense. :smk:

Make sense right now, or I swear I'll....well not execute you where you stand, but, just explain yourself already or leave the thread. That's if there is an explanation.

And now you have me spamming so that I can say all that. :hea:

*puts thread back on topic* Does anyone have any answer to Spong's questions?

hey, Spong. i'm a 360 player as well, and yeah, the save system's crap. whereas you were collecting treasures, i was having the same issue with the stupid 'complete all time trials in the same play through' achievement.

furthermore, when someone on here refers to something they did in a level, sometimes i wanna go back and try it. well, dammit, i finished the flipping game! i should be able to go back replay any level i want! instead i've gotta deal with the autosave nonsense which may or may not be where i wanna go.

when i was in your situation, i just started the game over and busted my ass finding each and every treasure in order. that way i KNEW it would count it.

still couldn't trigger the damn speedrun achievement tho. even though i'm positive i beat them all in order. grr. i guess i was just outsmarted by the save system.

unfortunately, i have no idea why it's like this. nor why anyone would think this was gonna cut it for TRU players.

 No one cares about your spam :smk:

Spong, I´ve always hated TRU for it´s save system.

PC/PS3 are basically the same. X360 had those autosaves that allows you to start any level whenever you want. But you´re right :hea:

It completely makes no sense to replay a level if you´re going to lose what you collected while replaying another one.

Why couldn´t they just keep the same system from Legend/Anniversary. That was much better. Come on! Even the DS version had a proper replay function.

This definitely have to be fixed for the next game

Thanks for the responses guys (except Mikky, who seems to be a complete waste of space). I genuinely didn't know if it was just me and that I was somehow getting the save system wrong. But at least now I know it's definitely not me. Like stereopathic said, I simply cannot see the logic behind the save system, and I'm sure Eric Lindstrom said he'd had a hand in it. He must've forgotten to take his meds. It's terrible and I hope the next TR sees a return to the "simple ways" of saving that was present Legend & Anniversary.

I've only played my 360 version through once and I got every achievement apart from Master Grenadier and Master Treasure Collector. I was worried about the Speed Demon and Swan Diver achievements because I'd read that people had had problems with them, but surprisingly, I got them all. It seems that you can only get them all if you perform each of the three achievements in order (even if you've already got two) in one playthrough.

my first play through, i got the first and the third speed run achievements. then i went back to a previous save and got the second but i didn't do them all in one play according to the auto saves. which sucks.

the 2nd time i played through was the one where i was determined to get all the treasures/relics. i put a LOT of effort into getting those speed run ones again, too, but it's impossible to know if i'm beating the time allowed because the achievements won't pop up a second time. it's freaking frustrating.

on the master grenadier achievement, i threw a sticky bomb at a clump of spiders and it unlocked. if you ever go back to play it, that's a pretty easy way to unlock that one.

That's what I read somewhere too, that the first two achievements don't register if you've already got them and you're just going for the third. So until you go for the third and get it you have no idea if it'll actually happen. Which can mean a load of work for nothing :hea:

I was trying for it in the Lords of Xibalba room in the Midgard Serpent chapter of Southern Mexico (God, that was a mouthful), but every time I lobbed a grenade it got stuck to a tiny spider that always seemed to suddenly accelerate towards Lara and move away from all the others. And because I was playing on Master Survivalist, I only got a few chances

Augh, I know, isn't it messed up? I wish I would be more help to you... but all I can really say is that I feel your frustration. :( I hope someone has a better answer for you!

There seems to be a lot of darkness toward me. You must you use the light... the merge the darkness with it. Believe.

Whats to explain? It saves every start of level in a different slot, one after the other. You still can save whenever you like though, but you can't save over the autosaves.

I know how the auotosave system works, but it leads to continuity errors (as I stated above) when you replay chapters within levels and collect more treasures. It's completely nuts and makes no sense whatsoever. It sucks.
