Ok i just downloaded the level editor (for macs) from http://tombraiders.net/stella/
a) when i click on the file, it comes up as just "Plain Text". A little window pops up and its just a bunch of random symbols, what do i do?
b) i also noticed there is another Level Editor advertised on the website called Dxtre3d. Is it usable on macs?

Hello! Welcome to TRLE :)

Go ahead and take a visit to the tutorials forum section! Titak put together an index, it really helped me a lot at getting started back up again!

What extension does the downloaded file have? Like .zip, .rar, etc.

You may need to download a tool that can read the format of the downloaded file and uncompress it. I don't know what there is for the mac. But it depends on the file extension.

And please, DO NOT open multiple threads about the same problem.

The TRLE can only be used to make levels based on the TR4 engine.

That file from stella's site is in .sit format you need a program such as stuffit to decompress it. :)

Hej tombgame,

What kind of Mac are you using - a classic Mac with MacOS, or one of them modern intel-Macs, or rather : if it is one of them modern intel-Macs, do you use it with MacOS or with Microsoft Windows ?

If you use it with Windows, you can use the Windows-trle and also all the documentation for that.

If you use MacOS, it should know what to do with a .sit file by default.
That stuffit_blabla_exe is for windows users (only?), so they can unpack / decompress those oldstyle-Mac Archives. Like me, for example, I'm on PC with Windows and used it to open an archive made with stuffit on a Mac.
I think I downloaded it from an official apple site though, free for personal use or like that.

One more : if you run MacOS, what version of it ?

well i use a mac os x (version 10.5.4)
I decided that i dont want the official one that just uses the last revelation, could someone provide a link for a (relitively reliable) unnoficial level editor? Im new to this so i dont really know which ones are good, especially for macs. I dont really know where to look even. Which are some of the better unnofficial ones?

I am afraid there is just the one - DXtred3d.

I think Jesse builds with it now, he is the Builder of Tomb Raider the Wolf 1 and 2 and moreover, he is one of the few remaining builders on a Mac. I hope.
I forgot though if he is a member here at TRF, or if so under what name.

Anyways, get "DXtre3D 2.0 Rev 2c by Turbo Pascal" from e.g. aspidetr.com (http://www.aspidetr.com/index.php?section=toolsvers&page=2&idtool=21)
Next get the update for "rev.L", also from aspidetr.com (http://www.aspidetr.com/index.php?section=toolsvers&idtool=21)

You also may want PixStr and Fexinspect, the most basic tools. You know where to find them by now ;-)
Of course you could also try the homepage : www.dxtre3d.com, but it looks like not being updated since I don'tknowwhen.
But you can see some more tools associated with dxtre3d there.

You know the dxtre3d has it's own sub-forum here (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=24) ?

Good luck.

It doesn't just use the last revelation, remember this, the levels can be customized to look like TR1-TRC by object changing with a simple program called wad merger.

Try Macraider

I downloaded Dxre3d rev2, extracted the folder. clicked the exe and the installer popped up.

EDIT: I tried the editor out, Dxtre3d is too hard for me...

For me it just comes up as "plain text" whihc in reality is just a window with a bunch of symbols.

nope. idk how and i dont want to. since at this point i cant use any of the files i downloaded, would it be better if i bough the regular level editor? Since you claimed it was possible to make levels that resembled tr 1-5, as long as i had a wad merger, which is what i would want to do.
and also, could i use different outfits from different games/different weapons from different games in the regular level editor? Sorry im asking so many questions, im not quite sure what im doing. Whatever would be simpest ill get.

You don't have to buy TRLE - it is free.

I don't have a MAC, so I can't tell you why it isn't handling the compressed file properly. It doesn't have to do with trle, it is something you need to learn about the mac.

okthank you, and i mean ill just buy tomb raider chronicles (complete with level editor) off of like amazon or something

Forget about it, completely.

The Mac version of TRLE works only on Mac OS 9. Mac OS X up to 10.4 had emulation for that. 10.5, which you have, can not run Mac OS 9 software at all, though. And modern Macs with Intel CPU could never run any Mac OS 9 software to begin with.

Dxtre3d only works on Windows, not on Macs at all. You can install Windows on your Mac, either via BootCamp or through a virtual machine like VMWare and Parallels, of course, and I guess it should work there. This is not trivial, though.

I'm sorry that I don't have any better solution for you, but that's how it is. You cannot edit Tomb Raider levels on a modern Mac.
