Hello all :wve:

I'm making a new levelset which is based on the beloved TR4 Cairo style. This means that's there are no new objects, textures, or animations; only the basic stuff that came with the level editor (with a few other objects and textures ripped from TR4). I did this to prove that good levels CAN be made with the cairo wads, and that there's no reason to dislike those particular levels:p

The story is that Lara heard about an out-of-control situation back in the streets of the City of Dead, where the SAS soldiers attempt to stop a monster from destroying the city. Lara travels to the city to investigate, but she's not there to help the SAS, but to take matters in her own hands!

I'll probably make two levels: one is the basic level while the other kinda supports the first one. That way I don't have to worry about errors if the main level gets too big:o

WOW!
It reminds me of the Cairo levels from TR4. I guess the "music" from City of the Dead will be used.

Wrebbit

It's the same textures and objects as the Cairo levels.

And I don't know which music to pick. I never liked the background music in the Cairo levels.

Ah TR4 city levels...my least favorite type of levels.

However, you have apparently outdone yourself in the atmosphere of your previous level, so I will definitely keep an eye on this one. ;)

Good job ! :tmb:

Well,i didnt play any Level from Wrebbit but if he have the talent to make good gameplay and puzzles, this gonna be nice to play, because he seems to have big talent to make the rooms architecture... 98 rooms in 4 days... For me , it would be 4 mounths:(

Wrebbit
14-07-09, 18:45
Well I'm having 116 rooms now :o

But like 50 of the rooms are part of a gas room labyrinth ;)

116? I've done like 93 rooms but that has been taking me since MARCH to do.

Wrebbit, it looks very nice. I particularly like the mosque, both the inside and the courtyard outside. :tmb:

If you don't mind some constructive criticism, however, I strongly suggest you brighten up the lighting a bit. Yes, the wad and textures are meant for a dark level, but that doesn't mean it has to be as dark as TR4's Cairo levels. I'm currently playing those levels, and at every turn I just feel sad that the levels are so dark that it's almost impossible to appreciate the textures and architecture. Don't make the same mistake!

My GAWD, that looks awesome! Far better than CORE's Cairo levels!
I'm impressed! The original levels of TR4 looked so dull to me that I never ventured using their wad & textures, fearing I'd never come up with something good with that.
But your work so far is impressing! It makes me want to explore everything in there! And take it as a compliment, because I'm very picky! :p

I have thought about this too and this level is actually brighter than the original TR4 city levels.

I made a comparison. The first one is how I have it now, and the second one is with the lightning on 32 instead of 16 (and with a brighter sky).

I kinda like the dark one more. What's everyone's opinion on this?

Black Thorn
15-07-09, 09:40
IMHO the sky is way too bright in the second screen. But, yeah, the ambience lightning on 32 make the whole place better. It's up to you to choose, but I'd suggest you to brighten up a bit the ambience lightning and keep the sky dark.

Wrebbit
15-07-09, 10:16
It does look better :D

Btw why do I randomly see flare particles on my screen while I don't light flares? I've seen this in other levels too. What causes it and more importantly, how do I get rid of it???

Kevin
15-07-09, 11:40
As far as I know this happens when too many sprites are triggered. Do you have many flame_emitters?

Wrebbit
15-07-09, 11:54
Only 3 :s

You use TREP, right?

Probably it has something to do with that. In most of the levels I built with TREP I had the same problem...

I have added more effect to the streets to make them less bland.

Probably it has something to do with that. In most of the levels I built with TREP I had the same problem...It's not a TREP related problem.
It also happens in the old TRLE and in TRNG I'm afraid. :(

I'm back working on this project, altough I had to start from scratch again after losing the project file. Sooooooo, massive bump!

Titak
21-08-11, 13:34
Massive bump indeed! :vlol:
But with a good reason!

Sorry to hear you lost the project file.
But chances are it will become better this time. :D

Thank you Titak

I rebuilt the mosque I had in my original game!

Pretty dark, even on my screen (in broad daylight that is...) but it looks like it will be okay ingame. :D

I like the lighting actually, the greenish and blueish in it, as well as some reddish/brown stuff on the textures and the yellow of the flames. :tmb:

It reminds me of Chambers of Tulun :jmp:

Wrebbit
22-08-11, 09:55
Yeah, that's one of my concerns too, that the level will be too dark, but the textures, sky and objects are designed to be in a dark environment, and I tried to lighten it up a bit but didn't like it

Titak
22-08-11, 10:02
Like I said, it will probably be okay ingame.

I'm sitting here staring at my bright monitor in my bright livingroom. Even my own level looks very dark now while it really isn't all that dark. :vlol:

I don't think I've ever seen a custom based off the Cairo levels.

I don't think I've ever seen a custom based off the Cairo levels.

Me neither, altough it probably has something to do with the Cairo textures and objects not being liked as much as the other resources that came with the LE :p

I hate to triple post, but my two levels are finished!

I don't know yet if I want to make more levels, because 2 levels isn't that much...

Well all you have to do is play through the level, look for dead-ends and wrong textures and such. It's not that hard but it takes some time to do thouroughly.
