If you want more of a challenge, the PS1 version and its save crystal system are for you.

PC!!!

Seriously though, I prefer the save-anywhere system, controls, and better graphics of the PC version. I guess it depends upon what control system you are used to and whether you mind a restricted method of saving (in the PS1 version, you have to find save crystals which go into your inventory and then whenever you save you lose a crystal, so you can't save when you're out of crystals).

Well the control system dont bother me im used to that on either system. But i was thinking about them save crystals and i could get in deep crap if i ran out.

I think there's a cheat to get more save crystals, but I've never played the PS1 version so I'm not sure.

Yes there is if you put in the weapon cheat you will get more save crystals.

Oooh, i had both. PC has better graphics, on PS1 i remember bits of texture, kinda of like moving slitghley. Plus i prefer the save anywhere system, although you can use a cheat to get more Crystals on PS1, but then you also have to get all the weapons and medi-packs too.

i have both but i first played it completely on a ps1 ;)
the controls on the ps1 are easier 4 me to control,so id suggest that.

You can always try the PC version (easier, as you can save as much times as you want) using a good controller properly configured.

PC, save anywhere system, better graphics, you can mod the game :)

I have both versions, but I got the PS1 version first. But I would say PC. It's a damn-sight easier to get nowadays too, since there's the Sold Out release.

Anyways, I love the feeling of playing the game in a big CRT telly with those lo-res, trembling textures, with my original dualshock 1 in my good ol' PSX from 1996 :D You can always perform the cheat which gives you a whole load of save crystals :D

I had a PS1 before i had a PC, and when playing TR3 on the PS1, i pretty much gave up, as it was SO hard, due to being limited to collecting save crystals. So allot of the time i was having to do long sections of the game between getting the next save crystal, and if i died, that meant doing it all over again :cen: The PC version is less stressful, as you can save whenever you want :)

The vanilla PS1 version, without using any save cheats that give you X save crystals ;) will be a BIG challange, and you will be having to replay allot of areas, to work out where/what to do etc.

Difficult hair pulling challange = PS1 :cen:

Relaxing, at your leisure = PC :D

I count Tomb Raider as a PS game and as such thats what I play. Takes more skill to only have access to only the 92 saves for the entire game, rather than the "save after every step - yay I so killed this game" PC players version.
The only time I play, or should I say, the only reason I own, any TR PC version is for the Gold versions and The Lost Artifact, (which I count as discrimination against the loyal PS supporters)

The PC, for 3 key reasons

1. You can save wherever you want, and the "save crystals" instead act as a health boost.
2. Better Graphics, and it's not as dark.
3. You can download patches if you encounter bugs, whereas in the PS version you can't!

I say the Ps1 version.
It was dveloped for the ps1 and ported to pc.
Also you can play it on an emulator on your pc if you want better graphics (the emulator uses DirectX7 on the ps1 version which greatly enchances the graphics, better than the pc version.)
You can also use a controller with the emulator.
You cant save anywhere but it sorta adds to the challenge (and you can always cheat)

And finally I personaly find the ps1 version easier to find in used game stores and has no compatibility problems.

Just play it on your Ps1,Ps2,Ps3, or emulator

I play on a brightened PC version, but actually the game is DESIGNED to be dim, that's part of the challenge, just like save crystals. There's enemies lurking in those shadows!

I like researching bugs & shortcuts, so I'm different from a lot of players. I just wouldn't have had the time to find a lot of my stuff if I had played on a PS.

PS1 - The textures on PC just look really smooth and weird. The moves are easier to use, too :)

PS1, its more difficult. And if u have an emulator you can make the game look even better then the pc version:whi:

I wanna stand for TR3 of PS1, because despite the crappy console it was, lightning and effects were more advanced. I'm gonna ask a friend for his disk to prove what i'm saying.

I suggest PC more, though I play PS1 myself :D But, I'm stuck in TR3 in a very annoying point and don't have any savegame crystals, and I don't want to use any codes etc., so you can imagine how irritating it is :D (And though PC has better graphics and other stuff, I've always liked to play at PS1 :D)

So I say PC!

Bellacima

Looks dont matter it's the gameplay that counts, the PS1 version is TR3 for me. The PC has good graphics but without save crystals it's just not the same.

Well, if you have a PC joypad then your all set :p
I think on Tomb Raider 2 the sound on the ps1 sounds worse, quieter and muffled, is that my game or is it supposed to sound worse??

PC definitely :)
I love being able to save anywhere.

Chocolate
26-07-09, 15:38
PC all the way!

Of course, you have better and smoother graphics.
You can save anywhere. But if you want the challenge then you can just keep track of the crystals you collect and limit yourself to however many crystals you collected.
You get to hack into the game and do all sorts of funky stuff, and even find secrets that you otherwise wouldn't have found on the PS1 version.

For me, being able to use the fly patch is the cherry on top. :D

26-07-09, 15:44
Is that what those green crystal things are?

Chocolate

Yeah, in the PS1 versions they're blue and I don't think they heal you...on PC it just works as a Small Medipack. :p

Manor:

Antartica:

PS: Translucent snowflakes and i also blew a rocket (nice explosion and black smoke).

It's not like i try to ridiculize PC graphics, but PS versions seems to be complete (loading bar, better menú settings, etc)... If it looks better on PC is also because of our new gpu's, although i smoothed the graphics with PCSX.

For the PC, set gamma to higher than the default 3 (I use 8). Screenshots can have their brightness and contrast edited by programs such as MS Picture Manager or IrfanView.

I always play TR3 in gamma 3 cause the lights looks better and also matches the number of the game. Also, i didn't edited the PC screenies details, because my point is to show what effects were left out from the PC version of the game. However, your last screenshot pwnd whatever idea i may have to stick to the PS version; i mean, awesome bugs and exploration :D! Easiest access and exploitation.

The Nevada screen for PS1 looks amazing! I think it's probably because of how the water looks so...clean. :D

I mean I noticed that in TR3, EVERY water colour is the same, except for when you fight Tony. Even the water at the flooding toilets in High Security Compound. Actually Mokono, what is the colour of water in that part of the level? o.o

I have to confess that I've never seen PS1 graphics for Tomb Raider that look so nice.

The save crystals system is what appeals to me most about TR III, it often means you play large sections of the game without saving, resulting in raised tension which i love and a hightened sense of respect for even the most experienced raider.

A total pain after the PS TR2 spoiled it's players with the save anywhere system.
