Apparently not many people remember this jewel of a game. It was in my eyes the only game from Eidos that pushed the ESRB rating to the max. There's officialy 2 games made for PS1, and there was one planned for PS2 which was completed but never released due to AoD's failure im guessing. Recently there have been rumours about a movie coming out that will tie in with the next game which im hoping is true more so the new game lol.

Here's a cutscene I found from the cancelled third game in the series. (Most likely the intro video)

LOL, I remember Fear Effect and Retro Helix on the PSOne. Lousy games both of them, sold on the implication of lesbianism and nothing else. I remember the first game was pointlessly easy because you could perform what my friends and I called the "invincibility roll" which seemed completely impenetrable.

Lmao first off theres wasnt any what you call "Lebianism" until the second and without it the first game sold tons of copies, it was fun and alot more mature then most games out there. And the storyline was great for its time, as was the voice acting and music. Both games received tons of positive praise from tons of reviewers just for the fact fear effect was a risky game.

Sounds like we played a completely different series lmao, but I respect your opinion.

I don't see what was risky about them really. The first was laughably easy (as I explained), and the plot wasn't exactly what I'd call mature. Okay, it wasn't Mario looking for stars, but any credibility that the first had plot wise (because it had no credibility in its gameplay) was lost when the sequel pandered to such a base demographic of pocket-twitching teenage boys.

The only thing risky about the first game was filling 4 CDs with essentially nothing but FMV.

I tested Fear Effect 2, which was a cool game.

The lift scene with Hannah and Rain made an impact on me :D

I think it did every young boy:vlol:
Here's hoping eidos do continue the series since they still hold the rights to it.=D

LOL, I'm joking (in that post you quoted anyway). Don't take it so seriously. I'd be completely indifferent if Eidos were to announce a new sequel to Fear Effect ;)

Fear Effect is an awesome series :D

The art style is what really appeals to me. Those graphics are just amazing and they dont look half bad even today along current-generation games.

God, if I ever find an old copy anywhere I'll play the hell out of it!

Hm...I'll have a poke about and see what I can find :) I sometimes come across PS1 games that are ridiculously expensive lol.

I think Fear Effect 2 is my preferred game in the series, mostly cos I remember liking Rain a lot and she's not in the first one. And Jin! Jin always gave me a laugh :p

What I liked about Fear Effect was that the gameplay in itself wasn't incredibly original but it worked especially in terms of puzzles which I enjoy even more than what the original TRs offer. The best thing about Fear Effect was its cyberpunk world brought to life with incredible looking visuals that still hold up well today all held up with a plot full of intrigue and with a hint of surreality all the way through. Its good to hear from Keir even if it is 'nothing to report' right now. At least Eidos are saying 'never'.

Wow Fear Effect, a a blast from the past. I actually own both 1 & 2 for Playstation. Amazing looking games for the time!:cln: I know there have been rumours for ages about a third game in the series, would be interesting. I always hope for a new Legacy of Kain game as well.:D

A blast from the past, I forgot about these little gems in my PS1 collection.:D

O_O you gotta be joking the graphics were amazing for this game back then lol, definetly one of the better looking games on the PS1.

FE and DH were comprised of flat-shaded polygons on looped, pre-rendered FMV backdrops. Flat-shaded polys aren't exactly what I'd call ground-breaking, even back then. And there's certainly nothing clever, ambitious or advanced about using reams of FMV. That's why the games both took up 4 CDs each, they were chock full of nothing but FMVs.

That is what I meant by being too ambitious, it compromised the flow of gameplay. It's just silly to suggest that visually the game didn't look good, because it did compared to many other games at the time. I said nothing about it breaking new ground did I now, I said it had eye candy.:wve:

The very fact the visuals were 98% FMV renders any comparison to other games of the time pointless. FMV is what you make it, there's no limits beyond resolution and storage, it stands to reason that it'd be eye candy. But I think it's misplaced to heap praise on that :)

At the time the manga-esque cartoon visuals were impressive regardless of technique or how successful the gameplay was. Giving as many 3D games of the time were quite blocky. Of course pre-rendered backgrounds look better visually, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy etc.. but are more restrictive. Fear Effect did play almost play like a long interactive cutscene but visually it was vibrant, atmospheric & impressive but restrictive because of the way the visuals were achieved.

The strength in Fear Effect was always the fact it felt more like a movie anyway and a movie-like game back then was a huge novelty with which only the PS1 could have achieved at that time.
