View Full Version : Wildlife of Japan. Enemy Speculation

We all know Lara will be battling many supernatural creatures (assuming the leaked info is real) but I presume that these will not be the only enemies.
So i took a quick glimpse on the net to see what wildlife Japan has to offer;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wildlife_of_Japan
We can very likely look forward to;
-Bears; two kinds. the Brown Bear and the Asiatic Black Bear, the latter being known for being very aggressive towards humans. It can also climb trees so no easy escape for Lara! They don't share the same habitat so it's very unlikely we'll see both.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_Black_Bear
Next up is the boar; not scary but they can kill humans. Maybe good enemies for an early stage?
The Japanese macaque or snow monkeys, look similar to baboons (IMO) and live in mountainous areas. They might just wander around in harmlessly like in the TR3 Jungle level and steal artifacts or other important items:).
There are also wild foxes, racoon-dogs and leopard-cats, though they're pretty small and wouldn't be very threatening enemies.
Next up we have a variety of eagles and falcons, nothing we haven't fought before really.
There's also poisonous snakes, called habu and although there are no native poisonous spiders, the Redback spider had made it's way over to Japan and is causing some panic as they're spreading. Japan has many large insects though they're not poisonous they look scary. Let's not forget the giant centipedes or the giant hornets!.:p
Also, we have venomous sea snakes and the goblin shark which is very rare and mostly found in deep water but has been spotted in more shallow water nearer the coast so it could make an appearance.
And to top it off, just for atmosphere, firefly spotting is quite popular in Japan so i hope to see some flying around, just cos it'll look cool.:)
Well that's it really, i'm wondering what would you guys like to see? Whether it be real or imaginary?

Dear God, this is true. I don't have a problem with insects normally, but when I lived in Japan they freaked me out no end, 'cause they're massive compared to the ones we get in the UK. I swear a saw a moth the size of a small bird once, but I could have been mistaken. The hornets, though, are nasty - the size of my thumb.
The spiders too, were huge. Not bulky, like tarantulas, just the span of their legs!
Definitely go with the wild boar. There were signs up everywhere encouraging us not to go near them (or pit vipers, appparently) if we saw them because people kept getting gored...

Yeah, i read about those moths! Creepy things, even when they're small. I saw a documentary about the Japanese hornets! OMFG!! they're huge and terrifying!

One sting from those can kill ya!

wild boars and asian black bears could be the common enemy throughtout the game.
I would also love those bees as nonkillable enemies or enemies that can be spelled by smoke or fire. Also when having fire it will attract those huge moths or bugs.
Maybe even some extinct enemies like dodo birds which are huge and fast.
I would like animals that dont attack you too like moose or dear or birds that you can kill but none of them attack you.
As for immaginary enemies I would like giant water serphants, giant underground spiders that have long legs. Similar to the japanese looking ones but bigger and faster. Snakes, and a varity of mutant animals living underground like furless smaller bears that run on all fours and can bounce on you, bee-like bugs with giant stingers, giant centepedes that attack in groups...

I like those ideas. Monkeys could be scary if made properly. I just hope that the enemy AI is great. In Underworld it was so dissapointing.

Id like to see some animals that were not native, like some tiger, or something. not from japan, maybe showing that this island was visited by other colonies, and who ever visited the island did not escape :D
I like the sound of the bear, boar, and perhaps a hunting bird like a hawk, to harass Lara in high places. The animals in Tomb Raider have never behaved normally towards intruders so I would not mind seeing the Iriomote cat, its said to be a living fossil since it has not changed much from primitive times and is endangered so just the type of creature for young Lara to start her adventures with, perhaps they could grow slightly larger on this island for some reason. Mind you even the common old house cat if they turn feral can be a dangerous creature, perhaps not lethal but still painful. A few inquisitive Japanese Macaquess would be nice, with the thieving tendencies of the monkeys in TR3.
I had wondered if we would get perhaps a few other living fossils in the game, a few dinosaurs perhaps, or maybe something that looks like a small dragon. I suppose a few giant salamander would do but I would really like to see something more mythical and land based.
Some swans and geese would be nice as extra wildlife especially if there is going to be a pond or lake on the island, usual fish and a few deer.
Let's not forget about pokémons! :3

Yeah, I guess they could make the Iriomote cat larger, I mean Lara has been attacked by crows in London so I think anything is possible!!
Dinosaurs are always cool even though it's been done it'd be welcome again. Perhaps no t-rex, it's a bit obvious and we've fought a total of 5 of them between TR1-3 & TRA. Maybe an Allosaurus or similar large dino but raptors and compys are a must.:D
Dragons would be cool, giant lizards and spiders are also very welcome.
I'd love to see puzzles involving the hornets and a bigger foe which lara may not have the firepower to kill, so lure it towards a hornet nest, take aim and drop the nest on the big bad beastie!
Some non combatant animals would be cool too, some deer, antelope and geese for example.

It would be great to have those in the game! :tmb:
OMG,remember in anniversary when wolves grabbed your legs and arms???
well what if monkeys jumped onto your backs and covered your face and you had to shake them off?:)
that would be coooool!:D

Edit 2: TIGER! (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3023/2686251502_e7a9c7ca42.jpg?v=0) Apparently it cost $6 million. :o, and thats only half of it.
If you ever come to Glasgow, go to Kelvingrove Museum! They have giraffes and well everything! And some really expensive paintings and best of all, its completely free! :D
