I just started playing TR1 again after a good decade and I forgot how horrible the controls are compaired to the modern WASD controls. What were they thinking?

I love the game though. Its great to be playing it again. The depth of it totally blows away anything CD has put out. If only they could take 4 or 5 years to put together a game with as much length and depth as TR1 but with modern graphics... what a game that could be... oh but not with TR1's controls. :hea:

I love TR1's Keyboard controls!
I thought that they had done great work in working out which keys to use :)

Same here. I've always used these controls in all games and I'm so used to them, and especially after playing with Playstation (which is pretty new to me and Im FINALLY getting a hang of it) it feels so smooooth and easy...

I think that the controls used in the CORE games are much easier to use than the CD incarnations. Legend, Anniversary and Underworld are pretty much made for consoles, but earlier Tomb Raiders are much easier to control on the PC, IMO. :)

Can't you redefine your key assignations?

You can put the movement on WASD.

I have found the controls for the earlier games easier to remember and use.

Ugh I hate the way the console controls make my hands hurt. I wonder if TR was a contributing factor to my carpal tunnel.

I don't remember the keyboard controls too much. I know I played the game the first time on the keyboard. I want to again but I seem to have misplaced the game for PC. All I have is for playstation. :(

Me too... Although there's several trick to change the controls... I actually complain to new games cause they complicated everything. Although i play them with a gamepad.

The PC controls I use are the entire number keypad. Just makes it a lot easier. Before though on the PS1 version before they came out with analog control (TR3) using the D-pad hurt my hands after a while:mad::D;)

I just moved sprint and duck (and more recently roll) to left hand, since they were awkward to reach with right hand. I use the same basic controls for TR1 - TR6 (AOD).

z - sprint
x - duck
c - roll (sometimes out of habit I still use end key)

Left hand middle 3 fingers are on shift, z, x. I don't use any keys above this row on the left hand.

It really bugs me seeing comments like these, not because I can't stand them or anything but because I've never been bothered by controls in any game so I really can't imagine what it's like for you.

when I first replayed TR1 (last month) I had a bit of trouble getting used to the controls, but once I finished city of vilcabamba it became like eating a cake (a tasty and creamy one that is) ;)

How its possible to have duck and sprint in TR1?

How its possible to have duck and sprint in TR1?It isn't. I mentioned TR1-TR6. The only common would be using C for roll (in addition to end). For TR1-TR6 I use right hand for movement and look only.

For the CD games, I use a mouse, with right button for roll, and middle button for grapple. Left hand is the standard WASD, plus the adjacent keys for the other functions.

Does CD games have a roll button .

If you start running and press the crouch key she'll roll forwards, not a 180º turn like in core's games. ;)

jeffareid

Does CD games have a roll button.Yes, but it's a forward roll, not a roll and turn. The main issue is that it's used for the adrenaline dodge moves, so it's nice to move it away from the left hand WASD movement control. For the CD games, duck, roll, dodge are the same key.

Ive recently been playing this fantastic game again, and ive managed to get it set up so that i use my PS2 gamepad on my pc :)

The keys are all mapped to the pad via great little program called JoytoKey. It really works like magic, though to me the controlls wasnt that bad to begin with.

I just prefer to use my PS2 gamepad on the pc when raiding :tmb:
