View Full Version : 0% damage playthrough
Hey,
I've recently started playing through the original Tomb Raider on the Playstation. However, I wanted to add more of a challenge, so I decided to try and go through it without losing any health! This includes finding all the secrets, pickups and racking up all the kills. Obviously if there are any parts where the game 'forces' you to take damage then I can't help that, but otherwise I want it to be a clean run.
Basically I just wanted to throw this out there and see what people thought. I'm far from an expert so this might be an old challenge for all I know. If people are at all interested though, I'd like to hear feedback, and I might update my progress if anyone cares!
So far I've done the first four levels taking 0% damage (and fairly comfortably). The only pain in the ass was the fight with Larson, as he usually takes cheap shots at you as you exit that damn pool!

GOSH.... I couldn't do it.
Imagine getting to the last level without losing health and natla hits you.........  LOL
OMG, that's so awesome :D! The first four levels are quite nice to this kind of challenge, but i haven't done it myself (i never shot the bats on time)... Anyways, keep it up :tmb:!

That's outstanding Dean K! I hope you can make it through. I'm also replaying TR3 with some added chanlenges but 0% demage is too much for me. Good luck.
Oh, and why don't you write something about the game as you play along, something like a diary, saying which parts were the hardest/easiest to pass with those rules and so on?
Not a new type of challenge, but definitely the most difficult IMO.
I'm trying to do TR1 without killing enemies...
Thanks for the encouragement so far!
I've just cleared St. Francis' Folly and Colosseum without TOO much trouble. I was worried about fighting Pierre, but the level design gives you a lot of cover / room to keep out of his target range.
I was actually thinking of recording a play through of this and posting episodes on YouTube as a sort of video walkthrough, but I haven't decided yet. Plus, I actually need to see if I can do it first lol.
With regards to other challenges.. I did a pistols only and a no medi-pack run years ago, but this one seems a lot more interesting and satisfying. I like to use all the different guns, and taking no damage just makes Lara feel like this ultra infallible Tomb Raider, which is pretty cool!
What does the 0 enemy kills one play like?

Great reading! :tmb:
0 enemies means you only kill the ones you actually need to end the game, such as ones that drop keys or end bosses ;)

I replayed the game recently and i can't remember any parts that force you to take damage...
The mutants in the later levels could be really troublesome though (for a challenge like this),especially those hiding inside narrow tunnels.
Good luck!:tmb:

Oh yeah yeah, I understand what it means. I meant what is it like to play through?
Is it annoying having to work around Pierre shooting at you? Do you end up using a ton of medi packs; stuff like that?

What does the 0 enemy kills one play like?Well, i've just finished tomb of Qualopec. Caves was easy enough, but you have to keep your distance from bats. City of Vilcabamba, i locked some of the wolves in one of the secret rooms for easier navigation. The second set was more difficult. I had to wait under water to get the wolves to allow me to get to the edges over the water without being pushed in the water. I notices that they don't walk on breakable tiles or trapdoors. The axe room was interesting enough, trying to navigate the traps while being pushed by wolves The lost valley was interesting enough, everything feels more intense with enemies chasing you everywhere.
Real difference from mowing down enemies with uzis. Different strategies are needed
Edit: I'm trying not to use medipacks, so jumping is a must, and locking the wolves in a room was a preventative measure. CORE placed some nice ledges in the game and some secrets make for good areas to wait for enemies to disperse

I have no idea I've never done it. The only thing I've ever done is right now, tr3 pistols only/no medipacks/all secrets

I'm enjoying it so much I'll be doing many other different challenges with the core series once I'm done with that one. I can't play TR1 anymore though.:(
Here's a vid if you want to watch it. I haven't recorded the other three levels yet as i just ran through them not caring of medipacks since they were just to get the strategy down.

About playing for 0 kills, I haven't done TR this way, but the later games you can do a lot. The best aid is never seeing an enemy, which I do by using Fexinspect to find their trigger squares, and bypassing those squares, often by use of bugs. You can figure out the trigger squares without Fexinspect, but it's harder.
Especially if you don't go for secrets, it's possible to skip large sections of levels, particularly if you allow bugs.
Of course, there are a few enemies you MUST kill to progress (giant legless mutant, bacon Lara) - until someone finds a way to bug by them. On the other hand, you can end the game without killing Natla.
Otherwise, yes, you dodge and use medipacks.

although there are four things you Must kill (Pierre, mutant Lara, torso beast and the scion) mutant lara doesnt count as a kill (she still shoots when shes "dead" too) so you COULD kill Natla once to get her grounded and say that you only got the 4 necessary kills:D.
You can do a web search for
tomb raider "no scratch"
which was the old term for 0% damage. You'll find quite a few hits.
Just got through Palace Midas in one piece. Pretty simple stuff, none of the enemies pose too much of a threat at this point. I only need to resort to shotgun when the lions attack at close quarters. Am not looking forward to all those Pierre fights in the narrow Cistern areas though. Will keep you posted.
With regards to the 0 kills run, I can certainly see how strategy would need to be implemented there, plus I can imagine it being quite tense when a mass of creatures are chasing right behind you! I think working around Pierre will get really irritating though!
I don't have enough patience for this, and I think it's extremly hard, it doesn't count that you are a professional gamer or not. :D
But anyway, congratulations! :D

I always thought no scratch, actually meant no scratching yourself! :vlol: :vlol: I usually get my arms itching when having to climb long walls or shimmy long ledges, times at which I usually have both hands on the keyboard. :vlol:
There is one secret in St Francis where there is a pressure pad towards the top of the folly which triggers a timed door at the bottom. How did you do that one without taking any damage?

You're right, of course it doesn't relate to being a professional gamer, but that isn't why I'm doing it. It's just to add an extra challenge, some people thrive on that! lol

You have to exploit a glitch in order to get that secret without any damage. You simply trigger the pressure pad then make your way safely to the bottom of the folly and use the save crystal on the ground. If you reload your game from here the secret door will open right in front of you! I can only assume it resets the pressure pad timer? Of course you can call this cheating, but there was literally no other way for me to avoid the damage (that I know of). Just for the record, the only other glitch I have used is the corner jump in Palace Midas in order to get all the pickups.
Well good luck trying not to take damage when dropping down into the scion room, after the mutant boss and the bridge section... On the last level ;)
I liked your video, was really cool... next time i have the chance to play TR1 i'll sure do your way :tmb:.
Nice going, Dean K. :tmb:

It is an old challenge, but none the easier for that. These types of challenges have been going on for a long time on this forum - search for the word "challenge" in any of the Classic sub-forums. The current one is the TR4 Challenge (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?t=150367), which I'm attempting no-scratch and pistols only. I haven't participated in a TR1 challenge, though from what I remember of the game, it shouldn't be too hard (compared to TR3 & TR4, that is ;)) - it has very few human enemies, no unkillable enemies, and few spots where you're forced to lose health.
and few spots where you're forced to lose health.
Can you remember which those spots are?
I'm just curious because i replayed the game quite recently and don't remember any of those...:o
Oh, I just meant in general - as opposed to, say, TR2, which has lots of major falls (in Wreck of the Maria Doria & The Deck, for example). It's been a long time since I played TR1 fully, so I don't remember most of the levels very well. There may not be any spots where you have to lose health - if so, so much the better for Dean K and anyone else attempting a challenge.
Well, St. Francis has major falls depending if you want to take shorcuts or not. I don't remember well though.

well since Pierre doesn't die when you shoot him then you are allowd to drive him off plus if you decide not too dirve him off he won't appear later(ecxept in ToT). but I havent done the chalenge myslf so I can bet its hard.

If you play it normally you can't lose any health at all.
I'm 100% sure for that level.:D

I beat the game without taking any medi-packs and also for TR2,3!
But 4 was impossible to never take, I took 2 medi-packs to beat it.
As for the new ones I always take medi-packs LOL!
I like to collect items like medi-packs and weapons and never use them. :) It's much fun.

Well Dean, you've set yourself a gargantuan challenge, the sheer thought of it is overwhelming, maybe a zero health pack use challenge but this is far beyond me and i'm probably one of the most patient of people, good luck to ya though and keep us posted on your progress like you've been doing. :D
