I was playing on the orginal TR today and i noticed something in the opening cutscene of Peru:
VILjqZKjzag
Why does Lara get out a knife and cut the rope to fall down? Why didn't she just let go?:p
it's not silly. Lara was tied to rope for her safety. Maybe they didn't show it in the scene but it's meant to be so :wve:

but they meant it. climbers wrap their waist with rope

Maybe she cuts the rope to give herself more movability on the decent, simply letting go would reduce this somehow.

but they meant it. climbers wrap their waist with ropeBut when she's climbing up and when shes pressing the button, you can see it's attached to her and it's just dangling down to the floor. So she could just let go of the rope:p
graphic limitations I think. They never would do such thing without a reason.

it does look cool too. And Core's fmw with Lara welding the elevator's suspender is cooler than TRA where she shoots it

i think its probabaly just graphic limitations
i never noticed.:ton:
Graphics limitations?! It's an FMV - it's not limited by the graphics of the game engine! If they wanted to make Lara let go of the rope instead of cutting it, they could easily have done so - and just as easily, they could have shown the rope tied around her waist as well. Maybe that's what they intended at first, but somehow forgot to do so? The way shown in the FMV now really doesn't make much sense unless you assume that there was some mistake somewhere.
I always thought she used a knife only to make the intro "cooler"... But still useless.

...Why does Lara get out a knife and cut the rope to fall down? Why didn't she just let go?:p
Exactly. I made the same point a couple of years ago. But I didn't notice it the first time I played.
I noticed this too lol. And if it were tied around her waist, the part that she cut off would still be attached to her waist when she landed... LOGIC FLAWED! :p
I want to know why she was tied up there. In St. Francis she is leaping over like a thousand foot drop but above the doors in the FMV, she's afraid of falling? Lara Lara Lara...You're blonde arn't you?

Despite what climbers may do in reality, that opening CGI clearly shows that the rope is not tied to Lara's waist, so Super Badnik's comments still stand.
Nice find Super Badnik, I've never noticed it myself. It's just a little continuity error I guess :D
Probably because cutting the rope just looks far cooler than letting go. :p

I don't see why 'graphic limitations' would even be considered. it clearly looks better her cutting the rope than just falling, in my opinion. I'm glad she cuts the rope and makes that cute little sound.

I never looked at it that carefully before. I always assumed that she wrapped her wrist with the rope and then through the hand (as anyone is taught when the need to utilize the other hand is required). Tying off to the waist is used when you will be there for awhile, or when you being pulled up by others.
But all in all, it is quite inconsequential, although kudos to Super Badnik for noticing. :)
Maybe she wanted to use the rope later and had she not cut it, she wouldn't have been able to get the grappling hook dislodged when she had finished with the wolves.

That's an excellent point. Too bad she didn't use it later on... ;)

Cuz its cool :ton:
Maybe it was done just so we'd all sit around and debate it. :D
Lara cut the rope so when she fell it wouldn't get in her way. Rope burn really hurts. Her dramatic entrance wouldn't be as dramatic if her scarf caught the rope, spun her around, landing on her bum, dinner for the wolves...
She cut the rope 'cause she's badass like that. :ohn:
They needed a reason why Lara could not use the grapple in the game perhaps?

Also noticed something, not silly, but an error i guess in this scene but in Anniversary. Instead of falling from a rope she jumps from the top of the door after she presses the button. But when i tried jumping from there myself before pushing the button, Lara died from the fall, yet she survives doing it in the cutscenes without even a hint pain.
