What would each button on the controller do?

Mine, based on the PS3 controller:

http://img.swapz.co.uk/swapz/2011-02/big/4d5f83c126e02_1.jpg

Movement controls:

(X) Jump
(Square) Interact/punch
(Triangle) Kick
(Circle) Roll/slide/crouch/crawl
(^) Use health item
(<) Cycle weapons left
(>) Cycle weapons right
(v) Switch on flare
(L1) Sprint/speed up climbing
(R1) Walk/stealth
(L2) Aim weapon
(R2) Shoot
(L3) Display HUD
(R3) Reset camera
(Left analogue stick) Move Lara
(Right analogue stick) Rotate camera
(Start) Pause menu
(Select) Inventory

Swimming controls:
Classic swimming controls

(Left analogue stick) Steer left, right, up and down
(L2) Aim underwater weapon
(R2) Shoot
(Square) Action
(Circle) 180 roll

Vehicle controls:

(Square) Get on or off
(R2) Accelerate
(L2) Reverse
(Triangle) Shoot currently equipped handgun

Camera Movement:
As for the camera, when you point it upwards I'd like for it to eventually start to raise above Lara's head instead of having the camera at her feet, so you'll be able to look directly above Lara without her herself being in the way, whilst still able to rotate it.

I changed the keyboard configuration on my pc for the last 3 games and they turned out pretty comfortable. Well, maybe not in Underworld, because I normally used the right mouse button to jump, and in that game that wasn't an option..

http://i32.************/28aql9l.jpg

Legend and Anniversary

arrow keys - movement
end - crouch
delete - grapple
home - medipack
insert - grenade
page up, page down - scroll in the weapons invertory
mouse left button - shoot
mouse right button - jump
right control - target lock
right shift - interact
l - light
tab - PDA
z - manual aim
p - pause

Underworld

arrow keys - movement
end - crouch
delete - grapple
home - medipack
insert - grenade
page up, page down - scroll in the weapons invertory
mouse left button - shoot
mouse right button - target lock
num 0 - jump
right control - interact
l - light
tab - PDA
z - manual aim
p - pause

I don't really remember what it was for walk and sprint and such, because they're not so essential to me, but I probably used num 1 or insert or enter, or something that I can still reach with my left hand.

This is what i'd like the controls to be like, now there might be new features that we don't know about but anyways;

Action/Grab/melee attack [X]
Jump [Square]
Draw weapons [Triangle]
Roll/Crouch [Circle]

After that I'm less fussy about controls;
Optional manual aim [R1] (an over-the-shoulder view)
Shoot [R2]
Light flare/flashlight [L1]
Sprint [L2]
Inventory [Select]
Take cover [L3]

Whatever happened to that roll she used to do that turned her around in the old games ??? I liked that one. It should be the TRU controls and the O should make you do the classic roll.

^ theres really no need for the 180 Roll; it was in the classics, so that lara could turn around faster; now all we do is press down on the left joystick, and she immeadiatley faces the opposite dirction.

but i would like to see it in TRO, as long as it doesnt replace the forward roll.

I think console players should be able to change controls like pc players can.

A PC gamer can map any button to a specific move, on the consoles we just pick from a list of preordained control schemes, i'd like full customization please!

Just a bit of tweaking to the PS3 control scheme:

[L2]: Sprint [R2]: Graple/hook/magnetic graple
[L1]: Draw guns/aim (depending if it is on manual or auto aim mode) [R1]: Shoot

Up arrow: medipack
Left arrow: pls/flashlight/flare (depending which one you have at that moment)
Right arrow: reload
Down arrow: change weapon

Left analog stick: Move
L3: Reset camera
Right analog stick: Move camera
R3: over the shoulder aim

Triangle: Action, legs: kicks
Square: Action, hands: punches, grab (can be either toggled as automatic hold or manual hold ala AoD), pulling/pushing etc.
Circle: Duck/crawl/roll
X: Jump

Select: PDA (inventory)/map (the latter most likely considering the era of the game)
Start: In game menu (if with pda)/Inventory with all the options (if with map)

Way more options and you can easily still hold on to a ledge, aim and shoot without any trouble even with the grab button being there. There should also be a lot more combination moves such as sprint jump, sprint roll (that either ends up on a duck or continues as running/sprinting.

Oh, please do include the control overlay the next time you release a game. I don't like to look up the manual each time I start a new game because the controls are usually displayed in the game. Made it frustrating to learn them that way :o

I have PS3 too, so mine will be based off that as well:

(X) Action (manual grab, pick up/use object)
(Square) Jump (hold for longer jump)
(Triangle) Draw Weapons (just holds in hands, not above head/shoulders or holds out in front of herself aiming at nothing looking like a retard. Does not go into strafe mode. Just plain and simple.. hold in her hands like she doesn't even have them, but when enemy comes she will auto aim at them, like the classics.)
(O) Grapple/Rope
(^) Health pack
(<) Cycle weapons left
(>) Cycle weapons right
(v) Draw Flare/torch
(L2) Sprint (push in trigger harder for faster sprint, softer for brisk jog).
(R2) Crawl, roll, slide on back if sprinting. Hold and press Melee to do kicks from below.
(L1) AOD style walk (toggle on or off by pressing or hold to keep walking and to sidestep)
(R1) Shoot when weapons are drawn, Melee when not (Punching/standard kicks).
(L3) Bring up Compass
(R3) Centre camera

L2 - Manual aim
R1 - Throw Grenade/Flare
R2 - Shoot (aiming like in classic TR's)

RAS - Roll (Like GoW/heavenly sword)
R3 - Crawl

Directional buttons control camera. (would work as long as the camera isn't glitchy)
Select - PDA/Journal
Start - Menu

Run = Up Arrow or D-Pad Up, Press forward with left or right to move in that direction.

Hop Back = Down Arrow or D-Pad Down

Turn Right = Right Arrow or D-Pad Right, Hold to pivot on the spot.

Turn Left = Left Arrow or D-Pad Left, Hold to pivot on the spot.

Walk =R1, Used in combination with the direction keys for slower movement. Lara will never walk off an edge, though she will run off. It's also handy for areas with spikes, broken glass, barbed wire, etc. Lara won't take damage if she WALKS through these.

Jump = Square, Makes Lara jump straight up. More complex jumps are covered under combo moves, below.

Sidestep Left/Right = L2/R2

Roll/Reverse = Circle, Lara drops to the ground and comes up facing the opposite direction.

Draw/Holster Weapon =Triangle

Action = X, Actions include firing weapons, picking up objects on the ground, using switches, keys, puzzle items, etc. (Also used to make Lara grab in certain combo moves, below.)

Look = L1 + D-Pad, Look (labeled "Ins" on some keyboards) shifts perspective to what Lara sees. Hold Look while pressing directional (arrow) keys to look in different directions.

I've tweaked mine, slightly. Would anyone else care to give us their ideal control config? :)

Ward Dragon
15-02-10, 03:05
I haven't changed my mind too much since I posted this in another thread a few years ago:

I'll have PC controls and PlayStation controls (Xbox would be the exact same just with different labels for the buttons, and I don't happen to have an Xbox controller in front of me right now so I can't remember which button is which)

Also, I would make all of these the default controls but with the option for the player to remap it on all platforms. Manual grab and interactive shooting (once for every bullet) would be optional. Swimming controls would be like the classics, except the speed-up feature would be included. Movement and Camera will be character oriented with follow camera by default.

PC

W,S = move forward and backwards.

A,D = strafe left and right.

Mouse left and right = turn Lara and the camera left and right.

C = toggle free-rotating camera which would be moved by the mouse (makes movement controls WASD camera-oriented, each corresponding to a cardinal direction)

Z = toggle manual aiming mode for the guns (controlled by the mouse)

Left Ctrl = walk (which prevents Lara from going over edges)

Space Bar = jump (hold down for longer, higher jump)

Left Shift = Crouch/Roll (jumping from a crouched position lets Lara jump higher)

Left Mouse Button = Action (interacts with items, shoots if guns are drawn, and serves as manual grab if the player selected it and has guns holstered)

Right Mouse Button = Sprint (pressing it while running results in TR3-style sprint. Pressing it during other activities results in speeding up like Legend/TRA)

Q = grapple

F = draw/holster weapons

E = Reverse Roll

X = Display HUD

Tab = inventory (if not combined into the menu)

Esc = Menu

Cycle Mouse Wheel = cycle through weapons

Click Mouse Wheel = grenade

R = flare/PLS

V,B = medipack shortcut keys

PlayStation

Left Analogue Stick = movement as follows: pressure sensitive, so pushing it lightly will walk and heavily will run. While walking or running, the stick will turn Lara left or right if moved to the side. While standing still, the stick will turn Lara if pushed lightly to the side, and Lara will strafe if the stick is pushed to the side heavily. Running (or jumping or swimming) forward and then suddenly and sharply pulling the stick all the way back will result in a reverse roll.

L3 (click Left Analogue Stick) = Toggle free-rotating camera (controlled by Right Analogue Stick) which makes movement camera-oriented (Left Stick moves Lara around on the screen in whichever direction it is pushed)

R3 (click Right Analogue Stick) = Toggle manual aim mode (controlled by Right Analogue Stick)

X = jump (hold down for longer, higher jump)

L1 = Crouch/Roll (jumping from a crouched position lets Lara jump higher)

R1 = Action (interacts with items, shoots if guns are drawn, and serves as manual grab if the player selected it and has guns holstered)

Circle = Sprint (pressing it while running results in TR3-style sprint. Pressing it during other activities results in speeding up like Legend/TRA)

Square = grapple

Triangle = draw/holster weapons

Select = Display HUD

Start = Menu (including inventory)

D-pad = cycle through weapons, use medipacks

R2 = grenade

L2 = flare/PLS

In addition to all of the acrobatics from Legend and TRA, I'd include monkey swinging, crawling (faster than the classics, though), and AOD style climbing (without a strength meter). Monkey swinging and climbing would be done by pressing the action key near the appropriate environmental areas (hold it if manual grab is on, otherwise press it again to let go). Crawling would be done by moving while crouching with guns holstered (with guns drawn, pressing crouch while moving will do a dodge. She can also shoot while crouching).

Anyhow, I probably forgot some things but I think they could be worked into my control scheme later once I remember :)

The one thing I would really love to see is using the right stick to aim jumps off of ledges. I'm getting sick of simply moving the stick away from the ledge and pressing jump. It limits what we can do. When Lara is hanging from a ledge the right stick can be used to aim a jump in any direction with a small reticle. That would give a lot more freedom of movement. It would also command skill during tense moments when ledges are falling. In the past few games there was zero tension during these moments because it was far too easy to jump to other ledges. As far as combat controls go, I think L1 can be used to draw weapons, the right stick can be used to aim, and L2 can be used to lock onto an enemy. This would provide a combination manual/automic aim that would please everyone. I think that considering how fast most of the enemies in TR games move a fully manual system would be hard to pull off. Fully automic aim is boring and I don't see how that would work without the typical jumping and holding the fire button. A combination system that uses both would work really well, however. As far as grappling is concerned, I don't think it should be as simple as in the previous games. I think we should have to aim the grapple manually like a gun.

Altair

I would do them mostly the same except:

General controls:

(X) Action
(Square) Jump
(Triangle) Draw weapons
(Circle) Roll
(^) Use Large Medipack
(<) Cycle weapons left
(>) Cycle weapons right
(v) Use small medipack
(L2) Draw weapons (keep hold)
(R2) Shoot (Legend style combat system)
(L1) Sprint
(R1) R1 will do 3 things:

AOD style of walk (toggle on or off by tapping R1. Or, hold R1 down to keep walking).
pan camera back
If you're within a certain radius of an enemy, walk will become stealth
Or, R1 will be aim if weapons are drawn, so a cross-hair will appear (still allowing you to walk)
(L3) Display HUD
(R3) Reset camera instantly behind Lara (PS2 AOD style)
(Left analogue stick) Move Lara
(Right analogue stick) Move camera (Camera properties: same as Anniversary)
(Start) Pause menu
(Select) Inventory

Swimming controls:
This would be exactly like Legend and Aniversary.

(Left analogue stick) Steer her left, right, forwards and backwards. NOT up or down.
(R2) Shoot underwater gun (eg harpoon/speargun)
(L2) Draw weapons (keep hold)
(Square) Action
(Circle) Swim down
(X) Swim up

Vehicle controls:

(Square) Get on or off
(R2) Accelerate
(L2) Reverse
(R1) Shoot pistol[/QUOTE]

Based on a PS3 Controller:

X- Jump
Circle- Roll
Square- Punch/Kick
Triangle- Interact
L1- Left Gun (Press once to draw, twice to shoot. If both guns are drawn, press Triangle to shoot both at the same time. Press L1 to put it away.)
L2- Grapple
R1- Right Gun (Press once to draw, twice to shoot. If both guns are drawn, press Triangle to shoot both at the same time. Press R1 to put it away.)
R2- Grab

Kind of confusing, but I've always wanted to have control over both guns seperately instead of both at the same time.

Ok so, BTW Ward Dragon, I meant kill me now if meele ever got the circular camera back from AOD:p

ok so here is the diagram which I will go in depth with:)
http://i663.photobucket.com/albums/uu356/larafan25/controllerfun.jpg

I'll start off with the buttons which are core and control the essentials of tomb raider....

X - This button is to jump, or climb up a ledge, you can jump vertically or horizontally.

square - this button is simply for throwing the grapple, I originally intended for it to be punch and triangle to be kick, however the grapple device comes before them IMO due to it's part in exploration annd traversal.

circle - This button is the all button, aside from triangle which is the main interaction methode, this button has tons of features... First of all, you can crouch, or you can perform a roll, You can drop items, when in stealth mode you can perform an army crawl or special crawl. whe you are against a wall or a block or anything you can take cover behind, you press this button to TOGGLE cover, this is the only time I will ever tolerate a toggle button...

triangle - This is the mother board, clearly to pul a switch you press this, to pick up ammo, guns, treasures, health, to carry a block, to pick up a machete, anything of that type is related to this button. Also put things down with this button.

R1 - This button originally used for a grenade has been changed for exploration and traversal because I believe this comes first in a tomb raider game, many will agree. So I have changed it to a stealth button, when you hold this button down (in the options menu the lazy people can put to toggle) lara will walk in stealth mode, when this button is held and circle is too you can perform the army crawl. If you sneak up to an enemy, you can perform a stealth kill using it and the kill will varry depending on the angle you attack at, I wouldn't recomend the front though:p.

R2 - so this button newly became the fire button in underworld, it's awesome and it is staying the same. You use it to shoot ANY ranged weapon, and also to thow any item that you can pick up like in underworld.

L1 - This button is the sprint button, hold down to run fast, when this is held down you can perform a long distance roll or a long distance jump.

L2 - This is the auto-aim button, yes auto-aim. When you are hiding behind cover you press this button and it targets your enemies, if you have manual aim set in the options menu then you can target them yourself, amazing fun eh!

The D-Pad, this used to be the control room for movement, now it is your hot keys, the up directional arrow uses a medi pack, the buttom used a grenade, or flare, or flashlight, these can also be selected from the inventory. The left button is to cycle weapons as well as the right one.

select - This is your inventory, select stuff and see stats and stuff, hopefully the menu screen is a backpack:)

start - pause

PS - PS menu...

this is my ideal controller configuration, I have tested it out by pretending to play and I think it works mighty fine, although some options adjustments are needed depending on auto or manual aim...aswell I just realized I forgot the grabe button :( shoot that is so important...I guess the sprint button could double as a grab button:)

That is the one I created, I'd love this so much:)

i hope that we can customize the controller to hawever we like.

i thought it was funny to play BloodRayne 2, and have something random like:

(A) Switch Weapon Mode
(^) Throw Spear-chain
(<) Shoot
(>) Jump
(LT) Kick
(RT) Auto Aim
etc.

That is the one I created, I'd love this so much:)

isnt that just the default controls?

^it is very close, the reason why is because IMO the controls given to us by CD are very user feiendly, very intuitive as well they are based on feeling natural, the game is about running around and jumping and exploring environments and we can see that exporation and traversal are primary in their controller configuration whereas any other type of control is secondary if need be.

I have edited the controls to fit in new features I'd like to see, for example this control scheme will work fine during exploration, stealth combat, run and gun combat, cover based combat, item usage, as well as hand to hand. however I tried to keep movements like jumping and grabbing and interact assigned to buttons which are easy to reach and can be held down and toggled and swicthed quickly and seemlessly.

Notes on the controls:

*1; When next to a rock, ledge, wall or anything Lara could climb or step onto pressing this button will make Lara vault onto said item, this independant action removes the irritation of Lara jumping into and not onto rocks and ledges. The same theory applied when Lara wants to safely climb down and hold onto a ledge.

*2; There has been no 'Centre camera button' used as this control scheme is based on one where the camera stays behind lara at all times (unless the First Person View initiated and left by pressing L3 is used, upon leaving this however the camera will return to behind Lara). In a sense Lara and the camera move as one, if the camera is panned to the left Lara will do so also, and henceforth.

*3; When holding R1 during combat stance, Lara will immediately lock onto the nearest/ most dangerous enemy, to cycle enemies on auto lock the player can use the [↑] and/ or [↓] buttons on the D-pad to cycle enemies in an clockwise/ anti-clockwise manner.

When R1 is held down Lara will automatically aim at an enemy but the R3 button analogue allows players to aim manually. Whilst clicking it will make Lara aim at the the nearest enemy again.

*4; Swimming controls remain the same as in TRL/ TRA and TRU.

I've updated, again. I've also added a bit about how I'd like the camera to behave. or the camera, when you point it upwards I'd like for it to look upwards and then start to raise above Lara's head instead of it being at her feet, so you'll be able to look directly above Lara without her being in the way, still able to rotate it.
With this, the camera would make a perfect look button. :)

The great thing about being a PC gamer is that you can map the keyboard and mouse controls to suit yourself and the game.

I find that I map for each specific game, my settings for TR games are very different to (for example) Assassins Creed 2 and JUST cause 2.

flexibillity is king!!!

I changed the keyboard configuration on my pc for the last 3 games and they turned out pretty comfortable. Well, maybe not in Underworld, because I normally used the right mouse button to jump, and in that game that wasn't an option..

Legend and Anniversary

arrow keys - movement
end - crouch
delete - grapple
home - medipack
insert - grenade
page up, page down - scroll in the weapons invertory
mouse left button - shoot
mouse right button - jump
right control - target lock
right shift - interact
l - light
tab - PDA
z - manual aim
p - pause

Underworld

arrow keys - movement
end - crouch
delete - grapple
home - medipack
insert - grenade
page up, page down - scroll in the weapons invertory
mouse left button - shoot
mouse right button - target lock
num 0 - jump
right control - interact
l - light
tab - PDA
z - manual aim
p - pause

I don't really remember what it was for walk and sprint and such, because they're not so essential to me, but I probably used num 1 or insert or enter, or something that I can still reach with my left hand.

how could you changed the WASD to Arrow keys???

the guy that changed the HALF LIFE buttons too... arrow keys with mouse is terrible... Half Life have perfect controls as standard!

PS3 controls

L1- hold to draw weapon.................R1- Grab/shoot(weapon drawn)
L2- sprint.....................................R2- crawl

directional- free assign weapons

triangle - pull
square - jump
x - grappel
circle - roll/ release grapple

The R1 grab button will work great for manual grab since its such easy access and it doesn't take fast thumb switching between jump and action like it used to be. Your finger will always hover R1 so it'll make manual grab much more comfortable and fluid.

I don't know what I would want for a complete control figuration, but I would like to see these:

Combat:

L1- Tap to draw weapons, tap again to put them back
Right stick- Manually aim weapons
L2- Hold to auto target
R1- Shoot
[]- Melee attack 1
/\- Melee attack 2
Direction buttons- Cycle weapons

Enemies will take longer to die if auto targeting is used and will die more quickly if manual aim is used. This would reward manual aiming and give players a choice between the two. Some enemies will be killed more easily with guns while others will be killed more easily with melee attacks.

Platforming:

X- Jump
Right Stick- Aim jumps off of ledges in any direction with a small reticle
