TR1 wasnt the first TR game I played but since it is the game that started it all, it had the biggest impact on people and probably sold the most games :). i want to know what made you want to play this. Why did you go to the store to buy it? Did you just happen to see it at Wal-Mart or were you just dying to get it after seeing the commercial? I really wish i had played it first, but the first TR game I played was TR2...and it was just a demo so i was pretty interested. It wasnt after playing a section of the first level at my cousins house, that i was crazy about Tomb Raider.

SO, whats your story?

I remember one day during my (mandatory) army service i saw in the camp's lounge tv some footage from Tomb Raider on Euronews. It blew me away...It was 1997 and years since i had stopped gaming (since the Amiga 500 days.)
I had never seen a game like this so i knew that i had to try it out when i returned from the army.

However after i finished my service it took me some time to buy a Playstation and when i finally did,TR2 was already out so i played that first.Needless to say i was awestruck.I will never forget the feeling playing that game for the first time.
I had already beaten TR2 a couple of times before i decided to go and buy the first game too.:DI was kinda disappointed at first but that is another story.:p

Interesting stories!

Uhmm let's see... long story here :p
When I was... I must have been four years old, my brother got a game called Tomb Raider III for the PlayStation. I was in love with it all the way when I was very young, when I was 7 it was all I would think about at school (which is probably why I didn't learn much :o). During that age, my brother was given Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation too. I didn't like this one nearly as much, but never-the-less, I really began to enjoy these.
So, as the years went by, I received Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary. After playing Anniversary and losing the two 'classic' games to the boy my brother had given the games to in Switzerland, I really wanted to play TR1 and see the difference, and it being a big impact and all. :)

Short version/end of long version
It was then that I searched all five 'classic' games on eBay, and found a super quality lot :cln: so I got my Dad to buy them for me at £35ish. This was only, like, a year ago!
Here endith the very long story :)

Well, me and my brother played the TR1 demo on the PS1 and we asked out mum if we could get the real game, but she didn't like the idea of us playing a woman in hot pants raiding a tomb. XD
The next year our aunt asked my brother to complete TR2, and from then on until Legend, my brother would play it with the family, and now it's me who does. (Shame I missed out on playing the Core games. :()

But after TR2 had finished I wanted to get TR1 to complete my collection. :)

I first played some of the demos on my computer and liked the Tomb Raider games from then on so decided to buy the games as I saw them. At the time I didn't have many games and wanted games to play so bought the Tomb Raider games and did not get very far in the games at the time. I have bought Tomb Raider 1- 5 for the PC as I wanted a complete set of Tomb Raider games to play. I also bought Tomb Raider 1-5 for PS1 and was totally addicted to the games.
I still have not finished all of the Tomb Raider games, I don't play the Tomb raider games as much these days, but am trying to get through them.

I heard a bit about TR1, but not much, before I bought it. Back then I had bought a lot of games, and it was just going to be yet another game, but I found it to be the best game I bought back in those days. Other games of that era were games like Doom, Descent, the lucas arts series, such as Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones, Sam and Max, The Dig, Star Wars games like Rebel Assault, other games like Wing Commander, 7th guest, alone in the dark series.

I just wanted to have all the collection for the TR since I love this game, and that's what it pushes me to buy the first TR game, the first time I played that game inside her house, the graphics was miserable, but after I explored everything inside it and into the adventure, I liked it and ignored the graphics.

I saw some guys playing it in a PC shop and was fascinated, unfortunately I did not own a PC at the time, or a playstation, by the time I got a PC TR1 was no where to be found, which is why I started with the TR2 demo and then TR2 when it came out. I did eventually track down a PC version of TR1.

I remeber we were visiting my uncles house, so his son was playing TR3 I was 8 at the time and I was completly blown away.. it was very good but when I tried it got so scary for me so I couldnt play it.. so couple of moths passed and one of my school friends told about TR4 and how it's all in egypt and stuff.. so I went the next day and bought it and I loved how easy the first level was.. it was a good intoduction for a begginer.. and little by little I bought the whol series but i wasnt really intersted in TR1 until the N gage version got released and I bought it and beat it :jmp:

Well, there was a big hype when it was released, it looked so amazing at the time! I never bought it until about 6 months after it was released, though I used to watch my cousin and her dad play it at their house and I got turns as well, it was so fun especially the Egypt levels when those mummies jumped out of nowhere we all about fell off our seats. :D Great game! :tmb:

My brother had recently bought a Sega Saturn (in 1997), and when I went to visit him, I saw him playing TR1. He was on the City of Vilcabamba. After that, me, him and my younger brother all worked together to complete the game.

When we got the first piece of the Scion, we thought we had completed the game only to find out about the other 2 pieces. :D The same thing then happened after getting the 3rd piece. We we're like "oh my god, this game is epic", when Lara chased Natla.

Also, since this was the first proper 3D game me and my younger brother had played, when we first tried City of Vilcabamba and the wolves ambushed us at the beginning of the level, we paused and ran out the room screaming. :P

Chap down the pub told me about it and convinced me to buy it. Then did I realise that playing video games had grown up, would probably get laughed at for recommending a new TR game now. :D

I'd already played most of the later games in the series by the time I got the original. I wanted to have the entire series in my collection, so I sort of worked my way down from the more recent games to the classics.

If you were asking about my first experience of a TR game, that would be an entirely different story. It was about seven years ago, when we got a copy of TR4 for my mum's iMac. I don't think this was a very good place to start, as it was quite tricky learning all the controls and trying to get across that rop in Angkor Wat (why can't Von Croy give you a bit more help with that section?). Then it was several years before I finally managed to get past that fire puzzle in The Tomb Of Seth, and probably several more years after that that I finally completed the game.

My parents bought me a PlayStation 1 for my birthday when I was about 6 (11 years ago), they got me Croc and South Park Rally with it, but I remember my dad rented Tomb Raider so he could play something for him. But because they got the PlayStation for me, he didn't buy it. He set it up for me and he played Tomb Raider first just to see how it was. I remember sitting there watching him and falling in love with the game :D. I never touched Croc or South Park Rally for months because I made my parents go and buy me Tomb Raider. My dad would always get annoyed when he would die in the game, so he would give the controller to me while he went and 'cooled off'. I might not have been great at it, but I loved it to death.

From then on, I have bought every game since and tried to cram as much Lara into me as possible (LOL...O_O). :D

I had been playing DoomII for a couple of years and was getting bored and looking for something new. My husband suggested TR as that was game of the year. So I picked it up and have been playing ever since.

Don't mean to rain on your parade but Legend is the game that has sold the most copies.

Anyway. I'm pretty much new to Tomb Raider. I had Underworld on PS2 :hea: and realised I had the first four stashed away somewhere. I put TR1 into the disk tray and was blown away. I immediatly sold my PS2 Underworld on eBay:jmp: (which amazingly went for around 5 pounds) and started to play TR1, and well, it kind of went from there.:cln:

Wrong. TRL has been the fastest selling game, but it's not the best selling game. That title goes to TR2 (8 million copies), followed by TR1 which has sold roughly twice as copies as TRL (7 million copies of TR1 sold to date just for the PSX).

What hits me is that TR1 was considered incredibly successful when games like Super Mario Bros (the original one, released for the NES in 1985) sold roughly 42 million copies :o

We didn't buy it. It was given to us with the bought PS one from my dad's co-worker. I had no idea such a game existed. My older brother was the one who actually tried the game out first. He just went to me and said "Yo come here! This game is kinda scary I can't play it alone!" (referring to the FMV before the Caves). So he replayed the intro fmv before the main menu and showed me the FMV he was flipped out about. After that, I was in the ZoNNNNNNNEEE. It was a scary game and it still is. And it's still awesome:jmp:

I saw it being played at my cousin's house for christmas so many years ago, they had just recieved the PS1 as a gift. I only played a part of the Caves level from TR1 as a 6 year old. However for months that level and that mysterious woman (Lara) remained in my mind until one day my sister bought it for me. I never got that far at first since I was partially afraid of the crocodiles and spikes.

However, I stopped by ToysRUs and saw TR 2 and 3 released and thats how it all began. I finished TR 2 first then went on to conquer the original. The adrenaline rush I received from my first playthrough of the great wall of China will never be the same again.

It was the first game I played, back in 1997. I gave it away though, because it scared me too much.

Many years later, I played through and completed TR2. That was when I fell in love with the series, and I wanted to get TR1 again to start from the beginning. Didn't end up getting it to work on my PC for 5 years. :p I guess that's what I get for giving it away in the first place. :p

I was a huge Indiana Jones fan and I hadn't play games for years. Then I saw Lara and the PS1 and after some hesitation I bought them. It was an incredible experience for me, not really being a gamer; it blew me away. My jaw dropped when I discovered Natla was from Atlantis.

I played TR2 & 3 first, and then bought TR1 much later, to see what the game was like (and to have played them all). Going from TR2 & 3 to TR1 was a big shock, as the controls were so slow to react, and you could see how much the game had improved.

Before I had my own Playstation I used to play TR at my friends house. Then when Christmas come along I got my own Playstation and TR2 to go with it. :D It wasn't until later that I bought the Greatest Hit version with the Fighting Force demo. Of course later down the road I sold it but found another copy that was an original for only $5 mint condition which I bought this past summer. This is one of those games that I still play since I had so much fun playing it back in my early teen years kind of adds nostalgia value to me when I play the newer titles and think about how I got into the series in the first place.

It was 1997 and I didn't even have a PlayStation yet. I got a new job and my friends at work were raving about TR1 and how good it was, and they were already talking about TR2 coming out soon.

I had a long weekend coming up so I bought a PlayStation and TR1 together on the same day! I spent three days in a row playing the game. By the end of day one I was completely in love with it.

I think TR2 came out while I was playing TR1, so I was able to play them back-to-back. :)

Does anyone else from the U.S. like me associate Tomb Raider with Thanksgiving? I remember playing TR2, TR3 and I think TR4 during Thanksgiving break every year because the games came out around that time.

(first at home, after a friend of a friend of mine borrowed me some pc games for me newly bought pc..which also was in 1996... and one of those was tr. but also at a supermarket near my school, where they had 2 psx and a n64 plugged in and ready for everyone to play. and inside one of those psx, there was the tr cd)

without completing it, though... i started to suffer from withdrawal syndroms, so i had to buy it

Once I used to go to a market were they sold video games. My family became close to the video-game store's owners. Every weekend I'd go to the market and look at the shop with my younger brother. They had a Playstation machine at the back, and since we were close with them we were allowed to test some games. I remember one day we bought a game for my younger brother, and behind the register was a game with an oddly posed lady on the cover. I remember being sad walking out of the market because I wanted to test the game that I saw, but my Mother wouldn't allow since we were exiting. So next weekend I went back to the store and the first thing I done was asked to play the game, Tomb Raider. I didn't know what it was, it thought it was like a dress up game  But I really liked the manor part of the game, so I bought it for the price of $22.95, according to my case, in the end. I think I got it cheap, because these days that'll be the price of of a "new" Greatest Hits copy. :D Mind you I got it well after the release :o. I'm very glad I got it, because it introduced me to Tomb Raider. Poor thing happened to the owner of the shop, he's in a wheelchair after an accident. Oh well, that's how I was introduced to TR.

Well, its summer of 97 (a few months before the release of TR 2)

And me, being the happy little 7 year old gamer was already into things such as Clock Tower and Resident Evil, but what I also got with my first Playstation was a Gaming demo disk, filled with games like one where you deep sea dive and find an old ship, and PaRappa the Rapper. Well, also on it was the FIRST level of Tomb Raider 2, starting you off in the caves after the helicopter drops you off.
Needless to say, at that time the the superb graphics and flare lighting, ambiet glow in the water, and Lara Croft herself with the two pistols, tight outfit, and long braided hair, instantly attracted me (and Im gay so not in that way)
Well, it ended right after the blades in the Great Wall dungeon and stopped letting you play right as the spiked walls closed in on you after the short slide downward.
I replayed that THOUSANDS of times I promise, and shortly went to get Tomb Raider 1 (seeing as how this demo was for an unreleased SEQUEL)

I loved it the game, and was already addicted to Tomb Raider, and for Christmas of 97 guess what I wanted most of all, over ANYTHING else.

You guessed it, and "Santa Claus" brought me my copy of Tomb Raider 2 and I have waited and bought each sequel afterwards, up until Underworld, and I love the ENTIRE saga, from Core to Crystal Dynamics.

It came with my PS1, but I was to scared to finish it. I still haven't to this day, my PS1 is broken now. :(

But my love was invigorated after the movies were released, I got Chronicles, but once again, I didn't finish it. I also had TR2 I believe, or was that TR3? I don't remember now.

My first TR game was TR3:D It came with my neice's first PC and I had a go. My neice got bored with it so I ended up with TR3, this made me want to collect all the other TR games. My TR1 came in the boxed set of the first six games; I'd already played TRA before TR1 which obviously must have affected my impression of it but it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the game:tmb:, although it made me realise just how short TRA is in comparison.

I didn't buy it. My brother owned Tomb Raiders 1, 3, and 4. I always liked to watch him play TR3. It looked so cool. I tried it out myself, but failed terribly. Many years later, I saw a trailer for Tomb Raider Anniversary on tv. It inspired me to try the games once more, so I played most of TR3, which was great, then went on to play TR1, which was awesome.
